bantumwt - What's radical about what American Atheists does? They speak out, they organize pickets, conventions and parties for Atheists. They sometimes file lawsuits to try to get religion out of government, or off of someone's back. They don't use violence or advocate it, and never have.
I think terms like "radical" and "war" and "attack" are way over-used in the context of social disagreements in the US of A. We oppose, speak out, avoid, and litigate. All of that is legal and safe.

AA's main things are state/church separation and liberty for non-religious people. I don't know how you got confused on that.

One reason I'm glad I no longer live in America. In Australia, New Zealand, the Uk, most of western Europe religion is barely even discussed during election campaigns. Agnostic and Atheist prime ministers have been elected in these countries as far back as the 40's. Why is such a big deal in the US? Because the Christian right has too much power. This isn't all Christians but a signicant power base that infringes upon people's freedom "from" religion. Good luck in your campaign.
I currently live in the UK but I'm from Australia originally. Did part of my High School in the US in 79. San Diego. I didn't think it ws so bad then. I think the Christian right there really started to get a power base in the 80's. And it just grew stronger. Hopefully a dose of Sarah Palin may have at least temporarily cured your country.

Yahweh, Allah, Zesus, they're all God, they just have different images. This is something atheists use to reinforce there atheism. Every culture has an idea of what God looks like or how God behaves. We refer to God as Him but its just humanization of God, we can't help it. God is such a general term, there is not a single shred of proof God exists, so people will continue to assume God is like this or like that. Christians believe in a God that is basically insane and murders millions, yet they call hum just. But in the end, its God, his behavior and attitude has change, but God is still all loving, all powerful and whatever.. That God is the same but THEIR ideas of him have changed. People who grow up in submissive cultures will have a different view of God.

Your right comfort doesn't equal truth. Now i'm not saying there is a God but i'm not denying it either. Yes people are afraid to die, a majority of people fear death so they look to God, but atheists/agnostics fear death as well. One of the main reasons i think people truly believe God exists is because of love, its powerful, everyone quenches for it, we need acceptance. Religion has plauged us since the dawn of humanity. Some ancient beliefs seem silly to us now just because it's so obvious they are now. You want to use logic to explain the universe but you say the brain is hardwired to ask questions. I can say we're hardwired to explain absolutely everything because it gives sense to the brain, we're just hard-wired to be that way. Hardwired to say that we must understand everything. We are hardwired to answer questions, we're curious we want to know how things work. If we just sit here and do nothing we become lethargic and depressed, the universe saves us because its so big and we have yet to grasp everything about it. There could be things out there we haven't even imagined yet. To base a belief just on a tiny planet is not smart.
There are many people who sit around but dont become depressed (depression is a mental illness that dosen't require lazyness). The universe doesn't 'save us' it just is. Also, to so say that without a brain there is absolutely nothing, makes no sense. Your perception of the world is created by the energy (light, sound wave, ect) that the sensory systems of you body take it. Without an external source of energy you wouldn't perceive anything (unless you were hallucinating or dreaming).
Also, I don't claim to know the truth about anything. The things I know today maybe shot down tomorrow (as many of my beliefs have been). THere is a big difference in saying 'I KNOW that there is no God', and saying 'I don't SEE the evidence for him'.

That's faith because others do see evidence for such a being. If God exists its a faith. Some people have near death experiences. Atheists say its a hallucination. But how do we know that, we didn't experience it, i would simply say, "I don't know." There are many laws that differentiate from culture to culture. The death penalty is rare in European countries but here its common. God changes from culture to culture. God remains the same; all-loving, all-powerful etc... There may be many Gods in the world but its through perception of an indian or christian. They have different ideas of what God may be like. The humanization of God will not remain as one, it has to vary b/c we're human. If there is a God does it matter how many there are?

There is a difference between an atheist and a religious person. The religious person is someone who believes in God because of faith (regardless of the evidence). I don't believe in God because I thought about the issue for a long time and came to the conclusion that I don't see evidence for God. As far as knowing what reality is we can use science to understand it. And the more we know the less we need God in the explaining.

Its arrogant to say the reality we see is the true one and all animals live in our reality. Reality varies from being to being. How do you know what real is, we're slaves to our brains.
Our brains filter reality. THink of it this way: a fish must live in my reality because I can catch it with my fishing rod. If a fish lived in another reality how could I interact with it. Bees see in a frequency of light that I cant. Thats because it can percieve light that I cant (my visual system isnt 'tuned' to it). However, we still see using the 'same' electro magnetic spectrum, we are just tuned to different parts of it because of evolution.
You are a slave to your brain. If the brain is gone so is reality. So there is no you. In fact reality doesn't exist unless there is a brain. A bee can't determine whether a universe exists due to its brain chemistry, so a bee could say no the universe does not exist. But humans act as if they're superior. How do we know there isn't something out there beyond our logic and perception. We don't know, that's what agnosticism is all about.
TO say that reality doesn't exist without your brian make no sense. Its better to say that your brain filters the outside world in a way that only makes you aware of certain part of 'reality'. I can't see, hear, feel radio waves. As far as my immedeate percetion is concerned they don't exist. However, I know they exist through reading about them the using the technology that uses them (cell phones, radio, ect).
Without a brain there's absolutely nothing. You believe this is reality because you're here, you believe cancer exists because your brain makes sense of it, who are we to say this isn't an illusion. Our brain owns us, we submit to it. Your thinking of reality in terms of the universe being here in terms of perception through your brain. But how do you know its true? Its all in your head, everything is. If God exists science may not apply to this being, therefore we can't detect him.
You seem to be stuck in the 'Mentalism' approach however nobody (philosophers or scientists) takes that (your) idea seriously anymore. As for your example of cancer, sorry that doesn't make any sense. Think of it this way: A long time ago when people didn't know about cancer (tumors) the disease still existed. I mean these people had no idea of cancer, it didn't exist for them. By your logic it would not be part of their 'reality'. However, the disease still killed them non the less.
I'm not talking about mentalism such as precognition or mind control. We honestly don't know if the world we live in is real, of course i wouldn't drive myself crazy over it, but we really can't say for 100% certainty. If i die and it turns out i still exist then there's a serious problem with science and the reality you might tend to regard as "real". We shouldn't exist after we die. Its biologically impossible but if it happens it is defying science. This is why i can't trust either sides.
Think of it this way: 'reality' is filtered through you sensory systems. ALso, mentalism as nothing to do with precognition or mind control, it was an old philosophy that stated that only the mind is real (reality only exists in ones mind) however nobody takes that serioulsy anymore. The brain doesn't creat your reality (unless your hallucinating), it trys to creat a simulation of the 'real' world through the info it gets from your senses (eyes,ears,touch, ect). YOu need to understand that.
Well the mentalism you talk of is in philosophical terms. This simulation is in your mind. Your pattern of thinking is this is real, you honestly believe it, did you ever have a dream that you thought was "real"? Ever notice that you can't catch yourself dreaming in a dream? You may not take this seriously but many still do, and write books about this subject. Listen to the comment you made, "the brain creates the simulation", an indifferent universe seems pretty creative for a non-creator.
As I've said before it's human nature to see evidence of design. The human brain has 'software' that is hard wired and also learned to make sense of the world (called heuristics). THe very notion of a creator maybe a manifestation of the mind. Also, the reason why "you can't catch yourself dreaming in a dream", or the reasons why dreams can make no sense is because certain parts of the brain are 'turned off' during sleep. There is nothing magical about it.
Also, I believe that science, and do I dare say Atheism can be a good thing. Think of it this way: if people thought like atheists (this is the only life you are going to get, there is no afterlife) think of how that would change society. We might stop killing each other or stupid shit if we know that this is the only life you are going to get.

Yes but to push your own answer back on you: That doesn't make it true. If God is real, he doesn't leave evidence possibly so we would live our lives true maybe your falling right into his hands. Evil gives us lessons in life with or without God. If you want the world to be rosy and nice your not going to learn anything, you'll be a self-centered person who doesn't understand suffering.
Also, I don't believe in 'evil' in the religious sense. The term evil is what we give to certain aspects of human nature that we don't like. For example, there are people called 'Psycopaths'. These people don't feel pity, shame,guilt or empathy for others. YOu could say that they are the epitome of evil. However, their behaviour can be traced to certian brain areas that are malfunctioning. The term evil was made up, a scapegoat (the devil) to explain behaviours most people find abhorrent.
One more thing.One of the things that science has told me is that I am part of the universe.Every atom that constitutes every molecule that makes up everything in the universe(including the Earth,rocks,you and me,and ever aliens, if they exist)all come from stars(suns).As Carl Sagan said:"We are all star stuff".Knowing this makes me realize that not only do I live in the universe I'm part of it and it a part of me.What a wonderful cohesive nothing,and what a shame that so few understand it...

Ellen, I agree politicians should acknowledge that secular Americans exist and court our vote as well. Also, I agree that politicians should take their oaths swearing on the Constitution not on a holy book. I have always thought it was disrespectful when politicians do take the oath on the Bible, because their first job is to defend the Constitution, and not to some dictator in the sky.

While I understand the position, I don't think not voting is the most appropriate solution. The election will still have a winner even if 30 people in the whole nation vote, and that winner will likely continue on like it's always's been (without our vote it just might be McCain...gulp). We need to be more vocal, get into public offices ourselves, and work to reduce the distrust the majority have towards atheists.

bantumwt - What's radical about what American Atheists does? They speak out, they organize pickets, conventions and parties for Atheists. They sometimes file lawsuits to try to get religion out of government, or off of someone's back. They don't use violence or advocate it, and never have.
I think terms like "radical" and "war" and "attack" are way over-used in the context of social disagreements in the US of A. We oppose, speak out, avoid, and litigate. All of that is legal and safe.

One reason I'm glad I no longer live in America. In Australia, New Zealand, the Uk, most of western Europe religion is barely even discussed during election campaigns. Agnostic and Atheist prime ministers have been elected in these countries as far back as the 40's. Why is such a big deal in the US? Because the Christian right has too much power. This isn't all Christians but a signicant power base that infringes upon people's freedom "from" religion. Good luck in your campaign.

I currently live in the UK but I'm from Australia originally. Did part of my High School in the US in 79. San Diego. I didn't think it ws so bad then. I think the Christian right there really started to get a power base in the 80's. And it just grew stronger. Hopefully a dose of Sarah Palin may have at least temporarily cured your country.

Yahweh, Allah, Zesus, they're all God, they just have different images. This is something atheists use to reinforce there atheism. Every culture has an idea of what God looks like or how God behaves. We refer to God as Him but its just humanization of God, we can't help it. If God truly is real, God is going to be someone who can think in multiple dimensions, eons smarter than you or i will ever be. God is such a general term, there is not a single shred of proof God exists, so people will continue to assume God is like this or like that. Christians believe in a God that is basically insane and murders millions, yet they call hum just. As you know I don't believe in GOd. Let me ask you this: why do you need to entertain the possibility of God? I beleive that many people believe in GOd because of fear. Not just the fear of God being angry over not worshiping him, but fear of death itself. I mean what a wonderful idea it is to believe that death isn't the end , and that you'll see all of the people you loved once again. Who wouldn't want to believe that. HOwever, beliefs may be comforting but that doesn't make them true...

Your right comfort doesn't equal truth. Now i'm not saying there is a God but i'm not denying it either. Yes people are afraid to die, a majority of people fear death so they look to God, but atheists/agnostics fear death as well. One of the main reasons i think people truly believe God exists is because of love, its powerful, everyone quenches for it, we need acceptance. God would be that home plate for humans and animals, that source to return to, to cessate that desire and complete it.

Religion has plauged us since the dawn of humanity. Some ancient beliefs seem silly to us now just because it's so obvious they are now. But to fully embrace our current obssesion with religion based on a doc forced down our throats by initially the Catholic 'fathers' is no better. There is not any key to truth here. No one has this supposed key, not even science. We are still learning and trying to learn more about life daily. Religion doesn't hold that answer no matter its belief in its dogma.

Again it is human nature to see purposeful design. we are hard wired for it. Look at quantum mechanics, there are things happening in the quantum world that make no sense. And our brains just can't get an intuitive grip on it. BUt it still happens. Same goes for the need for a creator. Why can't the univere exist for the sake of existence. Why does it need a creator?

If existence is truly purposeless then how is there a why in the first place. How is it that humans whom are obsessed with purpose are created? We should be like robots. There's absolutley no reason for the consciousness to exist. I hate when atheists use this excuse because its a lazy one. The reason we ask "why" is because it is human nature to do so (the brain is hardwired to creat the appearence of cause and effect relationships). We are like robots, just look at the human brain. As for near death experiences that is probably related to the brain as it is 'shuting down'. Also, what is the difference between a near death experience and an hallucination? You want to use logic to explain the universe but you say the brain is hardwired to ask questions. I can say we're hardwired to explain absolutely everything because it gives sense to the brain, we're just hard-wired to be that way. Hardwired to say that we must understand everything. It may not even be true, our brains just accept as true. I at one time thought NDE's were just biologically induced but i'm not sure anymore after speaking to someone who had one.

If we just sit here and do nothing we become lethargic and depressed, the universe saves us because its so big and we have yet to grasp everything about it. There could be things out there we haven't even imagined yet. To base a belief just on a tiny planet is not smart.

There are many people who sit around but dont become depressed (depression is a mental illness that dosen't require lazyness). The universe doesn't 'save us' it just is. Also, to so say that without a brain there is absolutely nothing, makes no sense. Your perception of the world is created by the energy (light, sound wave, ect) that the sensory systems of you body take it. Without an external source of energy you wouldn't perceive anything (unless you were hallucinating or dreaming).

That's faith because others do see evidence for such a being. If God exists its a faith. Some people have near death experiences. Atheists say its a hallucination. But how do we know that, we didn't experience it, i would simply say, "I don't know." There's holes in the biology of explaining the NDE's yet atheists look over them, seems like psuedo-skepticism to me.

"debunk" is word I wouldn't use. We understand the human brain (at least a little) we know that it creats our perception of the world. We know that some times things go wrong in the brain and we perceive things that arent there. Also the answer to the question do 'I believe in GOD' is based on evidence not faith. Atheists become atheists due to the evidence of science. Most scientists are atheists. Most atheists claim that NDE's are biological problems in the brain, if they don't then they're saying there is something behind this nde, it would be spiritual-like, that's not atheism.

Your rational is flawed. Staling, regardless of he was and athiest or not, did not do the things he did because of atheism. As I said there are no beliefs in atheism, its just a word that connotes a disbelief in God. If someone does something awful and happens to be an atheist that does not mean that atheism made them do it. If Stalin hated religion then that was his OWN belief. Its called militant atheism. Its happening in North Korea right now. Lenin even stated that communism begins with atheism. Not all atheists would do what Stalin did, but there is a burden of responsibility on atheism b/c it contributed to the deaths of millions due to his belief (rejection of God) even if he was nuts.

Also, you brought up the BIg Bang as an example of creation. However, modern Cosmology is showing that we may be one universe among many. Physics is showing that it's possible that the creation of black a hole creates another universe(if thats so then our universe was created by a black hole in another universe).Also, I really don't call myself an atheist I'm more of an extreme agnostic. There are many laws that differentiate from culture to culture. The death penalty is rare in European countries but here its common. God changes from culture to culture. God remains the same; all-loving, all-powerful etc... There may be many Gods in the world but its through perception of an indian or christian. They have different ideas of what God may be like. The humanization of God will not remain as one, it has to vary b/c we're human. If there is a God does it matter how many there are?

Yeah your right he is a prick, You can't get through to fundies. The God of the bible is not all loving, he's evil therefore he can't be God. God is all loving, that's the idea of perfection, someone who loves you even if you tell them you hate them. How can God be evil, even if he's all-powerful he can't be God if he's evil, its a flaw atleast in any sane persons mind. Christianity and religion is destroying the idea of God. Hey, did you check out 'quirks and quarks'? Also, and I'm sorry to keep disagreeing with you, but I don't believe that God must be loving, evil, or anything. Perfection has nothing to do with emotions, its just a state of zero error (what ever that means). The reason why humans feel love, hate, lust,ect is because of our more ancient parts of our brain called the 'limbic system' (below the cortex). Again, I think that your view of God is too anthropomorphic.

Yes but in the eyes of humans it is perfection. People will look at Hitler and say why did God allow that? Well what if God was indifferent, non-judgmental of us and non-human animals. He could still be loving just independent of either our side and Hitler's side of behavior. Humans feel love through chemical reactions, that's true but it doesn't seem to make sense in an uncaring, indifferent universe.

Yes you do not BELIEVE in God. How many times do i have to tell people it takes as much faith to be you as it does to be a theist. To say that the universe was through chance. Yes you have your evidence which explains how something came to be, but that in no way debunks God at all, in fact some theists use evolution and the big bang as probability for a God. I don't think you quite understand how big this universe is, you live on a tiny speck and but both sides claim to know everything.

There is a difference between an atheist and a religious person. The religious person is someone who believes in God because of faith (regardless of the evidence). I don't believe in God because I thought about the issue for a long time and came to the conclusion that I don't see evidence for God. As far as knowing what reality is we can use science to understand it. And the more we know the less we need God in the explaining.

Atheists don't claim 'to know everything'. Even Richard Dawkins says that. However, you have to ask yourself why you and so many other religious people get so angry at people like us. Most Atheits may debate your claims but thats about all. Look at the misery that religion has created through out history. The reality is signals interpreted through the brain, there is no true reality. Each species has different perception on what real is. Human believe that things must have been created is mostly do to the fallacy of the human brain.The brain is used to making the connection of 'if this exists it must have been created'. In terms of the universe atheists throw in the white towel and say it happened and there is no need to look into it any further. If the universe is infinite, why can't God be? Reality is all perception. A jellyfish doesn't live in the same reality you do b/c it lacks a brain. So you don't exist in his world. Our brains filter reality. THink of it this way: a fish must live in my reality because I can catch it with my fishing rod. If a fish lived in another reality how could I interact with it. Bees see in a frequency of light that I cant. Thats because it can percieve light that I cant (my visual system isnt 'tuned' to it). However, we still see using the 'same' electro magnetic spectrum, we are just tuned to different parts of it because of evolution.

You are a slave to your brain. If the brain is gone so is reality. So there is no you. In fact reality doesn't exist unless there is a brain. A bee can't determine whether a universe exists due to its brain chemistry, so a bee could say no the universe does not exist. But humans act as if they're superior. How do we know there isn't something out there beyond our logic and perception. We don't know, that's what agnosticism is all about.

I can't see, hear, feel radio waves. As far as my immedeate percetion is concerned they don't exist. Without a brain there's absolutely nothing. You believe this is reality because you're here, you believe cancer exists because your brain makes sense of it, who are we to say this isn't an illusion. Our brain owns us, we submit to it. Your thinking of reality in terms of the universe being here in terms of perception through your brain. But how do you know its true? Its all in your head, everything is. If God exists science may not apply to this being, therefore we can't detect him.

As for your example of cancer, sorry that doesn't make any sense. Think of it this way: A long time ago when people didn't know about cancer (tumors) the disease still existed. I mean these people had no idea of cancer, it didn't exist for them. By your logic it would not be part of their 'reality'. However, the disease still killed them non the less.

We honestly don't know if the world we live in is real, of course i wouldn't drive myself crazy over it, but we really can't say for 100% certainty. If i die and it turns out i still exist then there's a serious problem with science and the reality you might tend to regard as "real". We shouldn't exist after we die. Its biologically impossible but if it happens it is defying science. This is why i can't trust either sides.

Think of it this way: 'reality' is filtered through you sensory systems. ALso, mentalism as nothing to do with precognition or mind control, it was an old philosophy that stated that only the mind is real (reality only exists in ones mind) however nobody takes that serioulsy anymore. The brain doesn't creat your reality (unless your hallucinating), it trys to creat a simulation of the 'real' world through the info it gets from your senses (eyes,ears,touch, ect). YOu need to understand that.

Well the mentalism you talk of is in philosophical terms. This simulation is in your mind. Your pattern of thinking is this is real, you honestly believe it, did you ever have a dream that you thought was "real"? Ever notice that you can't catch yourself dreaming in a dream? As I've said before it's human nature to see evidence of design. The human brain has 'software' that is hard wired and also learned to make sense of the world (called heuristics). THe very notion of a creator maybe a manifestation of the mind. Also, the reason why "you can't catch yourself dreaming in a dream", or the reasons why dreams can make no sense is because certain parts of the brain are 'turned off' during sleep. There is nothing magical about it.

Also, I don't believe in 'evil' in the religious sense. The term evil is what we give to certain aspects of human nature that we don't like. For example, there are people called 'Psycopaths'. These people don't feel pity, shame,guilt or empathy for others. YOu could say that they are the epitome of evil. However, their behaviour can be traced to certian brain areas that are malfunctioning. The term evil was made up, a scapegoat (the devil) to explain behaviours most people find abhorrent.

Also, I agree that politicians should take their oaths swearing on the Constitution not on a holy book. I have always thought it was disrespectful when politicians do take the oath on the Bible, because their first job is to defend the Constitution, and not to some dictator in the sky.

While I understand the position, I don't think not voting is the most appropriate solution. The election will still have a winner even if 30 people in the whole nation vote, and that winner will likely continue on like it's always's been (without our vote it just might be McCain...gulp). We need to be more vocal, get into public offices ourselves, and work to reduce the distrust the majority have towards atheists.

Remember Atheists!!! NEVER SAY "atheists don't believe in GOD" instead, be CLEAR about you beliefs and SAY "atheists don't believe in the EXISTENCE of GOD" I, as an atheist believe in many "things" but because i don't believe in the existence of almost all definitions of god, does NOT mean , as you put it, that I "Believe in nothing".
Remember, atheists DON't "Believe in nothing" we simply don't believe in the existence of various concepts/and definitions of GOD. There is a distinction.
