You guys are not old.... I was born in 1949 & that's me playing bass on this video. I had the pleasure of playing for Wilson for almost 5 years. He was truely one of the greatest entertainers. He ALWAYS gave his all!!! Unfortunately, like Wilson, several members of this band are no longer with us :(
@sixtiesrnb Your a lucky guy! I've never been to one of his concerts and can't imagine how good it must have felt to have actually played on stage with him. You must have some great memories! Respect to Wilson and you.
2:17 YouTube video: Wilson Pickett live performance of 1965 #1 R&B hit In the Midnight Hour; song by Pickett and Steve Cropper.
March 18, 1941: birth of Wilson Pickett, American singer (d. 2006); hits include "In the Midnight Hour" (which he co-wrote), "Land of 1,000 Dances," and "Mustang Sally." 1991 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
My fav vocalist of all time (there are some others too) - I just realized it today..this is the MAN I have been trying to find my whole life..now I know who..and he;s dead a couple years ago....sad , very, very, very sad...I wish someone knew just how much
@Tydinvienna Yeah... Somewhat. It depends on the angle. I think Eddie Murphy probably could do an EXCELLENT job acting as Wilson Pickett in Wilson's biography.
I was 22 when this legendary soul man released "Midnight Hour" 44 years ago back in 65 and the impact he and his great backing band ( brillant in their own right) made on me through my Transistor radio (groovy high quality sound) was to form a lasting emotional bond with the "be for real" soul sounds of Wilson, Sam & Dave, Otis, Rev Al Green and many more! And they still sound great through my Solid Gold Sixtys and seventys PA sound equipment!
@Morrypix You just summed up exactly how these same artists make me feel. It's really good to know that there's somebody else out there that REALLY gets it. Peace. : )
@Morrypix dang dude you're old. Love that you got it. hey I'm old too born in56, That old soul music is sampled to this day but the voices will never be matched. Do you like Sam Moore's "Over Night Sensation" ? it's old school with a modern production quality. Check it out.
In the original version, this song was the epitome of soul. It had the best bass guitar, bass lines ever. Played by Donald Duck Dunn. He played on almost all soul music songs. That's why soul music was so good. The Bass Guitar. Check out Knock on Wood by Eddie Floyd and listen to the bass.
What's the matter with you Wilson Pickett fans? There are a whole swath of his hits that are not posted including "FOR BETTER OR WORSE.", 'DON'T KNOCK MY LOVE", "TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR", "I'M A MAN AND A HALF", and many more! So, get with it YouTubers; We need another "Pickett's Charge", you dig?
Steven, you are a legend. I can't agree more. I am your typical rock-loving teenager, but soul music has absolutely captured me over the last year or so. I'm playing this song with my band currently. Amazing song, and I hope Afro American soul comes back. Rihanna, Chris Brown, that's not R and B.
I hate to be a dick but why can't it just be soul music. All the musicians at fame studios where Wilson recorded were white. I never get why people make this a race issues. It's all just amazing music.
I AGREE!!!... I think that it's unfortunate that you just don't see a lot of soul coming from mainstream white artist anymore like it did in the 50's 60's and even 70's... Pop culture has had a lil to do with that and all the real white soul singers and even black souls singers like the Wilson Pickett's ,the Van Morrison's and Billy Caldwell's are kinda lost in a generation that doesn't even know they exist... Did that make any sense at all?? I 'm hoping it came out the way I meant LOL!!!
You do make a lot of sense. I think what you are trying to write, & I agree, is that music has become so departmentalized (I'd say since the 1980's) for certain categories of people that there doesn't seem to be any true soul music & therefore true soul singers or artists left, both black & white or even other ethnicities. (I hope I understand that's the gist of what you are writing?)
Integrated. Some of the Fame Studios musicians probably were black. I'm not an expert but I doubt they were 100% white. Not that it matters. Stax/Volt was itself a model of integration, and so were Booker T. and the MG's, the band that helped (through the white Steve Cropper) make this song's groove.
dogkelp You got that right. "STEVE CROPPER" wrote or co-wrote many many SOUL HITS. Way back there I'd be "ON THE AIR" record would be spinnin' I'd see the name CROPPER under the TITLE and I's think to myself,,this guys gotta be black. WHO KNEW ?
I'm the bass player's son. Thank you so much for putting this online. I'm actually a voice major and I've been singing this kind of music with my R&B Ensemble at UMiami. Check out our stuff on my YouTube profile. I hope R&B makes a strong comeback. This is when music was music!!
That is so cool! A am a real white girl, but I've always loved my soul and R&B! Just heard this song in the movie "American Gangster" and had to hear Wilson play it again. I remember him from the old days. Good luck to you Steven in your career!
Liking this is a massive understatement

No. The guitar player was Jimmy "Liston" Owens. I had the pleasure of working with him for several years back in the late 60's & early 70's.

According to Rolling Stone, Bob Dylan is a better singer than Mr. Pickett up there. I will now light myself on fire.
