Excellent thumb work there! I play a 10-string guitar and it's hard work keeping tracks of the bass strings so that they don't mess with the harmonics. Very nicely done by James.
im from chihuahua mexico, where there is the bigest sierra in the continent and this guy used to live there whit nothing but his instrument, thatswy hi have that inspiration, hi is realy in contact whit nature. hi always has this recosrder and record the indians tarahumaras, the wind, the animals and play along at the very moment u guys shut look for his work is amazing.
What you say is true. James lived as a tour guide in the outskirts of Mexico and loved it there. He even wrote a piece of music called "Desert Moon" which was inspired by his desert experiences.
I got a copy of these pieces as well as many others in 1996 from Philip. The whole collection in his own writing. He handed them to me over dinner. Personal notes written through out. Commenting on friends etc... "Bring the back tomorrow" he said trusting me to do so. I did. His originals were stolen many years later. I had an archive from that day. His trusting deed was repaid because I had the only copies in the world and still do. I treasure from an amazing person and composer. God Bless PR!!
James. You have put the soul in the music. Very expressive. I'm blown away. And I'm pretty jaded. Heard the best players in the world. You did Philip proud. Thanks for supporting his music.
I'm sure words cannot describe how this piece made me feel..... its breathtaking. absolutely beautiful, Its feels like every note hits deep in your soul... thank you for something so amazing
i've been playing classical guitar a few years now and i have never heard or seen a piece of music played with such passion and perfection. thank you for this
Your comment is nice to hear. I, too, was moved when I first heard James perform this piece. I eventually learned how to play it and it remains one of my favorite pieces. Sometimes music is the only thing that makes sense to me in this world and this piece is a good example of that music.
I'd comment to Tim Hall and James Kline that you both play this piece so well, If Phil needs more recognition outside the rarified air of those who know who he is already, your efforts help greatly. We all know that the public generally could use a boost to elevate standards of taste. My applause to both of you for your fine playing and the variety of work you play. Thanks for sharing it here. A cd of fine music continues to be a great gift idea for Christmas.
Brought tears to my eyes and I have played classical guitar since 7 years old. I thought I was becoming jaded. Wrong. I just needed something to move me. Wonderful.
It sounds beautiful Peter. Thanks for it. I must tell you that for about 15 years ago I heard for the first time the Arch guitar, played by Peter Blanchette, here in Amsterdam. I have 2 diskettes bought from him. Guitar sounds very nice
James is playing an 11 string guitar of his own design. It was made by a maker in England. Today James plays an 11 string by a maker in San Francisco named Alan Perlman, and he has added a number of "harp" strings to it. Check out Alchemer's Song. - tim
This music is not published but I have it and I am putting it out there to help with Philip Rosheger's financial situation. If you get to me your emaail address I will forward the music with instructions on how to directly compensate Philip.
impossible not to be moved. Comments by DavidGuitar sum it all up perfectly. Simply beautiful. Does anyone know where can i find the sheet music for this?
What a spiritual journey this is. Timing, inflection, tone and balance are so expressive and telling. This piece is one of the most tender and beautiful things to be played on guitar I've heard since some of the slow movements of Bach or Barrios. Bravo timhguitar for posting it!
Preciosa canción de Rosheger que yo conocía por el disco Troubadour's Odyssey y gran interpretación de Jaime que nos brinda con la sonoridad de su guitarra de once cuerdas. Gracias Jaime.
Thank you for your comments. It seems as if most folks like hearing Serenade upon the first listening. I've suggested to Christopher Parkening that the Serenade would make a good encore piece at the end of a concert.
No, this is not "A Song to Wake By," as far as I know.James Kline made "Serenade" more memorable with his rendition. I've given copies of the 6 string version (Jame's rendition)to both Chris Parkening and John Williams, hoping they would perform it. This is unpublished, and I was given a sketch of it by James... how he performs it.I transcribed it back onto a 6-string guitar. I'll post the 6 string version of Jame's rendition when I have time.
The piece, as I know it, is owned by Serious Music and they have not replied to me. I met someone from Mel Bay publishing and they wanted to publish it but they (nor I) could not contact Serious Music. So it remains unpublished.
Parkening ha sucked for a long time; he could pick from the world's music and really do great but he does not really care...he's rich and famous playing with crap like Josh Groban while lesser known guitarists continue with great works. I'd rather see Kline than him and Rosheger used to come to my studio and sit and play for hours...so who needs Parkening?
One of my favorite pieces played so beautifully by one of my favorite musicians. That is an unbeatable combination! Bravo, Jaime! Bravo! and... how about an encore?
James Kline is a very special and gifted musician. I was fortunate to be there when James and Philip played their music at a party several years ago. This recording is very clear, but nothing beats a live performance. It is a little different every time one performs it.
Thanks for posting! Jim is one of my favorites - both his musicianship, and his instrument; though extremely quiet acoustically, the tight, clear, punchy tone of it (recorded) actually sounds more alive and vibrant (with so much more character) than a standard classical to my ears. I stock most of his Arch-Guitar CDs at Harp Guitar Music.
I was at this recital.Brings back memories!
