Geordi Laforge was never believable as the Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise. He was too young and inexperienced to be the Head of Engineering of the Galaxy Class Enterprise. The Enterprise-D of all ships is a Capital Ship. A Department Head on that ship,especially the Chief Engineer would have to be as experienced and even more experienced than the Captain. Also, Picard needed a Principal Crew member to square off against Professionally. John Amos would have walked of with the Part.
