  • Open Source my friends

  • I have an absolute honour of working under Prof. Anil Gupta at Indian Institute of Management, Ahemdabad. The guy is a genious. Totally commited to the cause of uplifting people. Can you imagine at such a age he works for 20 hours ina day. Everyday you can find him talking to fruit vendors, tea makers and all around the campus listening to there problem and suggesting solutions. Respect!

  • You clearly know nothing outside your own back yard and from your comments you care nothing for others unless it benefits you. He is doing nothing for innovators.

  • insensitivity of people to other people's difficulty well illustrasted by a few westerners who tried to stop buliding of narmada dam in India which would have brought water to villagers so they would not have to travel a mile everyday. One insensitive lady said that it would spoil the scenery, ie seeing women with utensils on theri head walking to collect water. This was years back

  • @akalchhe

I am an Indian and I do not support Narmada dam. It has benefitted only the State of Gujarat and destroyed thousands of acres of green forests in Madhya Pradesh. Even in Gujarat it has destroyed fertile farmland and displaced hundreds of farmers with nowhere to go.

Corruption in payment of compensation ensured that very few people got anything.

The environmental and social cost of Narmada dam is far more than the benefit to a few rich villagers of Gujarat.

  • @Achintyanath

The fault is not of the Narmada Dam project but that of corruption that permeates Indian society. I still stick to my opinion about the westerners motives for obstructing the building of the dam.. If you had seen the programme on television, you would have felt the same.We should have more sensitivity to our own people in India and also know that outsiders do not have any interest in development of India. They use intelligent ways of obstructing progress, disguised as doing good.

  • The insensivity of wealthy people towards these villagers difficulties is no better illustrated than by a television programmed I saw a few years ago, where a few British whites were doing their best to stop the buliding of a dam that would have brought water to the villagers. One insensitive english female actually said they would no longer be able to see beautiful scenes such as womern with utensils on their head walking to collect water.

  • Most of the indian professionals and many western people masking as intellects exploit others ideas...and gain popularity and value through them.

and the westerns under the name of Company contracts exploit the Ideas of Developing world, and name it as western invention or developement.

Indians not even pay Value / money, to the real Idea owners, but Westerns atleast will pay the Value / money through good salary & Promotions.

  • I'll take an air compressed car and one of those clay frying pans please. Last i checked teflon isnt good for you.

  • Indian, aka Hindu, business practices are the only counter to legitimately challenge jewish practices that are decimating countries around the world.

  • Veddy good yes....veddy good indeed. Makes some great points...we all should be recognized for what comes from within...and how we are able to participate in the BIG picture...as a part of the whole.

  • Veddy good yes....veddy good indeed. Makes some great points...we all should be recognized for what comes from within...and how are able to participate in the BIG picture...as a part of the whole.

  • actually poor is the best teacher

  • ahh fuck you

  • I will disagree with one of the comments made. Maslow said himself that his hierarchy of needs was a generalization. Yes, people are capable of reaching their higher self despite unmet needs but on the whole, you need to be connected with your tribe through well met needs to find success. The standard of living has nothing to do with the needs. The perception of how those needs are being met is the key. If you are poor, you may not even know it if this state is the norm. Maslow = Genius

  • I 've invented a new porn position. does that make's me innovative?

  • @boqallaf yes but some degree..if tht provides u more enjoyment :p

  • Even though im muslim, and pretty religous, but Gupta leaders are one of the leaders i show the most respect to. They are one of the wisest and most humble leaders a person could meet.

    Hope TED calls him again

  • What a great argument for capitalism.

  • it was very good. im not indian but anyone can understand what these people bring to the world

  • at the end he said a very smart thing: non material incentives!

yes yes yes. not because its romantic but because it works.

  • I like it, and what i like most is the fact that he piked the idea and his philosophy from a honey bay !! it's very amazing what small ignorant and non conscious bug can teach us clever human bean !

  • mechanization of agrigulture? isnt htat wat the environemntal movement is a gainst...sorta ironic

  • Sometimes, I think my comments matter

  • What happened to the 18 minute limit?

  • consider a world where every person is literate and has an opportunity to pursue knowledge in whatever field they wish... human advancement and ecological consideration..

  • "Give me a place to stand and I will move the world" Great quote.

  • @nightmathzombieethan It was written "word" no "world". But we got the point, like you did

  • @Rombizio LOL I didn't even notice! I should have, the rest of the english on here is pretty "broken". Still a neat quote though...

  • Read Adam Smith. Rational self-interest (as opposed to outright exploitation and greed) means engaging the self-interest of other people.

  • lol captions FAIL

  • lol at one of his slides i saw "u" instead of you

  • He makes total sense! If masses don't' need something then why not ask the local people to produce products for their specific needs... Very simple... I like his idea of simple solutions, efficiency and less waste. Innovative solutions for diverse problems.... I loved the bicycle / boat :) awesomeee I want it lol.

  • @imperiallion congratulations, you've just made the most racist, narrow-minded, misinformed comment on this video so far.

  • @imperiallion

decades back, a man wearing just a dhoti lead a nation over a nation of tuxedos... mind matters and not clothes...

and yes, we are APU BASTARDS, and we are proud of it sir...

may i suggest, pls respect others to earn their respect...

  • @imperiallion

may i aslo tell u that this conference was held in India-the land of ur APUS and not in US of A

    cheers

    vasista

  • @imperiallion you have just wasted 23 min of ur life. this man talk about mind.. it seem you got very little of it

  • @imperiallion TED is not American. YouTube is accessible worldwide.

I recommend getting a real education. You clearly know nothing outside your own back yard and from your comments you care nothing for others unless it benefits you. YOU and people like you are exactly why these countries ARE third world. Keep shopping at Wal-Mart - the largest trading partner with China - while you somehow take pride in the nothingness which is USA.

  • @imperiallion not smart, not funny and not useful. try reading a fucking book.

  • @imperiallion Right, the whole world is America, they should all dress like you and talk like you, because you are an American, all bow down to the mighty ignorant American, no class, no grammar, no tolerance or even knowledge there is a world beyond his borders. If you wonder why people hate Americans, and your country is falling apart at the seams, look no further than your mirror.

  • @imperiallion let me see your face, after 10 years

  • @imperiallion Fucking ugly pricks. ..you make me sick.

  • @imperiallion Mmmm...another candidate for the release of personal details. Let's see what you say when we know who you are and where you live. You have a couple of days to try to erase your crap from the digital trail...cause when it's released, it's released. Alexandra Wallace all over again

  • i don't have a problem with his speech. his speed in the presentation of the language is foreign, but, no, his words are not.

  • DO YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT?

... I have an opening on Tuesday.

  • The Antelope (or whatever it is) is so beautiful.

  • India needs more capitalism.

  • @reapfreak And the west needs less...

  • @Elephantintheroom01 Because socialism has done so much right? Compare countries like China to Greece. Massive growth versus retarded welfare debt.

  • @321lawc I don't think socialism is a very good system, but neither is capitalism, nor democracy when you come to it. Maybe if they were all based on fairness and justice, but they all have an idiology which allows one human to harm another.

I think China is a terrible place, and i thnk Greece has a good chance of becouming a great place! Those rioters are stopping the financial conquest of their country by the IMF and bank of the Euro. They will set up the people of Greece in MORE debt.

  • @Elephantintheroom01 You've never lived in either place so how would you know if you like it or hate it? Fool.

  • @leejae You must be replying to someone ellse, i have said nothing to that effect.

  • AMEN!!!!!

  • This is one of the best TEDtalks :D

  • half of the time I didn't understand what he was saying...

  • very hard to understand what he is seeing...

  • @accordeonist and it is very hard to understand what you are writing. Atleast he knows better english than you do.

  • good talk :)

  • makes you think

  • does anyone know where to buy those clay pans?

  • @rytis1 at any local indian store they are called tawa

  • @aminizle

No, I'm talking about non teflon, non metal, clay non toxic tawa. I don't think they are available.

  • I'm thrilled that someone has acknowledged the intelligence and innovation of those on the economic margins and developed a way to pool the knowledge and give them credit. This is one of the most enjoyable talks I've seen in the TEDosphere, second only to the one about children in rural India learning and teaching each other how to use a computer without preknowledge or external instruction.

  • I understood (maybe because I'm not a native speaker) but subtitles would make watching this a hell of a lot easier.

  • accent is thick, but perfectly understandable; if you're used to it that is. it helps to live in UK cities where most convenience stores are owned by Indian and Pakistani people :)

  • Doesn't that sewing machine already exist?

  • I want to make a bike like that.

  • Ok, I can't understand this dude. Damn. Thick indian accent.

  • @Trigunflame You cannot be serious.

  • @ejay286 The opening seconds are Fine, after about 2min in, he starts speaking rapidly in that thick accent. Perhaps You have Miracle Ears and can decrypt that in real-time. I can't wait to read the YouTube captions when it finishes processing this video. I'm sure it will be hilarious.

  • @Trigunflame "I start looking at my own well. they looked at the time for the penis ten years. almost I was dying. had instances. often argues that the protection. my birth date and on this as a President." etc etc. I told you the captions would be hilarious.

  • @Trigunflame Ohh come on its not that bad. I can even understand it! :P

  • @Trigunflame me either.. having to really break it down... so im totally missing the message..

  • @Trigunflame it's not that difficult

  • @pancho8721 Well if you're really from the UK, I don't expect you to have trouble. Half the time, you Brits are nearly as hard to understand as this guy; No offense.

  • @Trigunflame hiterland how bad can his english be if he can say this

  • @Trigunflame Tallyho, what? what? Pip pip, apples and pears, shindigs all around!

Its because, english... the English language... is OUR language :P

  • @Elephantintheroom01 I'm not talking about verbiage, yours (UK) or his (the speaker). I'm talking about the thick accent that accompanies it; That alone is what makes it difficult for me to understand him (or the Brits) when they speaks quickly.

  • Very Interesting
