The rapper Slim Dunkin got shot to death on FRI17DEC2011 in an Atlanta recording studio, in front of 20 eyewitnesses and the shooter was not identified.
Here is a masterpiece by the great Slim Whitman -- I Remember You. Enjoy.
The reason Andy Kaufman looks like he was in a trance was because he truly was a fan of Slim's music. You can tell Andy liked what he liked and had a true appreciation for the likes of Slim even though he wasn't popular at the time. I like this clip alot.
I spent 3 months bedridden when I was very ill in total silence. At the end of those 3 months my inner state was holy. I saw this video while in that state on the kauffman special. It was 1 of the most incredible and amazing things I have ever seen. Now that I live in the world again and have become inwardly filthy, I don't think I would have looked twice at this. But seeing this video reminds me of that beautiful time and that beautiful state when I had gods peace.

THIS IS WHAT GOOD MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE!!! NOT RnB and so on. I LOVE THE CLASSICS. what if this was the music now n we dressed like in the 50-60's n we got icecream parlors n burger shacks like back then. but we still had HD 3D TV's n most stuff now but like back then. ^^ id be happy
@1636100 Hm. I would argue that the main feature of Kaufman's humor is not its subtlety, unless "subtle" is synonymous with "invisible". Nothing against you, but I've heard so many people go on and on about him, and I don't think he was ever funny on his own. He was good as Latke, though.
I saw Slim Whitman live in Bloomburg Tx in 1949. He had a tent show and came there 2 or 3 times.I was too young then to appreciate what a great singer he really was but have listened to him off and on ever since.
There was a wrestling bear in his show. They had a syrup sopping contest and the winner got to wrestle the bear. he boy who won slapped at the bear and the bear slapped him hard. The handler came running and said you have to wrestle the bear not hit him LOL
@tuguybear You missed the point. The bear wasn't being abused the boy was. That wasn't slim whitman's act anyway. It was another act that was traveling with him.
Slim Whitman is one of the nicest gentlemen ever to grace the music industry. I have loved his music for decades. Only wish I could have seen him perform in person.
Andy Kaufman is having a brogasm at 1:23. This song is wonderful. It's nice to sing too. What happened to good music with such sweet lyrics? I would definitly like to feel that way about a women.
awesome voice, my favorite singer of all time...I remember meeting him about 20 years ago in Virginia where I had driven to from N.C. because he was going to be giving a concert there. It was held outdoors and I got to meet him face to face & thank him. It was an incredible concert. Thanks, Slim!!!! God bless you.
i first heard slim in 1977 i think i was about 10years old my dad bought the lp red river valley, I did not know what I heard , how he could sing never heard that before and since then never heard it from someone else.Slim got into the back of my mind and now I have some recordings of Slim and I enjoy every song I listen too , great
I think I know why Andy is stupefied. Check out this YouTube video made by gg32068 called “Slim Whitman meets Andy Kaufman”. Because when you see the look in Slim´s eyes when he is saying “I remember you”, I am sure that he refers to that performance of Andy.
Nice touch Gary, to end with the beginning of Indian love call. Then everybody can understand Andy´s dress.
slim was out postman in the late 60,s in shreveport louisiana he was known as the singing postman everytime i hear his music i remember him delivering our mail those was the good old days
I think Andy was actually quite surprised, but then quite pleased by Slim's beautiful voice, belying his looks. Great song sung by a great singer. Also, check out Frank Ifield's version from 1962. Thanks for posting.

@TeeShirtHut Oh, thank you for the information about Slim, although very sad.
I hope he has a lot of people around him who loves him,he seems to be a charismatic and beautiful person, as well as a unique singer. I only discovered him lately, because when I was a child my parents used to play his songs and I was only around 7 but these songs remained in my mind. I even remember some phrases of Tennessen Waltz, RoseMarie Ohh how romanticTku again Rosa
@kodiakfred140 Hello. I agree with you. Being a professional musician, for 20 some yrs, and retired in my 30's, for many reason's, including being a woman, I learned that it's only about 45% talent and 55% performance acting. Also the 55% tile, included wearing the most sexy, yet legal costume's(or clothing, whatever). Even though I did those things when young, I am regretful now! It's just so very sad, because I prefer the pure, raw talent also!
@izvn Hi! Just from pure curiosity, where did you hear, or read, that he actually learned to play the guitar as a right handed player, yet backwards, for some reason?
@izvn Im not sure but Wiki quotes: Beatle George Harrison cites Whitman as an early influence: "The first person I ever saw playing a guitar was Slim Whitman, either a photo of him in a magazine or live on television. Guitars were definitely coming in."[5] Paul McCartney credited a poster of Whitman with giving him the idea of playing his guitar left handed, with his guitar strung the opposite way to a right-handed player.[
I have a bunch of 45,s and extended play as well as LP,S i brought from Belfast,N.Ireland in 1958 ,think i have most of his records if not all and Hank Williams.
samweisberg: You got it! Andy's expression is one of almost comical rapt adoration. Hard to fake that. This is what good music is all about- and why fans are fans.
Thanks for this posting. Mr. Whitman's rendition of this beautiful piece brings tears to my eyes and makes my heart ache for my late Mom, so dear and precious. My Scottish Grandmother (maternal) was a big fan too. On a visit to Edinburgh many years ago, the guest house I stayed at had BBC piped into the rooms through an unusual radio/intercom system ... most of the musical selections were Slim Whitman tunes!! God Bless and thank you, Mr. Whitman, for the memories and the entertainment,
I remember on the show" WKRP in Cincinatti" the radio station crew teased Venus Flytrap about his collection of Slim Whitman records.I guess liking Slim Whitman is something me and ole Venus have in common.
Slim Whitman is the man who got me into yodeling. He has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard and this is one of my top favorite songs in existence. I love how enamored Andy Kaufman was with him and I don't blame him one bit.
I remember first watching that scene and hearing this song at the same time as it was done in slow motion. Boy was it sort of nerve wrecking watching and hearing this song. :)
wow ! this video is a powerful testament to the sheer power of the effect of astonishing talent has ,look at Andy Kaufmen! Not even trying to disguise is amazement , beautiful
lol. yea thats a funny look. but....but (and i know how big of a fan he was) but can you even trust that face. if he was on camera or infront of people he was always putting on a show. im sure though he was enjoying it
I never watched "The Midnight Special" much. Never knew they had such a wide variety of musical genres! I know Mr Whitman has been the butt of many jokes over the years, but he really did have an AMAZING voice. THANKS for sharing this fascinating footage with us! Hope ALL your dreams & wishes come true in the New Year! :)
Looks like Andy was a huge fan of Slim. Slim was the master of 'countri-fying' pop standards. This one's by Johnny Mercer. A great yodeler, too. Check out his "Lovesick Blues". Thanks, SCI
I don't blame Andy for being starstruck. Slim Whitman has a beautiful voice. That's how I was when I saw the Platters here on 4th of July. All the young people didn't get it, but I was up some feet away from the stage with my mouth dropped open going "OMG" in my head because those are the people I saw in the 1957 classic "The Girl Can't Help It" and one of my favorite old doo-wop groups.
im 15, listen to Rob zombie and slayer. AND I LOVE THIS SONG. I try to like all kinds of genres. Thats one thing i notice a lot of kods don't do. but your right, he really does have an amazing voice.
I never knew what reverence was before 1:22. Andy Kaufman knew who his heroes were.

I remember first watching that scene and hearing this song at the same time as it was done in slow motion. Boy was it sort of nerve wrecking watching and hearing this song. :)

I love the juxtaposition of this song with that scene, it's brilliantly ironic.

Happy birthday Mr. Whitman!

This is apparently the version that Frank Iefield copied in the mid sixties when he had a hit with this old beautiful song.
rakeuiff 2 years ago
as far as I know, Ifield recorded it first in '62, Whitman never did a version til '65, but I agree, this is a really cool track.

This a true love song! The emotions i feel listening to this song cannot be described. Andy seems to feel the same way.
warheart850 2 years ago 2
@warheart850 ...you can say that again. What Andy was 'feeling' at the time can't be described...and probably shouldn't be.

Thanks, SCI
AlbertGBaierII 2 years ago 3
Mercer was only responsible for the lyrics. Victor Scherzinger wrote the song....and died the year it was published (1941) !

Is this suppose to be satanic country music? lol

@kyler187
Exactly. People who promote that notion haven't heard THIS stuff. Simply beautiful.

I was just kidding. I saw beavis and butthead say that when they were watching this music video. It sounded funny.

Such great interaction between Andy and Slim at the start -- can you say awkward?

I don't blame Andy for being starstruck. Slim Whitman has a beautiful voice. That's how I was when I saw the Platters here on 4th of July. All the young people didn't get it, but I was up some feet away from the stage with my mouth dropped open going "OMG" in my head because those are the people I saw in the 1957 classic "The Girl Can't Help It" and one of my favorite old doo-wop groups.
I'm 21. I love this song.

im 15, listen to Rob zombie and slayer. AND I LOVE THIS SONG. I try to like all kinds of genres. Thats one thing i notice a lot of kods don't do. but your right, he really does have an amazing voice.
