once i get the blu ray drive out of the ps3 i'm assuming its a sata cable its using? Shouldn't i be able to plug it in to a computer at that point and eject without hopening the blu ray drive itself? I understand the computer won't be able to read the disk off the drive but you would think the eject would at least work on the drive

@arock1999 No. I got the YLOD yesterday ans spent some time opening the whole thing up to apply the heat gun fix. The Blu-ray player is not attached with a SATA cable, but rather a proprietary thin cable that will not hook up to something else.

@Cozzybalboa - this doesn't help if the save is copy protected - even backing up the PS3 & restoring it will not work, the saves are tied to the particular console. Thankfully after the last YLOD I took out a Plus sub, so the games that support it, the saves are now up on the cloud.

@ThinkerSociety Thanks, but no thanks. I've got no thermal paste, and there's no one near me selling it. Also, I don't plan to repair my PS3: it has served me honorably since 2007, I think that the internals are so screwed that any fix would be only temporary - also, the Slim is nice and cheap.

Thanks! I finally removed my rented game after 5 days late of being stuck. Then I did the hair dryer trick just for fun and my system works again, but now I can't put a disc in there. The spring clamps that were in there retracted when I took the disc out and I believe the system thinks there's a disc in there when there is not.

thanks buddy this video helped a lot! ours is a 40gb ps3, but basically the same screws to remove. btw we didn't have a disc stuck, but instead 2 square magnets both smaller than a disc that our 2 y.o. niece inserted. realignment of some mechanical stuff inside had to be done before a successful disc load/eject but it appears to be working fine now. 2 thumbs up for getting us going!

I have an older 40 gig PS3. This vid saved me because my 1 yr old somehow fit 3 DVDs in the PS3 blue ray drive. Needless to say, they weren't coming out unless I opened up its guts for some tech nerding surgery. I had it all done and put back together in 10 minutes. The only thing I couldn't figure out was how to get the ribbon off the blue ray drive. I just left it on an handled it very carefully. One note, there is an "S" on the cover where the short screw goes. Thanks again for posting!
