No offense to supporters of this circuit but I built it and was thoroughly unimpressed. I suppose if you were to mod it for use as an active circuit in your guitar it's okay. As a pedal to drive your amp's dirty channel, look elsewhere. Transistor based circuits are popular because they're easier than op amps.
The DIY pedal world is full of designs that are a complete performance gamble. I finally designed my own around my amp and found what I needed and much much more........
From what i gather the whole point of it is to not colour your sound, which isn't necessarily what most people want, which is why the tube screamer is so popular, and the klon which is used as a clean booster by a lot of people.
Doesn't matter if you use transistors or op amps if you design your circuit properly.
@sinbindinchin IMO it's another overrated, under performing circuit. Everything is going to alter the wave forms coming out of your guitar so you either design your filters to keep it as intact as possible or do what the tube screamer does and give a honking midrange.
For me the circuit just lacks gain. I never found any use for it. My experience is a good pedal should provide 70-90% your gain while your amp distortion should never go passed 2-3.
this is the pedal that got started on the DIY effects,i love how it reacts with the picking and that perfect amount of gain that is just below overdrive
Cool video.
