I have read quite a few books (cannot name one off the top of my head) and a vast majority of German Soldiers, especially those within the Wehrmacht condemned Nazi Hate crimes and the killing of civilians, especially Jews. There are instance of Generals being transferred from the Eastern Front due to them expressing their disgust at the murder of civilians and even men in the SS that refused to kill innocent people. @MrMogwa I strongly disagree. Mr Rudel risked his life several times, landing behind enemy lines in order to pick up stranded fellow luftwaffe pilots. That takes moral character. His morals were different than yours, but he was of very strong character. His post-war support of Mengele in no way diminishes his accomplishments, but makes him a complex, and mistaken, imperfect human. But still one of the greatest flyers and military fliers ever. He fell for the propaganda of his times.

He wrote a book in the early fifties about his WWII expierences. I believe the title is: Stuka Pilot It is a great read if you can get over the fact that he was a German pilot during WWII. The Russians had a 50,000 ruble bounty on his head. After the war he went to South America and remained a Nazi, until his death. His Knight's cross was taken by American soldiers when he delivered his aircraft to an allied airbase after the war. He was the most decorated German airman of the war.

My grandfather who flew Spitfires in the BOB often said a Stuka looked good - that is, when centered in his gunsight before he pushed the gun button and let eight .303's rip.

Before he was retired to instructing new RAF pilots in late 1944, he liked the cannon and increased power of the Spitfire variant of the time. A 109 or 190 didn't like being hit by high velocity Hispano 20mm cannon. A wing tended to come off.

Sure, he thought the world of Hitler and never doubted that the Bolsheviks was a threat to civilization (and in this he was right, I think). But since he was fighting with all his might non-stop, he never had any opportunity to get philosophical and scrutinize nazism. Besides, he wasn't an intellectual.
