  • If anyone reading this hasn't already done so, I think you should have a go at listening to the album Heavy Weather by Weather Report, or at the very least, the song Teen Town.

  • Check out Shawn Lane on Google Plus

  • Fuck, I showed my GF this vid and she told me to start playing like this or she'll leave me.

  • @Lanoring That's rough buddy. Let us know how that turns out lol

  • C dorian....

  • 2:14: Di Meola lick. Romantic Warrior, 1976.

  • @mistarax Al DiMeola is one of my favorite guitarists on the planet. I love all the Return to Forever stuff from the 70s. Shawn was such an amazing guitar player, and I could just kick myself for not going to see him in concert before he passed away. At least I get to see live videos of him. RIP Shawn

  • Check out Shawn as a !6old wunderkind with Black oak Arkansas. Pure rock shredding

  • Shredding on a Les Paul. Nothing better.

  • Warsaw T_T? Geez I'm always mad becouse I didn't know this music then :/. Maybe that's better after all ^^...

  • man that is insane fusion guitar

  • see that everyone? No one is ever suppost to be this good!

  • LOVE! WHEN Shawn played a les paul! his ability with that sound!

  • I know Shawn Lane had his sound with his Westbury overdrive and Holmes amps, but DAMN Gibson + Soldano + Lane = awesome

  • I've seen A LOT of great players, some of them I consider to be the greatest of all time. But Shawn Lane was simply outrageous. Unquestionably blessed with a mind that far exceeds his own time.

  • Holy cow! Shawn had it all! The Guitar God!

  • You can find lots of Shawn's material on Bardo Records. I encourage everyone to email them via their website, requesting > "we want more Shawn Lane material" released.

  • Shawn Lane then = Tosin Abosi now

  • @ChristophGuitars22 I think Tosin Abasi in revolutionary in the progressive metal genre, but you can say he is mentally deranged and neurologically impaired if you him next to Shawn Lane, in terms of improvisation, technique and all-around music knowledge and playing.

  • why dont my les paul do that

  • Damn, Shawn's on fire hear here!

  • The most unbelievable human being to ever play guitar.

  • Buckethead was at this show! awesome!!

  • @speaker3600 I think he was in this same venue back in 1996, not 1998. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @LithuanianGuitar yeah, now that I look at it, your right. he was here with his band praxis 1996, not 1998, but its still cool to see both great guitarists playing at the same place haha

  • this kinda reminds me of guthrie govan in a way....

  • I love how they bust into some Weather Report near the end.

  • This man was insanely amazing. Of course, there will always be some brainwashed individual who will come along and say "He ain't as good as Hendrix" because that's what Rolling Stone magazine teaches us. Sorry folks. This man was way beyond anything we may ever hear again. He's like a HGH-injected cross between Holdsworth and Gambale.

  • Shawn Lane was very good at guitar.

  • @GNRslash28

    Now there's an understatement.

That's like saying Michael Jordan was very good at basketball.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn LMFAO.............That shits crazy, HE was the Michael jordan of guitar,

  • can't.... speak.... too..... EPIC.....

  • WOW

  • Shawn Lane is one of the best nobody can touch him not yingiwe or watever his fucking name is .. not patrucci , not herman lee , not bucket Head .. This dude is way untouchible

  • @oilkills I thought Paul Gilbert taught Buckethead.

  • @AuralOverdose he taught him for a year, but his main teacher was pebber brown and buckethead is very self-taught as well.

  • @Fluffypopcicle Now that I think about it, Paul is only two years older than Buckethead. I guess they had more of a long period of jam sessions. They definitely rubbed off on each other a lot though.

  • If anyone wants to see the video of Jonas Hellborg's bass solo right before this happens, search "Jonas Hellborg Fretless Solo"

  • lol 1:05 Jonas Hellborg is strollin off to the side

  • should be more known..

  • Shawn Lane? Naw... thats Herbie Herbert!!!!! Now HE can shred!!!! Haa ha

  • one of my 3 all time favorite guitarists, shaw lane, guthrie govan, and brrian setzer

  • Whoa shawn is southern? thats cool =D

  • at like 3:40 with the bass, reminds me of rush fer some reason lol

  • @quintin318 sounds like YYZ ;)

  • Really cool drummer! x) (btw)

    Beside Lane! He's awesome! Hehe

  • @slackmaster2000

    Guthrie Govan

  • Cool, into Black market! Holy tightness!!

  • yeah i have , but thats more of a jazz thing , im trying to find like jazz blues stuff , seems like its very hard to find , been looking a great deal but i cant find much.

  • the first minute and a half of this is very nice , that kinda blues jazz legato stuff , does anyone knows where i can find more of that ? some guitarist that does that kind of stuff ? .

  • @89fenderplayer have u checked out Allan Holdsworth?

  • bullshit buckethead is NOT a metal guitarrist....hes so everywhere that u cant label his music.

  • @tmh1717

you took the words right out of my mouth. he isn't just one genre he is over 10 and that's not an exaggeration lol. he does play metal though. imo shawn and buckethead are the 2 greatest guitarists to ever live. shawn for his unsurpassed melody, improvisation technique, and technical ability and buckethead for his versatility, creativity, and originality.

  • @Fluffypopcicle

Buckethead is no where near half as talented as Shawn was.

He needs to take of that damn mask already, it's a joke.

  • @tmh1717 Buckethead's labeled under avant-garde.

  • @tmh1717 yes he is everywhere and he is so good jazz improviser he is just the best" Ironic mode off! It's very easy to be "everywhere" without a modal chord progression numnuts.

  • @tmh1717 but he's still a good musician, you know why? because one of his influences is Mr. Shawn Lane.

  • Shawn Lane is amazing, he has some of the best instrumentals there are. Sure he gets a bit technical often, if you can do it all why not?

  • Technically amazing. But when he goes into hyper-speed, like from about 1:40 to about 2:40, both phrasing and articulation go right out the window. After about 10 seconds, it's just mono-noise tht goes in one ear and out the other. Allan Holdsworth, who also is technically brilliant, does the same thing alot, too.

  • Personally I'd blame that on the distortion more than anything. Had he kept the original clean tone he was using prior I think it would've sounded a lot better.

  • I think you're completely wrong about both players; it's incredibly musical, but he's expressing more abstract ideas, and playing them so fast that it's hard to hear-which some people always hear as "unmusical". What you call "mono-noise" is just an expression of the limits of your ability to follow the contours of his lines. The fault is not with the player-there's no problem with his phrasing or articulation-it's just hard to keep up.

  • I think your comments are among the most intelligent here...............Not to mention your exactly correct. Its like telling a man speaking Japanese that he doesnt know what hes talking about, when its simply YOU that have failed to learn the language

  • It becomes nonsense to "YOU" I find some people just dont understand more advanced musical phrasing, just as with people who dont understand math equations that make perfect sense to other people, some have a limited ability to understand such things, its really that simple, when your brain gets a little worn out from listening to this "mono-noise" you can go back to Britany Spears for a while and take a break......your brain and its primitive limitations can now enjoy another 5 min of Mr Lane

  • I called Shawn Lane "technically amazing", but didn't like a section of his solo where he goes into mono-noise hyper-speed, and from this, you conclude that I'm a Britney Spears fan. You're a complete idiot.

  • OK, Maybe I was a little harsh, I have another solution since the Britany Spears thing didnt go over to well for you, grab some Art Tatum, Oscar peterson and then some john coltrane, listen to that back to back for three days then watch this video again and like magic........you will see it all makes perfect sense. Oh yeah the last thing,......LET GO of all pre-concieved notions of how music is supposed to sound and just enjoy it for what it is, and you will see the world for what it is........

  • @vetmusician

    well said

  • You'd be hard pressed to find a more talented and technically superior guitar player than Shawn Lane. If you like Lane check our Guthrie Govan. He's just as good(hard to believe) and he plays just about every style in the book.

  • Fuck yes. You have good taste my man.

  • WOOOWW!!! TEEN TOWN!!!

  • dont even like this kind of music but damn that man can play!!!

  • why isn't he playing his vigier?

  • i was wondering that too notice what he's got behind him too? soldano slo 100 and 2 marshall 1960a cabinets between that and the guitar he probably had about $10,000 worth of gear for this gig

  • personaly i think he sounds a lot better with his "usual" rig thats why i had to ask.

  • oh i agree about the vigier but his lead tone is much more defined with the soldano and that's just quality of the amp cause he was playing holmes mississippi bluesmaster amps with a westbury overdrive and that's only about $500 worth of stuff compared to the $5000+ worth of amp he's got right there. If he had played his vigier in this i'd probably be very sad lol

  • Who's the drummer absolulty insane, I can't even believe anyone can even keep up with shawns shred

  • Tomas lang could keep up he's an Amazing Drummer

  • blues baby!

  • What is the theme that starts on 3:35???

  • That is "Teen Town" by 'Weather Report'.

Shawn and Jonas used to always play a medley of "Teen Town" and "Black Market" mixed together.

  • @petar870602 That's Teen Town by Weather Report.

  • This is one bad dude. Fast as hell with pentatonics, sextuplets, bebop lines, legato, hybrid picking, and just about everything else you could think of.

  • Zyping9966, I am sorry to tell you this, but Shawn left this mortal plane about 5 years ago. Thanks to his family and fans, we have dozens of videos to remember him by. A kinder soul you could never meet. All of us who knew him will miss him till the other side.

  • @geoffhazard

also we have a completely awesome guitar, wich i own:D

  • Shawn lane is amazing. i wish i could meet him. he is so fabulous

  • ur wish is not granted! coz he's already dead!

    peace men!!!!!!!!

  • OMG one of the best solos i've heard! Such great phrasing! Awesome!

  • Fuckin hell Jesus...thats amazing!

  • Was this clip shot during annual Jazz Festivals in Warsaw ?

  • ok, if you look at the other songs from this set, like on the Jazz Days II video, @ about 6:15 or so, looks like Epiphone to me, and I always thought it was, but it is hard to see. Maybe someone with a clear DVD copy can help.

  • He is so amazing, what a great!

  • he is like duane allman mixed with buckethead

  • haha the drummer is working 12348237 times harder than shawn!

  • just listen to a master at work....ridiculous....awesome...

  • i have seen his videos .....never saw playing like Lane's guitar & drum solo video...or the sick lick video

  • really just as fast as Lane?

maybe he learned 3-4 licks from Lane

that doesnt mean he can play all from lane

  • soldano slo 100 + gibson les paul goldtop + jazzy setting + shawn lane = epic shred

  • Buckethead is shit. I don't care how big'a butt buddies people think they are, he's NOTHING compared to Shawn.

  • He is nothing compared to shwn but he still in's shit

  • this guy is pretty fucking good!!

  • The stuff at 2:42 is great

  • A les paul, soldano head and shawn lane.......WOW!!!

  • Jaco-teen town, woohoo

  • 1:41... a RIFF thru time and space:) LOL

  • Also, what is he doing at 0:32 - 0:35? Looks and sounds really cool.

  • Luv Shawn Lane XD First time I heard The Way It Has To Be, within the first 30 seconds, chills were running up and down my back! Been playin' guitar for 2 years, so I hate how some of my influences die before I even knew about them. Let the good ones live God!

  • If you are amazed by this then you would be really shocked if you saw what else he could do

  • Amazing ! T/y for posting this vid !

  • 1:52 - 2:10 sounds like BHs fingernubbing, only done with left hand haha :P crazy..

  • Yeah, Buckethead was inspired a lot by Shawn Lane. Buckethead is quoted as proclaiming Shawn Lane to be the greatest guitarist of all time. And this IS coming from Buckethead, the man of a thousand genres. Buckethead may surpass his idol in skill someday, but for now he'll have to live with being more diverse than Shawn Lane was.

  • I know he looked up to Shawn, but his finger nubbing is actually inspired from something else shawn did that was shown to him by Paul Gilbert.

Im a big BH fan, but I think theres gonna be a very long time before someone surpasses Shawns skills. R.I.P

  • i dont think its a matter of time....people like Allan Holdsworth,Shawn Lane,John mclaughlin or Frank Gambale will never be surpassed!

  • dear Youre Strange, "more diverse than shawn lane was"????????????????

there's a difference between playing many styles and playing many styles very well. BH WOULD BE THE FIRST TO BOW DOWN TO SHAWN LANE.

  • ...Um, sorry to burst your bubble, but Buckethead DOES play more styles than Shawn Lane did. And he plays them very well. If you read my entire comment, you'd see that I said Shawn Lane is better in skill, and that Buckethead himself thinks Shawn Lane is the greatest guitarist of all time. Buckethead just does more genres than Shawn Lane did.

  • i've got lotsa BH and i still disagree. but it's not worth arguing about.

  • Bull shit. Buckethead is a metal artist, Shawn Lane is a Jazz GOD

  • Buckethead isn't and never was a metal artist. I can give you over fifty songs of his that aren't metal, easily. Shawn Lane was a better jazz guitarist by far, but Buckethead is better at more genres. If you're even THINKING about replying to this, do a little more research into Buckethead first, or I'll know pretty much instantly of how little you know.

  • .. That's exactly what I said, talking about lane. Buckethead is Experimental Instrumntal Metal.

  • Actually check out Shawn Lane's hendrix covers. He plays blues and blues-rock much better than buckethead. Also, there is some footage of Shawn Lane in his teens playing some metal type stuff. He also has a classical style piece on the powers of ten album. Buckethead has no classical stuff, just rock, metal, and yes buckethead has a good deal of jazz and blues songs

  • doesnt buckethead play strictly blues though?

  • Haha no, Buckethead does much more than blues. Just read Buckethead's wikipedia article. He has a massive range of styles while I do admit that he ties them all together with his own somewhat predictable style and often uses repitition.

  • direct quote from paul gilbert almost all of the viruoso guitarists said shawn lane was unmatchable and he knew more about everything than anyone he studied butterflies the man was a genius he knew a lot and had a huge collection of music he stayed in his comfort zone which was mostly jazz based cause it allowed him to improvise and open up a can of kick ass playing everytime he picked up a guitar

  • shawn did more styles than buckethead and taught buckethead and bucketheads very style of playing is influenced directly as a result of lanes soloing buckethead is known for his 2 handed tapping skills shawn lane was known for his "blazing amazing phrasing"

  • Just for everyone's info, the type of steroid used to treat skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, etc., are corticosteroids, not anabolic steroids. They wouldn't add any speed or strength, or cause hair growth or whatever else the term "steroids" implies. It was more than likely a powerful cream he used, possibly even a pill if the psoriasis was that bad.

  • very interesting, from 2:42 till 2:52 he is playing his own loop without the help of electronics!

  • i will say this he is really really good ..... really good..... i just dont like the sound.... but when it comes to technique and skill he is really good

  • he is starting with clean sound then continues with full blown distortion, so which sound would you like to hear from him ?

  • Did Sean take steroids when he was playing guitar because I know he had to take steroids for a disease like Psoriasis i think he had. Iam wondering if steroids made him faster at guitar?

  • I'd say no, since he demostrated this agility during his teenage years with Black Oak Arkansas - assuming he wasn't taking roids then, which is unlikely.

  • "Lane had psoriasis his whole life and also suffered from psoriatic arthritis from the age of about 13, and required treatment with steroids".

    Thats all out of Wikipedia.

  • I don't think that he was taking steroids since that age, cause there are videos of him at 17 and 18 and he is very skinny. If he was taking steroids from that age, he would've been overweight since even before those ages i just mention. Maybe the article just said that he suffered form that disease since 13, but that later he treated the disease with steroids.

  • not likely, these steroids were most likely to reduce inflammation, not increase muscle mass or testosterone levels. however, if it made his hands a bit thinner, it might help with speed on the guitar.

  • It is, not "suppose" to be", sound waves that are perceived by ears that can appreciate their structure and art, Bubba.

  • Drillin'.

  • I listen to this repeatedly and never get tired of it. What a great trilogy of country style picking, blazing jazz-rock solo and guitar-bass tandem à la Weather Report.

I saw Shawn several times in Beale St bars in the '80's and early '90's and knew he was special, but only posthumously do I realize how brilliant he was!

  • f you don't listen carefully it can sound like mindless shredding that doesn't sound good but if you really listen, you will appreciate his genius. It seriously is one of the most incredible I have ever seen or heard

  • the "art tatum" of guitar !!

  • RIP Shawn Lane :'( You rocked! He is in heaven now with a perfect guitar and no illnesses

  • who is the drummer?

  • Gotta love the Weather Report at 3:38.

  • what amazes me is how clean is playing always is

  • amazing shawn lane just the best; the drummer must have had a serious hard time with the timing!!!! amazing!!

  • nice that he played here, too bad i didnt know about it ;((

  • o my god lespauls are the hardest guitars to solo on because of there thick properties and shawn lane just shreded it to pieces!!! shawn lane an unstopable force!! amazing

  • wow shawn is the best ,check here's a young guitarist warming up another unique upcoming guitar player

    all the best

  • No one on this planet can play like him. He's the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The greatest ever. The fast pentatonic tuns at 2:08 blow me away every time.

  • ok...I'm putting lighter fluid on all my music gear..especially the les paul...ok...yes...it's all burning now...the sweet sweet flames...aggghhh!!!..make the shredding stop!!..it's burning my soul!!!...

  • 2:07 blows my mind, I'm not even sure how a hand can move so swiftly

  • Holy shit at 2:07!!!

  • Weather report!That was a nice surprise

  • Incredible...

  • nie do kurwa wiary że grał w PL, szkoda że wtedy szczalem i srałem w majty.

  • the coltrane of the guitar

  • I cannot believe his ability to constantly express ingenious musical ideas in his playing. If you don't listen carefully it can sound like mindless shredding that doesn't sound good but if you really listen, you will appreciate his genius. It seriously is one of the most incredible I have ever seen or heard

  • This man plays exactly how I wish I could. I just can't get over Shawn Lane, or the fact that he remains so unfairly obscure.

  • awsome stuff

  • You can find lots of Shawn's material on Bardo Records. I encourage everyone to email them via their website, requesting > "we want more Shawn Lane material" released.

    Comment on this video

  • Scary things start happening at 1:40

  • Jesus, you're right.

  • So is that the Jonas Hellborg signature dance, Mattias IA Eklundh was talking about in his blog? lol

  • VERY lol!! Sort of like a penguin !!

  • Ahahahah! He looks quite jocular there. =D

  • That is a gnarely tone heh.

  • check out all the Shawn you can. One of the greats of all time.

  • Awesomeness. I love how they play Jaco's bass part from another tune altogether towards the end.

  • oh my fucking god, this is sick, to be honest Shanw's playing is not my favourite, but this intro is crucial, i have to hear it down cause, these are the best jazz licks i have ever heard. It is like a free bebop masterclass..im speachless

  • So sick to see Shawn Ripping it up on a Les Paul!
