Overall, I think the Megatron from TF Animated was the best version of the character made so far. I think the only Megatron more pathetic than the G1 version was the one from Robots in Disguise....you know the one that transformed into a two headed dragon?
I can't pick a "best" Megatron because they all tend to bring something different to the table. Using only the American cartoon versions, Animated ranks quite high, but the original actually did get good characterization for the 80's, including actually caring about the fate of his troops in at least some episodes.
RiD sadly left the coolest parts of its Megatron on the cutting room floor when they "adapted" it, but I still like him better than the UT Megatrons.

I get the feeling a lot of people commenting on this were born after G1 was long gone from the air waves.
The deal about MEgatron's gun mode is that it was supposed to be the ultimate weapon, a weapon so strong it was a plot device. In the original film Megatron's gun mode kills several characters with a single shot.
Think of Megatron as something Targetmasters aspire to.
Sometimes I think of animated Megatron yelling "THE FIRST MEGATRON TURNS INTO A USLESS HANDGUN!?" But that that's just me. Still, G1 Megatron's gun form isn't completely usless.
ha ha... well he didn't or wasn't exposed in the G1 series... all i knew was his energon mace he used on the first episode of G1 transformers... i think he used it during the movie animated G1 movie.. even the barrel at his back in robot mode was rarely or not used unlike during the more advanced versions of Transformers....dang im wishing they can somewhat have a reissue or bring back the G1 Megatron on the toy shelfs...classic not only by the looks but the whole itself.:D
I liked G1 Megatron but his alt.mode was silly to me. I didn't like him shrinking. He transformed into an immobile weapon and had to be weilded by another Decepticon. It was usualy Starscream. Why didn't Starscream just bash Megatron in his gun mode? TFA Megatron had everything that made G1 great and more. Also he can kick ass no matter which form he's in.
Yah, the entire point of the movie was to introduce a new line of characters. Basically, each 'bot they killed off(may their Sparks find peace) discontinued the toy. I cried when Optimus died!
'then' megs can fly, roll, and, he has a less obvious disguise. I mean really, when you see an assault chopper with a mounted fusion cannon, which do you think is gonna be a gigantic alien robot sworn to destroy the earth?
the helicopter is from transformers animated that takes place in the future but it would seem frightening to see an assault copter in the city anyways

It was from the 80's, and I have watched it. Whilst I do enjoy G1 to a certain level, I think Megatron should be able to do some damage by himself. With such a small, immobile, dependant disguise, there's almost no point in having it.
they tried to explain it in a couple of the comic series by saying it compressed his fire power, making the blasts stronger. But yeah, he's transformed once in IDW since coming to Earth.

Also, he wasn't cowering with Hot Rod, he was executing a clever tactic: holding an ally hostage so that Prime couldn't fight back without endangering Hot Rod. G1 Megs wasn't afraid of death either; he pretended to be.

Overall, I think the Megatron from TF Animated was the best version of the character made so far. I think the only Megatron more pathetic than the G1 version was the one from Robots in Disguise....you know the one that transformed into a two headed dragon?

I can't pick a "best" Megatron because they all tend to bring something different to the table. Using only the American cartoon versions, Animated ranks quite high, but the original actually did get good characterization for the 80's, including actually caring about the fate of his troops in at least some episodes.
RiD sadly left the coolest parts of its Megatron on the cutting room floor when they "adapted" it, but I still like him better than the UT Megatrons.

I get the feeling a lot of people commenting on this were born after G1 was long gone from the air waves.
The deal about MEgatron's gun mode is that it was supposed to be the ultimate weapon, a weapon so strong it was a plot device. In the original film Megatron's gun mode kills several characters with a single shot.
Think of Megatron as something Targetmasters aspire to.

Sometimes I think of animated Megatron yelling "THE FIRST MEGATRON TURNS INTO A USLESS HANDGUN!?" But that that's just me. Still, G1 Megatron's gun form isn't completely usless.

ha ha... well he didn't or wasn't exposed in the G1 series... all i knew was his energon mace he used on the first episode of G1 transformers... i think he used it during the movie animated G1 movie.. even the barrel at his back in robot mode was rarely or not used unlike during the more advanced versions of Transformers....dang im wishing they can somewhat have a reissue or bring back the G1 Megatron on the toy shelfs...classic not only by the looks but the whole itself.:D

I liked G1 Megatron but his alt.mode was silly to me. I didn't like him shrinking. He transformed into an immobile weapon and had to be weilded by another Decepticon. It was usualy Starscream. Why didn't Starscream just bash Megatron in his gun mode? TFA Megatron had everything that made G1 great and more. Also he can kick ass no matter which form he's in.

Yah, the entire point of the movie was to introduce a new line of characters. Basically, each 'bot they killed off(may their Sparks find peace) discontinued the toy. I cried when Optimus died!

It was from the 80's, and I have watched it. Whilst I do enjoy G1 to a certain level, I think Megatron should be able to do some damage by himself. With such a small, immobile, dependant disguise, there's almost no point in having it.

they tried to explain it in a couple of the comic series by saying it compressed his fire power, making the blasts stronger. But yeah, he's transformed once in IDW since coming to Earth.
