You're all mistaken, and so is the maker of this film: the instruments as well as the drawings shown are all from 16th century off till 19th, and none of them have anything to do with religion. The man on the rack, Cutberth Simion, was a political intrigant and all the other torture scenes illustrate pure criminal justice interrogationsal and punishing treatments. Nothing to do with medieval times, nor religion.

They didn't tear limbs OFF, just pulled hard enough to make it hurt very bad. Just like torture devices always do. To make it stop, you would admit all your crimes and betray your allies. That's the idea. Tthe film is confusing: there are torture devices shown, but also execution devices. And I wish they 'd stop talking about "religion" an "medieval". Is anybody silly enough to think only Catholics used to torture, and not Chinese, nor Muslims, nor protestants, or Africans, or atheists?
