Amazing Video Matt! Very Helpful, Please can you watch My Short Film 7th Floor on my Channel and give me some comments on it. it would be great! thanks
*Sigh* There's no such thing as an interlaced camera, only interlaced shooting formats. Yes this was shot on interlaced. I really dont like shooting progressive on long videos, sony vegas seems to crap its pants. And I would really like to use adobe premiere but I need a new computer with a 64bit OS, which I am saving for. Thanks
@DanielMatotek yeh sorry thats what i meant. interlaced is pretty much pointless. because anytime there is any type of motion you tend to get that lines across the screen effect.
I was just wanting to ask for you opinion on the Camera I own. I bought a Sony HDR-SR11E and I was curious to read your thoughts on the product. It would be much appreciated and Thank You
I'll be blunt here, the camera is not too bad. But not as good as my camera. The biggest difference between mine and yours is the quality of lenses. Mine is a much bigger lens and much more expensive lens giving it much better quality without going to technical. I like your cameras slow motion effect and overall you should be able to make some pretty sweet videos with this camera, it is nothing to complain about. As I said you can use anything and it is much better than my first one!!!
Haha alright I can definitely believe that. I am slightly new at the whole thing and I am majorly confused on the camera sitautions at the moment... but thank you for your help!
it is MUCH better to use a 500 box camera like Nikon D3100, NOT a camcorder. These cameras has much bigger sensor, and there are a lot of things you can set on a camera, like aperture etc... MUCH better quality.
@mainstreams how is #1 not true? Aliasing and rolling shutter are proven disadvantages of using a DSLR.
even if you record externally you need reference audio and if you don't have (at minimum) $100 to get an external recorder you ARE stuck with the internal mic
and while stands and rigs do exist the one problem with them is that they cost money (usually around $300 on the lowest end) unless it's homemade which has it's own disadvantages obviously.
I believe that it everyone is entitled to their own opinion and need to choose the best camera when possible. If i was doing slow moving dolly shots and just a standard sketch without anything crazy. I would definitely use the Canon 5D but if I was filming for an action movie I would use something like the Arri Alexa which has some of the best quality video I have seen period possible better than film. But it just depends what you want you are both right guys!
Just drag the colour correction setting you want over the entire layer on the left of the screen. It will colour correct everything on the whole layer!
there are small problems around this video but as a whole, it's a great tutorial for starters
biggest problems:
1 HD doesn't equal Depth of field, it's that higher budget cameras are usually HD and almost always have larger sensors, it's the larger sensor that causes the DOF not just the HD
2 jumping from "above 2K" to 8K for a camera is something I would avoid. sure 8 is more than 2 but there's a lot of middle ground that you didn't cover.
there is more, but I don't want to explain everything.
Think what you want, but I have to say your camera looks really bad. The noise is way too high, highlights blown way out, quality is so low. No depth of field. And in the description you put I am wrong. Why would you do that? Also you have the rolling shutter effect. YOU are the one who is wrong, I know what I am talking about I study film at university, colour correction does not make your camera higher quality.
/watch?v=-Qv_oR_PFeE Watch 720p your camera will never be this good.
I'm pretty sure what you're talking about is light streaks, its a default video effect in Final Cut Pro 7. I think thats what you after is the blue long lines what you are talking about? If so all they do is make streaks on really bright objects like light sources. But if you mean lens flares Video Co-Pilot have some really good lens flares if you pay for them. Hope it helps!
Shut up.... Stupid know it all idiot. I don't confess to knowing it all but I know more than you and the last thing I would do is point a camera in my face and teach grandmas to suck eggs!!...
Each film each scene each shot is composed on its own merits. You cannot and should not stand there and say how to shoot action scenes.. It's so subjective.
And Vegas pro??.. Where was that tutorial cause that's why I clicked on your link in the first place!
I shot this on 50i, i forgot to change the setting to 25p. So it was interlaced plus when you pick HD its not that bad. My bad, but i did notice it after I couldn't be bothered to reshoot sorry
As a filmmaker I think this is a good video. I'll post you some videos on what I have done in the past. I went to Film School but dont have the professional gear. Like you said, you dont need an expensive camera to make a film so great. I'll keep in contact.
HD has nothing to do with shallow DOF. High Def refers to how many lines of resolution the camera records. Shallow dof is created by sensor size, and lens aperature size. Why do these idiots make vids when they are fucking clueless, it's utter misinformation.
Considering I study Bachelors of Technology - Digital Film & Television, I know what I am talking about. I didn't say "By doing this, your camera will magically make HD video". Of course I know HD isn't all about the DOF, but the cinematic look comes from the shallow depth of field from the large lenses and censors we use, this also creates separation between layers. Notice the title "Cinematic Film Look" not "Magically turn your shitty $100 handycam into perfection" so STFU.... U MAD BRO?
How long did you think it would take to learn everything about basic cinema two seconds???? If you can't stand my voice fucking click the back button and go look at another shitty video so you can write a comment there too. Instead you choose to give your hugely impacting significant opinion *Lol*. Why the fuck did you click the video when you can see how long it is on the thumbnail. And if you want to argue please do, it makes my video and channel much more popular :D
You need to record sound separate my friend. Usually the easiest and cheapest way is to do a voice over at home with a decent microphone but the absolute best way. Have separate sound being recorded on location with a shotgun mic on a boompole or something like that. Thanks for the comment if you have anymore questions send me a message :D
i would really get a DSLR or at least a Super zoom Camera, the panasonic fz150 is really good and offers a mic input. They are really better due to more manual control and crisp picture which is why indie films are popping up everywhere with great quality. but everything else you said was really true.
The best way is to use a CANON camera, with the "white balance", DOF adapter, full HD with 24 frames per second, and use a gaussian blur. You won´t achieve all this quality with a webcam.
@drummerd98 For 2 holidays I used a Panasonic HM-TA1 that's for sale at 80 euros. It's video quality is OK. Now im going to get a Canon 600d. Which is alot better but the Panasonic scores really good on Price-Performance. You just have to see for yourself. The panasonic looks ok(5,5 on 10) on a 42 inch Full HD TV.
Oh and Shallow Focus is also called Macro on cameras/camcorders. If you want to be like pro/real/good filmers get a camera/camcorder that has Manual Focus instead of Auto Focus- Manual-You Can control the Shallow focus/macro yourself and Auto-you usually have to zoom or move the camera around for your blur, more gueswork- :D
Well truthfully, DSRL Camera's "Warping" really depends on the settings on the camera and if you know how to use it. on cameras, because they have some of the best editors in the world as well as cinematographers. No matter how much you don't want it to. Cameras will always matter.
Yeah, why do you think they use $100,000 cameras on movies. If it didn't matter they would get a $70 dollar piece of crap. What I meant in the video is that you don't have to have THE BEST THING EVER. Just something decent works too
Very informative video! But you should take note from te previous comments.
Firstly that interlacing you have is a big issue when you filmed your bluescreen scenes. Your gonna need progressive on that camera or either adjust the bitrate in your render settings. Either you have a higher bitrate than its suppose to be, or you have to lower it.
Secondly its not Megabytes. Its Megabits. Those terms can make a HUGE difference if used incorrectly. A IT pro will cringe if you mistaken MB (Megabyte
Is it just me, or did you not convert your interlaced to a progressive type footage? It drops a bit of quality for sure, but it does eliminate those lines where there is a lot of movement. I do it on all my videos.
I would also not recommend any camera without a progressive setting anymore. There are a lot on the market nowadays, and even sony jumped on the bandwagon a while back. I am still using my old 1440x1080i sony hdr-cx7, but when I upgrade I am leaning towards the hdr-cx700v. 1080/60p!
Good job man! Really nice. However, I don´t really agree about the tripod thing. I think it´s also good to have shots without movement, but that´s more a style-discussion. Anyway, good job!
How do you change the point of view from the one to an other person whit out moving the camera. yerh i know the pause button but then you will get strange holes in the covesation.:=)?
Honestly for me I would never buy something like that, but it really depends how serious you are. If you're not going to make it more than a hobby. Then by all means buy it. But if you're going to be fussy and you want it as a hobby you probably want to spend a little more. You might want something like the Canon - HV40
And I render at AVI around 17000kb/s or H.264 15000kb/s
Pretty good camera but the one to get these days is the hfs 21 the model above mine, image is a bit clearer nothing insane difference. But get the hfs 11 over the 200 They are about the same price
Great video man. Really helped a lot. If you keep making more, I'll keep watchin' 'em.
Would you happen to know if Final Cut Express is (easily) compatible with Adobe After Effects? I would love to have Final Cut Pro, but alas, I have little to no money.
I guess what I'm asking is, would FCE and AE together accomplish something similar to what FCP could accomplish?
Yeah, FCE is very similar to FCP and AE is compatible with EVERYTHING because you can export the video however you like standard AVI should work fine in FCE and yes together you would easily make something good :D
Hey Daniel, Loved the vid! Ive been watchin ur vids for awhile now and i have to say they are probably some of the best i have seen on YouTube. Obviously b/c u actually put effort into ur vids unlike most of the people on here:P. Lol well very well explained i am a photographer myself and this will def help me get better shots.
hey, i left a video response, dunno if it worked, but anyways, if it did, lemme know what u think, im currently studying in film at school, and this was a project i did a few months back...yeah
btw, vid was good, you really did cover all the basics with all the right information, unlike some other videos i have seen on youtube...

@mainstreams problems with using a "box camera" (called a dslr)
1: fast motion image distortion
2: shitty audio
3: bad ergonomics (how it's made for you to hold it can shake and other instabilities)
4: it can be hard to constantly adjust focus to keep the main subject in focus
5: you need more than just 1 lens which costs a TON by even the third lens (which is no where close to the end)
I could go on but I'll just stop myself here.
hobocamptheater 2 months ago
@hobocamptheater Sorry... I misspelled: 500 bucks, not box :))
1. sorry, but not true
2. no one is recording the sound with the camera nor with the camcorder
3. there are all kind of stands for DSLRs, steady etc.
I have lots colleagues working on film movies, making video clips for famous bands and in TV, most of them are using DSLR nowadays.

SeigeAirsoftUk 8 months ago

A IT pro will cringe if you mistaken MB (Megabyte
lvlselect 8 months ago

Anyway, good job!

its 24 megaBITS per second, not megaBYTES
10 mBITS or something (i dunno) are about 1 mBYTE or something

I did my best on my video but i recorded on the iphone :/

The whole tripod vs. handheld thing is debatable,
and HD doesn't really have anything to do with depth of field

great video i subscribed.. but would you say the lumix g2 is a good camera for filming too?
OngakuTurtle 11 months ago
Thanks man, that was really helpful. I just have a few questions:
What settings on Vegas Pro do you use to render videos filmed by the Canon Vixia?
I'm planning on getting a Canon Vixia HF M300. Is that good for making low budget short films? Is there something better in the same price range?
Thanks, I'd really appreciate it if you can answer these questions.
LermanProductions 11 months ago
Honestly for me I would never buy something like that, but it really depends how serious you are. If you're not going to make it more than a hobby. Then by all means buy it. But if you're going to be fussy and you want it as a hobby you probably want to spend a little more. You might want something like the Canon - HV40
And I render at AVI around 17000kb/s or H.264 15000kb/s
DanielMatotek 11 months ago
@DanielMatotek What do you think of the Canon HF S200 for low buget film making?
MrE2727 8 months ago
Pretty good camera but the one to get these days is the hfs 21 the model above mine, image is a bit clearer nothing insane difference. But get the hfs 11 over the 200 They are about the same price

Great video man. Really helped a lot. If you keep making more, I'll keep watchin' 'em.
Would you happen to know if Final Cut Express is (easily) compatible with Adobe After Effects? I would love to have Final Cut Pro, but alas, I have little to no money.
I guess what I'm asking is, would FCE and AE together accomplish something similar to what FCP could accomplish?
Thanks very much.
ckrug32 1 year ago
Yeah, FCE is very similar to FCP and AE is compatible with EVERYTHING because you can export the video however you like standard AVI should work fine in FCE and yes together you would easily make something good :D
