  • Although it was at the height of the epo years it was a year filled with legends: Virenque, Riis, Indurain, Chiappucci, Zülle, Jalabert, Escartin, Armstrong and so on. I remember this day very well. Casartelli is not forgotten and proabably never will be.

  • what did 0:49 have? the one in yellow..?

  • R.I.P Casartelli, Kivilev, and Weylandt ;(

  • R.I.P Weyland

  • I can't watch this...

  • RIP

  • :'(

  • fabio is on 0:49?

  • @Stumpy109 yes, it's him

  • @Stumpy109 Unfortunately yes...

  • RIP Casartelli

    RIP Casartelli.

  • Hopefully nothing like this is seen again. A great tragedy

  • no one helps the poor man at 0:54

  • @YoNico111 because he was still able to say something

as you see in 0:15: casartelli was like swimming in his own blood and unconcious. who would you help?

It's disgusting to see how frencg TV still talks about Virenque's victory as if it was more important than Casartelli's death. What a shame !

  • I was a spectator at the Tour that year and we rode over the Col de Portet d'Aspet (where Fabio died) several times before the tour used it. The descent was pretty tricky - poor road surfaces, lots of light and shade as you pass under trees making it difficult to judge, and a pretty twisty set of bends....plus those awful concrete blocks which I think he must have contacted. Poor boy RIP

  • The stage on the second day after the crash was won by Fabio's teammate Lance Armstrong.

  • In the next days stage, everyone refused to race, they all had a leisurely ride, all monies paid that day was sent to Casartelli's wife and baby son by all the riders in the stage. At the end of the stage, all the riders allowed Casartelli's team to go off the front and they all crossed the line together holding hands with the peleton about 30 yards behind them.

  • R.I.P. Fabio...

  • Does anyone know if there is footae of the crash which may elaborate as to what caused this unfortunate incident.

  • No footage. Exact cause of death was determined forensically. First it was thought his bike came out from under him and he hit his head or face on asphalt at nearly 50mph. The inquiry later decided the killing blow was with a concrete block which he slid into after the fall. He probably would have crashed even without the other guys crashing. The helmet would possibly have saved him, but not certainly. I watched this that day in 1995 on tape delay, before his death was official. rough.

  • Okay. from 0:44 I am going to assume that he hit his head on that concrete block to the lower right of him?

Can someone explain to me in detail on how he got killed? Because I am confused. From other sources a crash was in front of him.

  • Yes, he died from his head injury from that concrete block. He was bare-headed, as many were back then on hot days in the mountains. Helmets were not required. He was Armstrong's teammate, and Lance continues to visit his family whenever he can.

  • Fabio Casartelli R.I.P

  • horrific accident and an absolute tragedy that someone died out of it. Makes you more aware of how dangerous the tour de france is.

  • nah, it makes you more aware to wear a helmet while speed cycling. he only wore a hat, and that was pretty crucial to him.

  • They think he still would have died if he'd been wearing a helmet. Anyway, he still should have been wearing one.

  • r.i.p fabio

  • Lance Armstrong for the win in 2009!!!

  • They are all lying and doped !

  • that what happens if you use too many drugs

Qualcuno mi sa dire cos'è successo poi negli anni a venire? Fabio VIVE!

  • R.I.P. Casartelli & Kivilev

    Heroes...

    Respect... :'(

  • Casartelli R.I.P Homenage . Thanks You for the video .

  • I don't understand the rules in this era of cycling; was choice of wearing a helmet at the rider's expense?

  • if i understand your question right, you want to know if the riders had to wear a helmet.

well, wearing a helmet is compulsory since andrei kivilevs fatal crash in paris-nice in 2003.

  • RIP

  • Fabio Casartelli R.I.P.

¿Why Casartelli don´t used helmet?

  • they found out a helmet wouldnt have saved him because the injuries were on the side of his head and face where a helmet doesnt protect it. so probably even with a modern helmet he unfortunately would have died too.

  • That's pretty sad. You can see Casartelli lying there motionless and there is a stream of blood on the road.

  • RIP

  • R.I.P. Casartelli.. and when the next stage was won by Armstrong.. and he showed to the sky for Casartelli.. that was very sad

  • actually the Next day they didn't really race. The peloton just rode out the stage. Allowed the Motorolla team to cross the line as a team ahead of the pack. The stage following that is when Lance won solo break away. Not trying to be an ass or anything. I agree what a way to honour a fallen team mate!! R.I.P. Casartelli Olympic Champion
