There's one fatal disadvantage to the AK-47 that nobody really considers: the materials used and the cheap building process renders the weapon highly inaccurate because the barrel and upper receiver flex and wobble a shitload when fired. As far as US troops using AKs, only because 7.62x39 ammo is everywhere in the sandbox. The M16 has proven itself more effective time and time again.
