Silva wouldn't go to the ground with Leites or Maia, so that shows already he's not a person who wants to grapple, especially not an olympic calibur judoka.
@xbm Silva isn't a champion of brute force. Most of his opponents are stronger than him. The thing that makes him a true champion is that he wins by skill, technique and maneuverability. You mentioned that Lombard is shorter and more muscular; very true. However this actually works against him when facing Silva because of Silva's enormous reach advantage. Silva has a great take down defense and being the wise champion that he is, he can just keep the fight off the ground
@xbm and use his reach advantage to get the win. The problem with ground and pound and BJJ is that no matter how many times you take down your opponent, they can get back up with ease when you have a great rounded background like Silva.

Silva has a great take down defense and being the wise champion that he is, he can just keep the fight off the ground

Getting up from being taken down by a world class wrestler or judoka is not easy, and like I said Lombard is a lot shorter than Silva so his center of gravity is smaller. Meaning, he could throw around Silva like a rag doll, as well as the fact that having reach doesn't mean it's an automatic win. Silva is a better striker, but his ground game is not as good as Lombard's.

@xbm True. However, its a lot easier to keep the fight standing than it is to take it to the ground. Although Lombard might be a world class wrestler, so is Silva. He, also, has a black belt in Judo and BJJ (if you didn't already know). Even though Lombard has the CAPABILITY to throw Silva around like a rag doll, doesn't mean he'll get that opportunity at all. Also, you're really underestimating Silva's ground game; Silva has taken it upon himself to prove his critics wrong...

I wasn't trying to focus on the fact that he won by submission on both occasions, I was trying to highlight that he went up against both fighters, both who are known for their wrestling and taking their fights to the ground, and even when the fight went to the ground, Silva was able to come out on top. Anyway, do well and get a title shot? okay, that I can agree with.

good punch he set it up great when the opponent tried to get in the clinch and tie him up. clearly thishas happened many times he knew right away it was a bad tie up attempt and I would say delivered a right cross of anything. hector was to the left of him basically in not any real danger out of his line of attack. you can see hector setting up that strike as soon as vitale tried to tie up.
