@BoxerLife5150 Dutch might be, doesn't mean Flemish is. I've noticed that a lot of you think Flemish sounds really gutteral which it really doesn't, that's mostly a Dutch trait. You might want to have a look at my Flemish/Vlaams playlist before outing yourself as just another language fascist who was raised to dislike the Flemish people in Belgium. And FYI, many Bruxellois are descendents of Flemings who were forced to speak French or be considered 2nd class citizenry in their own country.

Dutch => Flemish => Flemish dialects (like in Gent, Antwerp...) but we still can understand each other of course). I live in Gent and I don't speak dialect :), just normal 'Flemish'.

Flemish is almost the same as Dutch. Sometimes we (Flemings) use some other words, other sense constructions. Flemish also sounds different than Dutch. You can say Flemish is a 'dialect' spoken in 5 Belgian provines (the Flanders region) and Flemish has also it's own dialects. I think you have that everywhere in the world :):

Well this is debatable sir if you call Flemish an accent then what is Africans a language or just another accent or like the Scandinavian language tree they can understand each other but still there is a difference between Norse and Swedish, like I can talk in a way that someone from the Netherlands barely can understand me real Flemish is something you don't learn in school that's just standard Dutch

In fact there is no real flemish accent... There are the accents of flanders but not really a general flemish one. We like this diversity in accents and dialects, it gives the region all the more variation. There is AN wich is "algemeen nederlands" but then again nederlands is translated as dutch. But we like our weird accents. I'm from Antwerp but I am still fascinated by all the beautifull variations.

I agree, my father. (Who is flemish, was born in Belgium, brussels) he speaks it, and your totally right. There is no accent because it's in the middle of france and germany, so, it doesn't really have an accent. it's pretty much a mixture of french and german.

Flemish, woollen (french speaking belgians), germatic speaking flems, and dutch speaking flems. They speak, flemmish, french, german, and dutch. It depends on which side of the country they live on. Holland, germany, france or somewhere in the middle. ^^ Hope that helps

@ardiesken It's not a dialect of Dutch, it's a Dutch dialect. Huge difference!! 'Of Dutch' would mean Flemish is derived from Dutch, which it isn't. Together with Brabants and Hollands it's one of its forefathers. The first form of Dutch is from the 1600s while Flemish is a 1000 years old. I don't mean to be pedantic but those are the facts.

you're confused... flemish (together with hollands, brabants, limburgs and others) are local dutch dialects. the standard language of both countries is dutch, flemish comprises just a tiny part of all dutch dialects. people from the netherlands don't speak hollands, we don't speak flemish, we all speak dutch with varying accents.
