Went home last year after nearly 10 years of being away. Manila has deteriorated more in the 10 years since I left. Visited the good,old neighborhood where I grew up and was appalled that even side streets and govt roads are now occupied by squatter shanties. Its really, really depressing. Old neighbors asked me why I chose to have only 1 child -I told them one reason is the steep daycare feeshere abroad-- they cdnt believe that, for even the poorest of the poor have at least 3 kids to raise.
The only solution is for the Philippine government to set aside their religious principles, study and apply the success story of other countries investments in voluntary family planning and reproductive health programs.
You have to try harder when you see around you and you question or you look in disgust and shame. You should look perhaps and see Jesus in each person that you can.
President Obama's change is expected for teh Philippines too.

Government because of corruption and lack of political will to help and manage its people. Church because of a belief that we should keep on having a child. They don't want contraception to be use. @1972asian A good way to help these poor people is to give them vegetable or fruit seeds that they can raise even in hanging flower pots. That way they can at least have something more nutritious to eat come harvest time.
