I'll have to disagree with you on that. I will say that SketchUp is pretty limited. Organic shapes are really hard and it can't render images.
However, SketchUp is very easy to use and people have made some incredible things with it. The model I'm most proud of is a Lego F1 Formula 1 car (go to the 3D Warehouse and look for "lego f1"). Check it out and tell me if you still think it's a crappy program.
@chiglinator It's actually pretty easy. For each new ring, you have to place a hinge in a group with the ring that went before. The hinge has to be placed to movie things in the opposite direction of the ring itself. This actually allows you to make an infinite amount of rings.
You can download the model in this video from the 3D Warehouse and see how all the joints are connected and grouped, it might help you. Please let me know if you need any more help!
@chiglinator Exactly. You start with the first ring which is connected to a hinge. In the same group as the first ring, you place another hinge which you'll connect to the second ring. In the group of the second ring you'll place another hinge which you'll connect to the third ring, etc. Of course all the hinges have to be in the same position within the 3D world (on the X-, Y- and Z-axis) so the center of every moving ring is the same.
This comment contains an audio track that has not been authorized by WMG. The audio has been disabled, but it is similar to what you would have heard if you spun up a WMG CD to 100,000 RPM and tried to use it as a gyroscope, in a reinforced test chamber, or course. ;)
i have downloaded sketchyphisics but im lost on how to get it to work i cant find the plugin (or the menu where it shold be). can someone message me with the step by step? ive seen others that have had the same issue, thanks a great deal...
I can help you. Download the zip-file to your desktop. Unzip it here. Open the folder, select everything and copy it. Go to C/Program Files/Google Sketchup/Plugins
cool i got it into and working, sorta. when i play it no matter what the hinge is it just falls. still missing something here. do u have any more tutorials planned?
That's because you have to connect the joint to the object. If I'm correct, there's a toolbar with all the joints in them. There's a hinge, a slider, a clockscrew, a spring, a ball and universal. Next to universal, is the joint connector (you can check by holding your mouse-arrow over it). That's the one you need to select. Click on the group you want to connect to a joint. Then press and hold Crtl and click on the joint. Now play the animation. Should work fine.
i cant get it figured out. trying to make a simple engine, the best i get is being able to drag the crank around the "floor". thats the best movement i could get. i got the connecting rods to spin around on the journal but couldnt get the crank to rotate... the videos on here look sooo simple, what the h*** am i missing. thanks for getiing me this far.
When I started with SketchyPhysics, I pretty much had the same experience as you did. You should download a model of an engine from the 3D Warehouse and check out how everything is grouped and connected. Just look for "sketchyphysics engine". That's the best way to learn it. If you can't see the joints, either you have to go to Window ==> Layers ==> click on "Physics Joints" or you'll have to turn on the hidden geometry.
It wasn't really my idea to make a gyroscope. Somebody else said he tried making a gyroscope with sketchyphysics, but couldn't pull it of. Well.. I could xD
Lol this is the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life. I downloaded Sketchup for the sole purpose of playing with this, and I sat there trying to figure out how to manipulate it without editing it...*sigh*
i can never do that in sketchy physics

huh, cool.. google sketch has physics. weird.
so this is probably why everyone fking uses it lol, apart from this, it's a completely crappy program lol

mastermiky2299 3 years ago 2
@mastermiky2299 kind of device that shows position relative to gravity. Example in an aircraft, to know how much the aircraft rolls.

There's a new version of SektchyPhysics coming up with controllable hinges. SketchyPhysics is getting seriously advanced

not exactly... A real Gyro has fixed hinges that dont slide around the other rings mysteriously.
