  • you're th best man!!!

  • if i dare to play something like simple off-beats on the snare, the other guys in the band already start complaining. if the other musicians in Dave's band can deal with this kind of stuff and not get confused, they are brilliant.

  • it's called "loose" but it doesn't sound loose to me.

  • i still want to play like this!!!! weckl is great...'nuff said.

  • He should do a drum competitions with this and win:D

  • close your eyes and it sounds like he has 10 hands... how the hell does he play those freaking grooves?!??

  • @mrabdrum Lots of practice and rudiments exercises by the dozen

  • tony allen over this guy and elvin jones and tony williams zach hill why not i hate the sound of school drummers with perfectly tuned drums

  • who can say what a perfect solo is its all talent to there own ,lets here yours you fucking annalist

  • I am a fan of the dry ride, you can hear the articulation and he can really wail on that thanng and produce a big sound with out all the ringing and overtones.♫

  • dry ride? that guy could play a lead gate for a ride and make it groove

  • ...it's beautiful...

  • 0 people disrespect Weckl. All´s good.

  • Loose mullet phrasing

  • king

  • Can someone elaborate to me what is Loose Phrasing and it's application??

  • @selenachong2 to not play straight playing with a count, in application it sounds loose and can used in many ways, drum solo, total change in musical direction of a song, certain types of jazz arund revolved around losse phrasing it really means that you're not playing every 16th or 8th note you're spacing things in odd distances in relation to the music.

  • @selenachong2

Space between notes, the placement of the notes, volume of what you are playing and dynamics are just a few things.

example: loose phrasing is implied that not the actual notes that have changed, but where and how you are using them to articulate phrases; changing the space between them to make them sound different, or awkward and unique.

for ex: dialect in language where English can be spoken with many different twists, do the same with speaking on the kit.

  • This guy seriously has to work on his timing. Its still a little bit off. Just kididng, I know that the whole point of loose phrasing. Great stuff!

  • What is that china china stack to his right, also does anyone know what pedals he uses?

  • @kentsmedblom i suppose they are yamaha

  • @javierdrummer07 yamaha recording custom to be exact!

  • @xxmlhedxx the best kit out there imo!

  • anybody know how to work on phrasing?!

  • he has crazy independance!!! not many drummers can do that!!!

  • This was probably the most important 1:30 of drumming I've ever seen that changed the way I played and thought about drums. Besides the Moeller tech...

  • @Lugnutpunk isnt it insane? Iv honestly never seen anything like this in entire life, its beautiful

  • that ride sounds like ass...the rest of the drum set sounds fine tho, and his playing is always so fluid

  • i think it might be a crash/ride

  • Everything sounds great. i love those toms. But that ride, it's just... too dry.

  • @ELBROSE nothing sounds great.. it's all processed to within an inch of its life...

  • @ELBROSE I dig a dry ride.

  • @ELBROSE well some people love dry rides. i definitely love that ride

  • omg just had a multi orgasm and jizz err where in my pants

  • This isn't the Back to Basics, this cut is from the Next Step DVD.

  • yeah... its from next step...

  • what do you mean?

this guy was never a part of iron maiden

  • i think he means influences wise

but im pretty sure nikko wasnt influenced by him, and they both play completely different styles

  • I understood a lot more of it after the second listening; heard a lot of 8 bar phrases. He sneaks in a lot of really nice ideas, I thought.

  • Ummm, what exactly *IS* losse about this? He sounds really tight ?

  • your parents might as well name you 'Fucking Asshole'

  • 1. i was responding to a guy that said "loose phrasing? it sounds pretty tight to me!", get it? so i responded accordingly, continuining the facetiousness. 2. weckl is probably my favorite drummer ever. 3. if your gonna call me a "fucking asshole" cause u thought that i dont like daves playing then i must needs inquire of you,how in the world are you so self-conscious? your insecurity is almost palpable!!!!! go dig a hole, pull out your self worth and confidence, clean it off, and have a good day

  • lol u wasted a lot of time typing that dude :P

  • lol u wasted a lot of time typing me back

  • Crazy stuff! He's hecka good!

  • the best for me!!!!!

  • He is the BEST man !!!!

  • all idiots..he is great!

  • Isn't Back to Basic is a The Next Step DVD.

  • he is so awesome and every thing in his kit sounds amazing except for the bass drum

  • Comment removed

  • Well it is obviously all because of the dampening inside the drum. They just liked to have it like that back then.

  • Haha thats what i thought! it sounds like he's hitting a thing of rubber against a cement wall lol

  • dave weckl is the sh*t! i love watching his solos on video. i saw his clinic in dallas in dec 2003. its even more badass when you see him live.

  • Dave has what we see lacking in other good drummers. (other drummers will know what I am referring to)

  • A mullet?!?!

LOL I know what you mean.

  • haha, he definatly was not alone in the mullet mania

  • This guy is awesome! = Esse cara é fóda!

    hiauhaiuhaiuhaiha

  • its not really a rudiment at all twjewett. i think hes just filling in the rest of a triplet with the left hand. rll rll rll rll... basically, but just quite fast.

  • but... it's all PERFECT!!!

  • That's one beast of a ride

  • am i flying or those sticks are huge :S

  • Now that is why I am a fan of Dave Weckl!

  • Can anyone please tell me what rudiment he's playing practically throughout which is making the snare sound like a roll the whole time.

  • dave is the man

  • a god at work...

  • the yamaha recording custom set is my favourite of all the drum kits. He's got amazing talents and amazing drum tricks, and also his concerts!!!!

  • jajaja joey jordison lo único que tiene es velocidad y agilidad en los pies, asi que no se puede comparar, weckl es superior en muchas cosas que realmente si son importantes, weckl mi master!!!!!

  • hahah i just know half the people who saw this cant read spanish and just saw joey jordison and automatically thought thi guy was a fag

  • haha thats fucking funny.

    DAVE WECKL IS GOD.

  • @chernamin jordison hijo de jordi castell? dave weck dave weco? jajaja

  • I pooped..

  • if i had a kit that sounded that good, I'd shit myself

  • I use both stick types. I find the light brown ones better for rolls over the toms from the snare. The Dark brown work for me better with ghost notes.

  • I love how Weckl's kit doesn't sound like a 80's kit

  • Bring the mullet back.

  • dave look like billy lee of double dragon.

  • This is the best drummer I have heard in my life and trust me I have seen and heard thousands !! God give you a long life, Dave, so you can continue to entertain us with your genius. The word 'awesome' is used a bit too freely nowadays but it suits you to a T. YOu turn a percurssion instruments into a musical instrument

  • The comment about turning the drums into a musical instrument is exactly the one I wanted to make!

  • if you guys like dave you should check out jojo mayer and nerve. I love dave wekl but i think jojo has better tecknique and a better groove

    just an opinion

  • nerve is pretty fucking sweet i will admit.

  • o my god! it's impossible!!! groove answone

  • It's awesome but not impossible. He's doing a lot of stuff in there which you would have to learn, practice and deal with one at a time. You can't just COPY this. The guy's brilliant but he likes sharing what he knows. To me, he is the best best in the world at the moment.

  • hella tight

  • holy crap. I guess this is old weckl before the moeller stuff. He's got that right hand at the very end of the stuck. Not near as "bouncy" as he plays now.

  • yep and he changed his stick design with the 'evolution'. shorter, and has a ball bearing in the butt end for counter balance. he also seems to have lost some pocket with this development. still a monster though no doubt.

  • I've actually been using the old stick design for 18 yrs., sadly, I've tried to wean myself off but I always go back. I think it's because the stick length and the way it's weighted. I switched for awhile doing the classic rock thing but I'm back now.

  • its still moeller son.

  • A bit too much reliance on bouncey double stroke rolls for my tastes, but impressive, nonetheless. Thanks for posting.

  • Multiplicity is one of the best jazz/fusion albums ever. If your a drummer you will probably love it!

  • FUCKING GREAT!!!

  • In a nut shell... to do "riffs" in between the 1 and 4 count.

  • Question what is loose phrasing I've been playin for a while but never heard of the term "loose phrasing".

  • well i quit.

  • The best of the best!

  • the phrasing is very tight yet free, i personally love it 5/5

  • This is amazing, but it almost seems to be a little TOO much for my taste. I think he could also leave a little bit more space, because the notes that AREN'T played are just as important to phrasing as the ones that are. But I don't know what I'm talking about.

  • necrodeathkiller, why don't you get a life, he is a natural legend of drumming, you can't deny it, it's a fact.

  • of course im joking, hehe

he is my actualy my favourite drummer and i have all of his albums. Listen to MULTIPLICITY. it is one of the best jazz/fusion or whatever albums ever(at least for me, of course).

  • It's weird to look back at this video and see the Zildjian 'K' logo on his hats to the right. Ah, the old days...I remember watching this VHS all the time.

It's also weird to remember the *severe* mullet Dave used to rock. I like his hair much better now, but yeah...when this was shot, it was obviously cool to live by the "business in the front, party in the back" mullet motto. ;)

  • hahaha no mames k marco pitruzzella ni k su puta madre ruego a dios k un dia se den cuenta de los verdaderos bateristas como dave weckl y n o en mamadas de marco pitruzzella

  • god i love the tone he gets man

  • ohhhhhhhh, so thats loose phrasing, thanx dave its so easy, i got it now...... SHITTTTTT

  • haha funny

  • Yeah! so it seems :DD

  • he obviously doesnt know how to play drums at all :)

  • Yeah, obviously. And I obviously do not know what sarcasm is.

  • no, i guess he just doesn't. i mean "obviously" anyone could do that, because "obviously" your being sarcastic, well i hope so because hes one of the greatest drummers alive today
