To counter all the 'KSM 141 is expensive' comments-- the excerpt is from the DVD. The book offers alternatives such as more moderately priced microphones. Even still, in the DVD Dennis Moody said that he used a Rode NT4 stereo mic or two Marshall microphones for his room mics with great results before he got the more expensive mic that is featured. Anyways, the DVD alone makes the book worth it in my opinion, regardless of the cost of the microphones.
WTF......... Inexpensive, hell. Not a great advert if you want usa to buy the book as the Shure KSM 141 is £455!! It's not what I would define as inexpensive.
I have a few problems with his hi-hat mic placement. It dosent sound right to have the hi-hat mic point at the snare and other side of the kit. It has a lot of bleed and phase issues. I usually use an SM57 pointed directly down about 4" away from the hi-hat. and to reduce bleed further, I spent $0.21 on a styraphome(not spelled right)cup and cut a hole in the bottm of it and put the mic inside of it. I'm not a professional recorder, but i think that sounds better than anything else I've tried.
It's a good thing this video has handy tips like "don't place your mics in areas where you might hit them with your sticks." Now that I know, I'll stop doing that :)
-Seriously though, this video does have some good info...
I bought this for 30 bucks. Its REALLY descriptive, long, and boring, but if you're like me, then that's just what you're looking for. It's well worth it.

@robo2613 That's not that expensive. The Neumann U87, pretty much the industry standard for lead vocals, is over €2000.
