Pure city population, Columbus is biggest - but look at metro area and you'll know why Cleveland & Cincinnati have (bad) NFL and MLB franchises and Columbus doesn't. Cleveland (and Cincinnati) are both a lot bigger than Columbus. Cleveland is 16th in the US with 2.9M, Cincy 21st with 2.2M and Columbus 24th with 2.0 Million

Interesting footage but can't stand the modern ESPN music. It's provides such an artificial modern day atmosphere to sports nowadays....I say bring back the organ.
I wonder if Hockey Night in Canada has any Habs-Seals or Habs-Barons games in their archives. ESPN Classic seems to show the same classic games over and over. Why not special items like Seals/Barons/Scouts games or 1970s maskless goalie nights, etc?
@icm1970 Holy crap, dude, just to think there was a Seals-Scouts game in the NHL blows my mind. Although they eventually met in the 2000 Cup finals. In spirit, anyway.
Actually, they were very weak but had a few good young players besides Maruk. Wayne Merrick, who played for years with the Islanders was on this team. He, Maruk and Bob Murdoch made up the "3-M line." Gilles Meloche went on to be a decent goaltender. But overall they were really bad, and the empty seats didn't help! Amazingly, they beat the Habs the next year 2-1. Last Mtl. loss in Ohio until 2008 vs. Jackets!
Montreal can give a lot of their credit to owning all the Quebec rights to players ,imagine if that was still in effect with lemieux, bossy etc suiting up for the Montreal team...
yahuzs, you're absolutely right! Richfield Coliseum had about 20 000 seats but filled in about 5000 fans on a regular basis for the reason that you stated: the arena was too far away from Cleveland. If Richfield Coliseum was built in downtown Cleveland, then the Barons would have most likely stayed in Cleveland instead of merging with the Minnesota North Stars a couple of years later.
They eventually built the Gund(now Quicken Loans) Arena in Downtown Cleveland. If only they did that at the beginning, a downtown arena... they would still be the Cleveland Barons to this day.
Who knows? Maybe oone of these struggling teams may end up being brought in after all... hockey in Cleveland again, and some new competition for the Blue Jackets, Penguins, Sabres, Red Wings, and Maple Leafs! Imagine the Q's crowds for games with THESE teams!
And don't leave out the Black Hawks in this mix, either.
Cleveland: Right at the junction of major transcon highways, and anywhere from 2 to 7 hours driving for these teams... Q crowds full, half rooting for the Barons and half for the other team... hotels full... restaurants full.
That struggling team may be the Blue Jackets. I hear they lose money in Columbus like there's no tomorrow. Even though Columbus may be more populated than Cleveland now, I still regard Cleveland as more major league than Columbus, which will always be known as College Football country with the Buckeyes.
Is Columbus more populated than Cleveland? I'm not from Ohio so hopefully someone can tell me.
@Habsfan0206 and don't forget that the two seasons the Barons were in Richfield were two of the worst winters in northeast ohio's history. as well as the fact that the NBA team had just come to life for the first time in its existence and they got heavy media attention. They set the area on fire. Maybe some day. Meanwhile, at least a few of us have memories of seeing this great Habs team, the strengthening Islanders and the rest of the NHL for two years. We'll never forget it.
This was played during the ERA of the last Montreal Dynasty, when the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup 4 straight years from 1976-1979.
And then, the following year, the New York Islanders won 4 staright Stanley Cups of their own from 1980-1983.
But, as a Bruin Fan, losing to these Canadiens was classic, especially the one time when Boston Bruin Stan Jonathan pummeled Montreal Canadien Pierre Bouchard in a Fight in the 1978 Stanley Cup Finals. That is what I'll never forget about the Finals.
This game was actually played in the '77-'78 season. Giveaway: the white numbers in the red shoulder yokes on the Barons' jerseys. Previous year, they used "Ohio" silhouette patches for the numbers. They dropped the "Ohios" the next year, probably to cut costs.
I firmly believe that the 76-77 habs were the best club team in the world at that time - even better than Red Army (which was basically a national team disguised as a club team)
This is the first video footage I have ever seen of the Cleveland Barons (Nice touch with the modern ESPN music). It is obvious that you have a very rare and extensive collection of hockey videos.
Look at that hit at 8:23!

One year later on November 23, 1977 the Barons beat the Habs 2-1 in Cleveland. It was one of only 10 games Montreal lost that year.

My dad took me to this game - I was 13.
We lost 0-8 or 1-8 but I recall 0-8.
I had fun though :) I miss the NHL in CLE.

I agree with you, It is always the same classic games over and over on ESPN, time for something new with the Cleveland Barons or Kansas City Scouts.

A shortened version of one of their nicknames, Les Habitants

Lots of empty seats!
I truly hate the Habs, but I have to agree the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens were the best team I've ever seen.

Richfield Coliseum. Too far away + bad team = Empty seats

It's weird, but I didn't see one goal scored on this whole clip.
So I looked it up, and Les Canadiens won the game, 8-1, en route to a final record of 60-8-12, the best season mark in history!

That's fantastic...
Pretty historic stuff, was even able to recognize Lafleur on the point at 2:46.
The Barons got worked by one of the best-assembled teams of all time.
