  • THAT WAS MASSIVE. HOLY ALSDKFALSKDFHJLAKSDFHJA

  • NO WAY!!! :DD

  • why all the arguing? if you prefer Drum Corps thats fine..if you prefer HBCU bands thats fine too but dont come on here telling someone is wrong simply because they dont have the same taste in music as you. I saw nothing wrong with FAMU's version of elsa..This isnt the middle east. We're allowed to have different opinions in America

  • i heard ISU play this as the warm up at a marching band show once. it was really good. the people playing this really really need to work on tuning...a lot.

  • I'll take a wind ensemble and even FAMU's version ovser Phantom Regiment. I will say that it was clean and a very good closer for their show. But the arrangement itself was somewhat stale. It lacked the amount of emotion that most concert ensembles and even FAMU would demonstrate

  • @Macnugget11 Are you retarded? You think that blasting to the point where it just sounds like total shit is emotion, no it just sounds awful. Brass instruments aren't supposed to sound like a swarm of bees, and to even compare this piece of shit to Phantom Regiment should be a crime. You need to get your ears checked.

  • @TheFlyhalf15 Pure Ignorance! 1.This is not even the same type of marching ensemble. To even begin to understand why bands like this play in this manner, you would have to know some history about traditional style and HBCU marching bands. It is apparent that you don't have this knowledge. Your one sided mentality from what you learned in your corp style training doesn't apply here. REAL musicians are more open-minded to variety, rather than knocking what they don't understand.

  • @Macnugget11 2. Wagner's "Elsa's Processional to the Cathedral" is loaded with phrases that pull back and fourth. This makes the build up section (Low voices repeating Db, C, Bb, Ab, G phrases) even more enjoyable. Then the point of no return, the absolute peak, and the final destination of the song is the loudest section. By the arrangement FAMU performed, I can tell that the arranger listened to the actual recording from Wagner's opera "Lohengrin". Phantom's arrangement was not as emotional.

  • @Macnugget11 You literally have no idea what you are talking about. Not only does the Phantom Regiment play this with more heart, pure emotion and power, but also with FAR superior blend, intonation and attention to dynamical phrasing. Just because the Regiment version is shorter means nothing. To say that FAMU's version is more emotional clearly shows that you have no sense of musical precision or excellence.

  • @samrshelley This has nothing to do with how long their arrangement is. I am speaking purely of the emotional context and phrasing of the original piece (from the opera) compared to the arrangements that FAMU and Phantom Regiment have played. You are right about the intonation and blend. Regiment wins ultimately in this category. Although, when compared to the original, FAMU's arrangement does beat them in the emotion department.

  • @samrshelley I have marched traditional and corps styles before and realized a few things. Music means more to musicians than it does to the listeners. As a listener, you should try to find the things that make music sound like enjoyable, rather than the laundry list of musical "Do's and Don'ts" that we are taught as musicians. As musicians, we should try to gain some understanding of music that are outside of our realm. This way we don't pass judgment on things we don't understand.

  • @Macnugget11 I have marched in a corps (Phantom Regiment) and a marching band (Kansas State). I can tell you, without bias, that the Phantom Regiment version in far more emotional. Unless, there were people crying hysterical off camera (I think not), you can simply not say the Regiment version was not as emotional. From the field on finals night, I saw at least 50-70 in tears. And I saw 30,000 people on their feet 1 minute before we even finished.

  • @samrshelley Of course you saw people in tears, the people of the corps style community have not witnessed such a clean version of this that song before. But HBCU fans have witnessed FAMU playing Elsa's for years, maybe even decades. As you can see, by the crowd of people standing in front of the band, it is still a loved piece of music. Even though Kansas State has an incredible marching band, I would not say that the overall style is the same as an HBCU marching band.

  • @Macnugget11 You are absolutely right about KSU. Very different from FAMU. KSU follows a Big 10 approach. Phantom Regiment first played Elsa's in 1979. It has been our corps song ever since and the corps has performed it as an encore piece an to alumni ever since then. Btw, I love FAMU's repertoire. Lots of great pieces. Oh, and KSU does not have an incredible marching band, lol. But thank you for the compliment. FAMU plays with way more balls, lol

  • @samrshelley wait no way, a world class drum corps that rehearses 12+ hours a day every day of the summer plays better than a college band?? wow i had no clue. idiot

  • @Benefactors Ummm, why don't you talk to the one who disagreed with me. Idiot

  • @samrshelley k i apologize, i was mainly pissed at theflyhalf's negative comment about marching bands and thought you were going along with him, but i see you also appreciate bands.i'm a big dci fan but i hate it when their members put down other marching groups

  • @Benefactors Its all good. I march Regiment (which I love to death) and I am in marching band. I love Regiment far and above the other, but I also enjoy marching band (free tickets to watch a top 10 football team, and I am a lead trumpet so I get to scream :).). There isn't a day where I wish marching band could be like drum corps, but its not. And there are days where that's definitely a good thing.

  • @Macnugget11 I'm sorry but you can't tell me this version is more enjoyable to listen to. You simply can't. And if you want to talk about emotion as a musician I promise you no one has played Elsa'a Procession to the Cathedral with more emotion than did the 80 members of the Regiment hornline on finals. Now I still like this version too, especially the first 3 minutes the most, because there is a lot of beauty. I appreciate this version a lot, and I'm jealous our marching band isnt this good. :P

  • @samrshelley Now who's trolling videos? Band is not drum corps, retard.

  • @euphmmx You mad?

  • @samrshelley Nah, bro. U r mad.

  • @euphmmx Haha, only if you say so

  • EPIC!!!

  • Phantom Regiment = Art

  • Pretty cool, especially for a Marching band! But noone can top Phantom Regiment when they played it.

  • hubba 100!

  • The Hundred blowing and you still understand what they're playing.... To bad other can't do the same.

  • is this video taped at somewhere in Africa?

  • @ethusiasm birmingham in 2007. famu vs. southern game

  • William D. Revelli, University of Michigan Symphony Band.

    That is all.

  • The woodwinds make me emotional listening to this! Wow!! Spectacular!!!

  • That was so Beautiful, Who would have thought this song could be played at a Football Game. Wow

  • yu dnt kno how much i love this song man tryna get my band directior to let us play dis man

  • 2 words: Phantom Regiment

  • YIKES...in a good way.

  • Oh snap I just realized....this was the year I was an escort.....I remember this in Birmingham....Made me just....fall out. That's what music is....cut the radio off.

  • gross..........

  • R.I.P DR. FOSTER! YOU WILL BE MISSED!

  • YES!!!! FINALLY SOME WAGNER!!!!!!!

  • WOW every time I watch this video over and over and over again I realize these are some geniuses. Now I'm a WILDCAT and at first I didn't like FAMU's band but have to give them this one that was AMAZING........MEAC has the better bands and SOUND hands down!!!!

  • @princegemini88 Thank you for being mature about your response. I have been trying to get ALL of us to stop spewing hate. Everybody has a different style. I understand rivalries, but DANG!!! When are we going to get mature enough to give each other a pat on the back? I am so tired of the immaturity. So I say as Rattler to a Wildcat. "Thank You."

  • big band equals easy staggerin breathin...sounding wonderful but not foolin anybody...just saying...pull a dci last note when they be only marching 50 people and even that is a stretch

  • is that two columns of sousaphones i see?!

  • my band is pplaying this song for are spring soncert and its going to be amazing! (PHS)

  • LOL I love how the band waved su's ghuntry asses goodbye! Watching Dr. White increase the band's volume with the easy sweep of his hand at the end gave me goosebumps! FAMU puttin on a world class show without even being on the field! I LOVE MY SCHOOL!!!!

  • How gorgeous. I would love to have seen this band marched onto the field playing this at the 1936 olympics. Now that would have been something.

  • The large amount of piccolos in this band bring out the woodwinds normally obscured in a Marching Band. This is an awesome piece of music and the drama and energy delivered by this group are outstanding.

  • My band Director told us to look at this

  • Come on...give them a little credit.

At least they try to play a classic like Elsa's. Not some shitty ghetto song from the hood...

  • the end of this song always makes me cry, ....except this time.. kinda just made me grind my teeth til it was over and ready to go to a better vid.

  • GOTA LUV IT

  • WOW amazing, that's why i love FAMU!

  • Great job! I love this piece!

  • were in a class of our own thats why we get the respect we deserve cause we love the difficult music presented to us n play for america

  • 2:22 Dayum!!!

  • beautiful..no other band can play this and make it sound as good as they do. maybe Cookman..

  • I assure you famu is the best band . If you're skeptical just compare performance records.

  • uhhhhhhh

famu doesnt try to blow the valves off their horns dude..CLEARLY you have never heard Southern, Alabama State, Texas Southern and Jackson State. they blast everything at it sounds terrible

famu is in a class of its own

  • famu is in the top three..under jsu and su

  • under JSU? lol

    1)FAM

    2)SU

    3)JSU

    4)NORFOLK

all other bands dont matter to me..no other bands can touch them 3

  • What person in their right mind, puts FAMU, SU, and JSU in the same sentence?! SU has a new Band Director (my dad Lawrence Jackson) & my highshcool had a better sound than they do; however, he is working diligently to CORRECT the intonation & other glitches that are troubling. It's getting better but it will take time. I'm a band rat & SU' s marching style is complex but their sound is wack! Stop talking & listen! How can a 200 piece band only have four woodwind players? Hold it down FAMU!!

  • negro Mr.Jackson aint your dad..

and he not a "new" director..been there since 2006 buddy.

and of course FAMU, SU, JSU and Cookman go in the same sentence..they are just about the top bands every year! add Norfolk in there too

  • " Negro please" hahahahahah.... how come he said is his dad and it aint even his dad hahahah

  • Hell no. SU is loud but sloppy at times. JSU is good, but their balance needs improvement. Versatility, technique and sound quality - it's 1. FAMU 2. BCU 3. NSU 4. SU

  • famu has the strongest woodwinds EVER. lol, and i'm a tuba player.

  • I love it!

  • I love Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral and this performance by the famed FAMU band is simply sensational. The FAMU band and The Million Dollar Band of The University of Alabama are two of the south's greatest musical organizations. The Million Dollar Band's on-field version of Amazing Grace with the Atlanta Bagpipes and Herald trumpets was a show that can never be duplicated or replicated.

  • I don't think you're telling them anything they don't know. Listen to the clip of their wind ensemble doing "Elsa's." Keep context in mind. This is from a historic, annual contest in which bands intend, in part, to "blow the doors off'" the opponents. Power is prized over nuance and refinement. So maybe it is indeed as "affective" as it could be - and effective too.

  • I think my face melted around 2:26! That was, in a word, spectacular!

  • my gosh........... AHHHH I wanna be in FAMU now lol

  • This is AWESOME!!! You're probably the first marching band to play this so well that I've heard.

  • hubba 100

    -2

  • FAMU is the first band I heard play this piece. Now since then i've heard orchestras and other wind ensemble's play this but I got to say that FAMU is the only band that plays this song with a passion that just resonates with me, it's my favorite version by far.

  • (deep breath) HUBBBA HUN-IT!!!

  • Yes Pics!!!!!!!! They sound so lovely, and those baritones sound orgasmic!!!

  • I'm not a true fan of FAMU. However, I must give credit this was some fly azz shit. Great musicianship... Whoever was on the other side caught a nice whipping with that piece.

  • If you dont have music appreciation after hearing that....YOU DO NOW!!!!!!!!

  • @lroper tell em' again!

  • Man.....

  • holy crap....that's amaaazing! Who would of ever thought this song could be pulled off at a football game! lol

  • im feeling that long asss fermata on the last note lol

  • Thats what im talkin bout....HUBBA DAT 100!!!

  • Yea they killed me when they sent SU back to the bus after hearing this Man if people was going by Musicanship during the 5qt FAMU would have got it hands down but like all sims they want hypness and FAMU didn't play into that shit during the 5th Doc said no kill them with 6 insutrements playing 4 different runs at onces and let the tubas blow lows that make other bands highs looke JR high Great Job FAMU marching 100

  • yea so tru......i hate when how swac bands just care about wats jammin and who is the loudest. They sacrifice musicanship for volume and radio songs its sad but tru. lol

  • wish I could have been there to here it live!

  • Lol. Hubba Doc!

  • and okay woodwinds, i hear yall!!

  • lol bayshawn, you so nosy!

  • i kno, i just wanna kno how rough his life is gonna be
