  • just wanna know how to say 'how are you.' in sign. Not all this. \:

  • hold 5 lol

  • how do you indicate more than 1 man or woman?

  • @twitchypj You can't. You will have to say "5 man" or "Those woman", etc. You will have to describe it, I believe.

  • let me ask you if there any different if i do the sign with my left hand?

  • @sararginorio You sign with your dominant hand. If you write with your left hand, you mainly sign with your left hand. Such as the fingerspelling, signing, etc.

  • noo she has an msu shirt on. well i wouldnt be able to tell if she didnt teach me the alphabet. thanks! but go blue.

  • Shes not wrong. There more then one sign for words. Her videos are really good and helpful with everyone, especially beginners. Try using sites like aslpro.com or signingsavvy. They provide great detail. You can also message me on here if you have any questions :)

  • Look, sign language isnt sett in stone. there are always multiple signs for a word. try to Google a website for american sign languge.

  • I don't know whether she's right or wrong because I know only a few signs in ASL. However, I've studied Finnish sign language for a year and a half. I've had a million times a teacher say to me "oh no, you can't sign like that" even though it's a sign I've learnt from another deaf teacher. As many people have already pointed out, sign language varies A LOT. Anyways, thank you for this video, I really want to learn more ASL! (:

  • your the best thank you and everyone out there everything is complicated even proper English which alot of you seem to suck at

  • You're a great teacher.

  • These are awesome videos!!! I have always wanted to learn to sign and have had several programs that just confused me. Lol. Thank you for sharing this!

  • I just started dating my girlfriend 1 1/2 ago and she is hard of hearing. I have to say that your videos have been extremely helpful to me and I am a lot more comfortable when speaking with her friends who also hard of hearing or deaf. Kudos to you :)

  • Thank you so much for the examples:0) Now my fiansece and I can now commuincate better:0)

  • Ok so I am hard of hearing, though currently my rate of hearing loss is increasing as I age, and as I'm in my senior year I pretty much decided that I really need to learn sign language. Only problem is, I learn from lipreading/slight hearing/and visually. So basically it is quite hard for me to make sense of most sites that only have charts. So far I am learning a lot from this vid and I am really grateful that you made it. Thanks!

  • @MusicManiac931 You can also try underkd or cccasl2008 those are great asl sites on youtube as well. THis is not so bad either.

  • Every country has its own sign language and also since with in every country we have diffrent dialect, that also accurs in sign language, so you kind of need to know your region. words and expressions are diffrent in diffrent regions

  • She isn't wrong she is teaching you AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE... each language has its own sign language.

  • Your videos aree awesome! I've wanted to learn sign lanuage for AGESS Now & i know the basics now:) Keep the videos going so i ca learn moree!

  • @gw002n u mind putting up some ASL vids? for beginners? i agree with Jules14x, im tired of getting unclear videos and there so many ways to sign and idk which one to use or whether they r all correct.

  • Well where is your video gw002m? Don't complain if you're not going to do anything about it.

  • Your videos are great. I wish you would please make more.

  • I take ASL in college and I can tell you they are very close to what I am learning. But you must keep in mind just like spoken speech there is slang in ASL. So if it looks a little off to what you see around where you live keep that in mind. Just learn what you can then find events hosted by the Deaf around where you live. They will understand what you are saying and show you how they say it around you.

  • i HATE how smug she looks when she's signing. is that part of it?

  • these are so helpful! Thanks!

  • All her damn signs are the same...

  • i can interstand most of it from abs's switched at birth

  • i wish i to learn sign the correct way.....i dont want to buy a book if its not necessary

  • Is the sign for you all the sameas yall

  • you look like Katie Leclerc

  • you look mad

  • i hate how i learned some of her signs only then to think to see the comments and to see SHE WAS WRONG ugh whyyy??

  • so if shes wrong can someone tell me where i can find somebody that knows how to sign? online that is

  • @Jules14x there are many different dialects of sign language, just like any other language. Some people may perceive signs as being 'wrong' when in reality the signer is just using a different dialect. Unless you are trying to enter a profession that involves using ASL, I think in general if you learn from youtube even if the signs aren't 100% correct, signers will know what you are saying.

  • Very helpful, thank u

  • i dont get this its so fast

  • im lost ahhhh

  • @jules14x ive had similar problem. best video your gunna get is this one.

  • @Jules14x it is correct isnt it?

  • @Jules14x how do you know if she is correct if you don't know sign language?

  • @Jules14x I'd reccomend taking a class in school or something.

  • @Jules14x maybe you are trying to learn other sign languages not asl

  • I love signing and I understand it but it's hard to find others who can do it! Lol!

  • Thank you this has helped me so much.

  • thats really easy kind of common sense and basic body language nice videos thanks

  • the silence is killing me -___-

  • You're pretty

  • I keep seeing how some people are saying she's wrong. Well, I have a brother who is deaf, and just like with spoken languages, some people speak with an accent. One deaf person might sign "mom" with their fingers closed, while others leave them straight. It just depends on that person's "accent"

  • Thank you for posting this video...it's a very helpful resource for those of us who want to learn some basic ASL.

  • @mySTALEMATE-- the person who claims she is misleading/inaccurate is just an ASL teacher who charges for his own online course, and it appears that anyone teaching ASL that ISN'T him is subjected to his barrage of criticism. It's a pretty disgusting smear campaign and a disservice to the deaf community by trying to discourage people from learning ASL...unless we're paying him to teach us.

  • @mds1978 Ah yes, you can use that lame excuse if you want... BUT, how do you explain ALL THE OTHERS who ALSO say her videos are incorrect? Are they also on smear campaigns? What do THEY gain from telling others that this girl's videos are inaccurate? Stop and think about that for a second...

  • Do not talk about a Ex unless asked about past relationship, it could seem

you still have feelings or not over that person and make the other person

on date seem like a rebound or that the relationship will go nowhere

  • for those who claim she is misleading and and inaccurate, can you give a good resource and not just leave those of us who are interested in ASL twisting in the wind?

  • @mySTALEMATE Yes, I can give you a good resource - myself. I am Deaf. I am a fluent user of ASL. I am a certified ASL teacher with many years of teaching at the college and high school level. Check out my channel if you want to see how ASL is correctly done and also how it should be taught/learned.

  • Omg.

So many people saying she is wrong.

I don't know if she is - I'm not deaf. Just trying to learn ASL.

Where can I learn this without having people say "oh she's wrong," on every single video I find of Signers??????

    Please, help.

  • @StrayGhostWolf This girl is not a good source for learning ASL. How do I know? I am Deaf. I am a fluent user of ASL. I am a certified ASL teacher with many years of teaching at the college and high school level. Check out my channel if you want to see how ASL is correctly done and also how it should be taught/learned.

  • @StrayGhostWolf She is Correct, and very good...

  • be my teacher ,,,

  • very useful tips Id also like to learn to read lips ! lol And you know she has an awesome body....language !!! I mean body language ! lol

  • @checkmaminoune Wow... MAJORLY crude. Sheesh. You go ahead and "watch her body... language." For the rest of you, I recommend looking for more accurate sources to learn ASL.

  • She has some sexy fingers....nice..love her hands, too.

  • I think her sign for they/them is wrong. It looks just like he/she/it. Aren't you supposed to use a sweeping motion for they/them? I am just starting out but other sites and dictionaries such as Dr. Bill's show sweeping motion. Also, her speaking during signing is VERY distracting. Can someone confirm my doubts regArding this sign? Thanks.

  • what is the sign for "we" and "our"?

  • who cares she's hot

  • @gw002m Do you know any good channels or sites for just learning ASL? I love watching the songs, but I'd like to find some more tutorials, and I know you said this one isn't super accurate, so I thought you might know some good ones :]

  • @jbz43z Two that come immediately to mind are LifePrint by Bill Vicars, and WestwoodASL (mine).

  • I agree that her signs for man and woman are a bit sloppy. They do in a way look like grandma and grandpa because she slides her hand down and it kind of looks as if she's doing that sign. She should be more careful with her signs because she can really screw up when using other signs that are similar to things you wouldn't want to say. I also find voicing while signing distractive. Nice try, but I just as I wouldn't learn French from someone who's had 3 classes I wouldn't do the same for ASL.

  • wel your good and i am learning off of u adn other people but ya i think u are the best so far

  • your hot

  • I tried subscribing to your site and it keeps directing me to a chinese sex culture website, r u aware of this?

  • Her website has a trojan horse in it (I mentioned it on one of her other video comments). She's obviously completely unaware of it. My advice - scan your computer for possible viruses and then stay away from her website.

  • Awesome! I cannot think of a better way to introduce people to ASL.

  • Good teacher and very easy on the eyes...

  • you are such a good teacher!

  • Some of your signs, (Man, Woman, etc) are wrong. And some of your other signs are misleading... for example, to sign "HER book," you would use the open hand (palm), not what you describe in this video.

ASL is not based on English, and teaching it through English will create misunderstandings and conceptual inaccuracies. You should be clear about this, or you are simply teaching the language wrong.

I would hate to see your students stumble because you taught something wrong.

  • Kristen is clear. Try watching her face, you will agree.

  • I was watching everything she was doing, including her face. No, she is not clear. Some of her signs were wrong or misleading, as I said above.

I am a fluent signer, involved in the Deaf community and a student at Gallaudet. I can identify if someone is providing wrong or misleading information. Her videos are anything but "clear," and it is frustrating for people who care about the language to see misconceptions being spread.

  • @gw002m completely disagree.. if she's wrong there are a lot of teachers, sign books and a few deaf people doing it wrong too (maybe many deaf, but I've over been engaged with a few that use these same signs)

  • Well, there probably are many people who teach the language wrong. I don't dispute that. But being used by many people does not make it correct.

I stand by my earlier example. The sign used for "her" in the sentences, "Give it to her." and "It is her book" would be different. Kristen does not explain this difference, which could lead to people using the wrong sign. ASL is not English-based, so signs should be based on meaning, not the English word. She doesn't explain that, and she should

  • And her signs for "Man" and "Woman" look more like the signs for grandfather and grandmother than anything else. Those are not correct.

  • @gw002m I know not much on ASL as Id like to but I do know the basics and I agree w/ u. Her signs are totally wrong for woman n man or at least its different from what i learned on my own.

P.S. I see U go to Gallaudet & I wasn't sure if they take hearing students, they do right? Cause I saw this program "Through Deaf Eyes" and it wasn't clear to me if they did.

  • @crl6pn Yes, I'm a student at Gallaudet. They do take hearing students. They take a limited number of hearing undergraduates (called HUGs), though the cap (current at 5% of an incoming class) may be lifted to increase enrollment. Hearing students must be fluent in ASL and most are CODAs (have Deaf parents). The graduate school functions differently- about half the grad students are hearing, and signing requirements vary by program. I am a hearing grad student here.

  • @gw002m Well thats sounds great cuz ever since I saw that program I taught that be the perfect place to study so Im just planning to start school here in Texas for my two years including ASL and some Interperting Preparation Program so hopefully by the end id be good enough in ASL to start at Gallaudet.

thanx very much on the info.

  • @crl6pn No problem. I actually work in the Graduate Admissions office here at Gallaudet, so if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. :).

  • if @gw002m goes to Gallaudet, it means that A) he/she is deaf and/or B) he/she is around deaf people all day. Therefor @gw002m would definitely know more.

  • @gw002m I'm an ASL 2 student, nearing ASL 3. I'm looking for videos that will aid in grasping ASL grammar. As a fluent signer, is there anyone on YouTube that you would recommend?

    Much thanks!

  • @ToferOrourke Of course! If you want songs interpreted to music (as many students do), I recommend zephyreros, ewitteborg, or rosaleeshow. They are Deaf or CODA and are very skilled.

As far as learning ASL, I recommend learning from Deaf people, in class or just hanging out. BYUFanatic is a Deaf ASL teacher, and places a lot of videos online... they can be very helpful depending on your level. Learning in person is usually preferable to learning online, as you can get feedback. Good luck!

  • @gw002m she is trying to help the uninformed learn a new language, how about helping her :-)

  • @Afterburner8004, she is uninformed herself, so we are trying to inform her! That helps her a lot! :-)

  • @Afterburner8004 By explaining why I disapprove, offering suggestions to others, and showing her situations in which her "teaching" is misleading... I am helping her and others. I do not want to make my own video, ASL is not my native language either, so I try to help in whatever way I can. I think I've been more constructive than demeaning in my criticism, and I try to point out examples so that people can recognize ASL from SEE or English based signing.

  • @gw002m could you suggest any videos i could watch that are clearer and teach the signs correctly?

  • @mmytornadoisresting, check out BYUFanatic on YouTube.

  • @gw002m Thanks for you input. I'm new to sign language and I'm looking for some videos to help me in the process. Do you have any suggestions?

  • @palutubevideos, try Westwood.com online.

  • @palutubevideos As Banerika said, look for videos from Deaf people, who are fluent in the language.

Personally, I caution against learning online. There is so much of the language (classifiers, facial expressions, etc) that does not have a direct English translation, or signs that depend heavily on context. When you can't get feedback or ask questions for clarification, you may be learning wrong. Try to take a class or meet some Deaf people and learn from experience and using ASL, if you can

  • @gw002m Yet another militant member of the Deaf community who is going to find fault whenever someone being able to hear tries to teach sign.

It's amazing the bigotry that that deaf community has towards those who hear. People trying to intergrate hearing and deaf people are regulary attacked on YouTube.

  • @TiminPhoenix I hate to break it to you, but your bitterness/rage is misplaced. I'm not Deaf, nor a CODA. I'm not against hearing people trying to teach sign, and I think that's clear from my comments. I'm against people trying to teach asl INCORRECTLY, which is clearly what this girl is doing. You cannot teach something without some degree of fluency, which she CLEARLY does not have. I'd be against it if she was teaching English, Spanish, Arabic, ASL, or any language. So... you're wrong.

  • @gw002m I wouldn't worry about Tim. He is an extremely ignorant, bigoted, and vindictive person who loves to attack Deaf individuals and also those who support ASL and Deaf culture being taught by those who REALLY know (as opposed to students posing as teachers). Why he loves attacking and calling US the militants when he is the bigoted one? I have no idea.

  • @BYUFanatic I don't get too worked up over comments people make to me, I just like to set the record straight in case someone else, who is less aware of his ignorance, happens upon his comments. It's one thing for me to ignore him, but he wouldn't have changed my mind anyway... if someone with little/no ASL/Deaf culture knowledge comes over to the right side because I set the record straight, then I'll be happy. :).

  • @gw002m I'm glad you commented this! I'm also glad i read this before i watched the video..

  • @gw002m I think you should make some video's! Because I'm trying to learn ASL, but all the comments say the video's are wrong. And I dont want to waste a lot of time learning something that Ill look stupid signing ... :D

  • @gw002m Make videos then!

  • @gw002m Do you know of any videos that are clear? I am really interested in ASL, but I don't want to learn it the wrong way...

  • @gw002m I am a complete novice at ASL but have 4 years invested in an other language and I just want to see If I'm able to point out a few misconceptions and you correct me if I'm wrong please. When doing the sign for he and she, you can't just point to the side because that's the sign for it. You must first do the sign for boy or girl + the sign for it. The sign for "that" is the letter "Y" followed by pointing. And you don't point for "there", that's a completely different sign.

  • @gw002m can you make a video !! I really wanna learn :)

  • thanks so much for posting these. i taught myself simple signs years ago when i met a girl in my dance class who was deaf and i'm so glad to get back in it and really start to learn

  • hey your vids are interesting and great! but i have a question, does it matter if you use your left or right hand for these signs?

  • It doesn't matter(:

I'm taking A.S.L a school and i'm 12 and in 6th grade. It's tricky but easy as you practice more and more(:

  • Hey, thank you for these tutorials. I just have 2 questions regarding the "girl" sign. Do you touch your face once or twice, or does it not matter. I noticed you did both.

Also, generally speaking, do i have to mouth the words as i sign? or is it only preferable?

    and

  • You have to mouth the words as you sign

(currently taking A.S.L as school, im in 6th grade and 12)

  • this is a really good language i love it. Your a great teacher

  • i can actually follow this!!

  • you're really pretttyyyy

  • This video was extremely informative thanks for posting it!

    (I love your hair)

  • I agree, sky777! She's really awesome. I've been following these videos for a few weeks. :-D

  • you are the best asl teacher i've seen on youtube. i have recently started learning and you were great, very enthusiastic :). would love to see more videos from you. Take care
