The reason he sank in was because standing puts all his body weight and pressure in a concentrated area. Laying flat however will displace it enough so you remain buoyant. To your point of distance to the shore, are you being put in the quicksand by helicopter. If not you should be within feet of solid ground since you would usually walk into it.
