Although it was at the height of the epo years it was a year filled with legends: Virenque, Riis, Indurain, Chiappucci, Zülle, Jalabert, Escartin, Armstrong and so on. I remember this day very well. Casartelli is not forgotten and proabably never will be.
It's disgusting to see how frencg TV still talks about Virenque's victory as if it was more important than Casartelli's death. What a shame !
I don't understand French, but Casartelli was dead, other cyclist were injured, why the hell are they talkin' about the stage? Virenque? Jalabert? That's disgusting, are they human or what? it's really disturbing.
I was a spectator at the Tour that year and we rode over the Col de Portet d'Aspet (where Fabio died) several times before the tour used it. The descent was pretty tricky - poor road surfaces, lots of light and shade as you pass under trees making it difficult to judge, and a pretty twisty set of bends....plus those awful concrete blocks which I think he must have contacted. Poor boy RIP
In the next days stage, everyone refused to race, they all had a leisurely ride, all monies paid that day was sent to Casartelli's wife and baby son by all the riders in the stage. At the end of the stage, all the riders allowed Casartelli's team to go off the front and they all crossed the line together holding hands with the peleton about 30 yards behind them.
No footage. Exact cause of death was determined forensically. First it was thought his bike came out from under him and he hit his head or face on asphalt at nearly 50mph. The inquiry later decided the killing blow was with a concrete block which he slid into after the fall. He probably would have crashed even without the other guys crashing. The helmet would possibly have saved him, but not certainly. I watched this that day in 1995 on tape delay, before his death was official. rough.
Yes, he died from his head injury from that concrete block. He was bare-headed, as many were back then on hot days in the mountains. Helmets were not required. He was Armstrong's teammate, and Lance continues to visit his family whenever he can.
they found out a helmet wouldnt have saved him because the injuries were on the side of his head and face where a helmet doesnt protect it. so probably even with a modern helmet he unfortunately would have died too.
actually the Next day they didn't really race. The peloton just rode out the stage. Allowed the Motorolla team to cross the line as a team ahead of the pack. The stage following that is when Lance won solo break away. Not trying to be an ass or anything. I agree what a way to honour a fallen team mate!! R.I.P. Casartelli Olympic Champion

Okay. from 0:44 I am going to assume that he hit his head on that concrete block to the lower right of him?
Can someone explain to me in detail on how he got killed? Because I am confused. From other sources a crash was in front of him.

horrific accident and an absolute tragedy that someone died out of it. Makes you more aware of how dangerous the tour de france is.

nah, it makes you more aware to wear a helmet while speed cycling. he only wore a hat, and that was pretty crucial to him.
