The film has plenty going for it, but it is bogged down by so many plot errors and the emotionless blandness of Costner. It's got great action scenes and you really feel like you're in that world; but the errors, casting and dialogue cannot be ignored.

@Guigley shame because Costner can also be a great actor. Dragonfly was one of his greatest performances in my opinion) and the moving plot of the movie complimented it. Despite the fact that Waterworld is a terrible movie, its soundtrack is pretty wonderful though, I'm actually surprised because I didn't expect it to be quite beautiful (i.e. check out the song "swimming")

It's a shame this film was so panned. As apocalyptic sci-fi goes, this one is great, with a cool concept, and superb design. I think it may have done better without Costner, as the role doesn't really suit him in my opinion.

The most Under-rated movie of all time. One of the last species of movies of the Mad Max genre.

1995 was just a few years too late for this release to be considered a cult classic.

this reminds me of Blade Runner - because this movie also was a "flop" and became a classic after the Video/DVD release... Waterworld, BladeRunner and Congo are some great movies - fuck the critics

I like the tone of the James Newton Howard score it sets the theme up nicely in the film with an earthquake low end deep rumbling with narration explaining that the polar icecaps have melted flooding the earth!
