I DO NOT GIVE A FUCK WHAT THEY SAY!!! Johnny Ringo was killed by someone...he did not "commit suicide" like they claim....Doc Holliday killed him! At least that's the way I like to view it! How in da hell does a 'top of his class gun man' kill himself?......I'm waiting.....
@MINIeminemFAN Johnny Ringo's death was ruled a suicide on 7-13-1882. Holliday was in Colorado fighting a court case. "Official records of the District Court of Pueblo County, Colorado indicate that both Doc and his attorney appeared in court there on July 11, 14, and 18, 1882." Most historians believe there is absolutely no physical possibility that Holliday could've killed Ringo. Although there is a small faction that believe homicide occurred, most believe in the initial coroner's findings.
@WRK004 There isn't really any historical evidence that Johnny Ringo was an extraordinary fighter. He's known for murdering a well-known person who wasn't even fighting him, as well as shooting unarmed people on their own property. But other than that, there's nothing to show.
Love the scene and the performance, but one thing bugs me. Val Kilmer I think misunderstood the meaning of the expression Doc used in real life, "you're a daisy if you do." Kilmer seemed to have interpreted being a daisy as some sort of positive thing, when actually being a daisy means being dead, a daisy growing on your grave. So for him to say here "you're no daisy, you're no daisy at all" doesn't really make sense, since that is exactly Ringo is here, a daisy, ie, dead.
This duel is my favorite scene. Exciting, but sad.
Ringo was a 'bad guy' but a charismatic deadly gunslinger even Wyatt could not have beaten. It always saddens me to see a strong man defeated by another strong man, even in a movie. If two men start this kind of 'game', there are necessarily a winner and a loser.
After watching the documentary about Once Upon a Time in the West, it becomes clear that the gunfight choreography and cinematography is based on Sergio Leone: Circling around each other and the huge close ups, etc.
What is fascinating to me is in the last several years I've seen so many mediocre performances turned in by Kilmer it's hard to believe he's the same actor .... I remember in the movie 'Heat' although his character wasn't a primary focus he brought an intensity and realism to the part just as he did in Tombstone tho this performance is OSCAR worthy as many here mention.. Lately I dunno what it is, perhaps some self-esteem/confidence issues related to weight gain... he just isn't his old self. :(

@dragonvania That's because he knew he was against someone who not only was better than him but had nothing to lose. When you fight a man with nothing to lose he becomes very difficult to kill. Ringo was smart enough to know this but also knew he had no choice once Holliday said we started a game we never got to finish. And I totally agree with your comment.
@WRK004 so it's clear that Wyatt Earp was not capable of fighting Ringo? i mean,he was good in every aspect, but not when it comes to a duel,he was not that fast.
The only one who could fight Ringo (known for being fast and full of skills) was Holliday, who had the same features.
@tonymtno There is actually a scene in the movie where Wyatt asks Doc if he can beat Ringo to which Holliday says in a sobering "No". Wyatt is a skilled fighter and lawman but he was at least in my opinion not able to beat Ringo in a one on one duel.

@edwdixon5 this was by far ONE OF THE BEST MODERN WESTERNS OF ALL TIME. every other modern western SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KURT RUSSEL AND VAL KILMER...BEST WYATT ERP AND DOC HOLIDAY EVER......and 4 everyone else who saw this movie.....i think this where they got "DON'T BE A BIG IKE" from cause he acts big n bad but he is just a chicken....lol
@edwdixon5: I liked Kilmer's portrayal, but I have to give the nod to Quaid's version in "Wyatt Earp." Kilmer's Holliday was a little too polished and smooth, presenting Holliday as a dandy; Quaid's was rough and spastic, better representing a man who was both a momma's boy and a dentist. I also felt Quaid better portrayed the anger and bitterness towards life that made Holliday so self-destructive. I would love to see a version with Russell and Quaid, since Costner brought no humanity to Earp.
That is true. Everyone was so good in this movie. Those playing the "bad guys" were so good they created sympathy for their evil characters--like Stephen Lang as Ike Clanton.
wtf do u know about quick draw? in fact im almost close towards how fast he was and doc holliday in fact im close and yet doc holliday believed in poker for na reason people even if u people admare him but he lived as an outlaw but he believed of being truth about himself even if people werent the only friend that even wanted to be his friend was warp.. it takes a man to understand another one through there actions...
Everybody talks about Doc and Wyatt in these films, but I have to say I LOVE Virgil (Sam Elliot) in this film. I think he had some awesome moments of his own. Remember Ike talking about how he'd cut their "goddamn pimp hearts out" and Virgil stepped into him, eyes ablaze, "Don't you threaten me you little SON OF A BITCH!" And let's not forget, "I've still got one good arm to hold you with," which is an historically accurate line.
And whoever is saying no western beats this movie is nutz. Tombstone was amazing, but mostly because of Kilmer, who should have won the Oscar. His best performance by far. However , Unforgiven is the best western ever made. End of discussion. Happens to have Clint at his best too. Unforgiven is the perfect western and a masterpiece. Kilmers acting in Tombstone was a masterpiece. There's a difference.
People don't realize why Holiday was so fast. Especially towards the end of his life. Besides his reflexes, and just being a fast draw, he had no fear, and had nothing to live for towards the end. Thus nerves of steal. Combine his natural ability with his ice in his veins, and smarts, and you have a very deadly shooter, one of the fastest. No hesitation, no fear and great reflexes. It was his mental ability that put him over the top.
Johnny Ringo killed himself... Doc Holliday was overrated as a gunslinger, and one time pulled on an unarmed man behind the bar and missed him completely. Ringo was far more hardcore, and was known as a sharpshooter. Ringo tried to take them all on, but the Earps were pimps. True.
Noone knows how Ringo died, he was found against a tree with a gun in his hand and a bullet in his head. Ringo was a psycopath, generally despised, who rarely, if ever, fought fairly but usually just gunned his victims down without warning.
Wether Holliday was overrated, I don't know, and nor do I care. Because: This is an epic MOVIE. Kilmer and Biehn are awesome in this scene, and the whole piece is just one of the most entertaing westerns I have ever seen.
@LarS1963 - Hey, I love Tombstone but not how biased it. Ringo was actually a better shot. Myths & reps have historians still debating facts. Ringo/Holliday did attempt the quick-draw duel twice getting them arrested, however; Doc was in Colo for court when Ringo died. Experts feel they feared one another(when not drunk and friendly)due to their reputations for being deadly sharpshooters and cold-blooded nature.
And still both Billy the Kid and Jim Miller woulda put them in the dirt.
@TexasPsychoK Johnny Ringo was not known as a gunslinger... just a ill tempered asshole, Holiday was known more for gunslining then ringo was and he didn't claim to even be one
It wasn't because Doc Holliday was a fast gun or good at cards, with his health condition he had nothing to lose and his former life was gone forever and he just went for broke on everything. One more thought Earp would not have taken Ringo Doc saved his life on just what I said before.
If you read into the Real life death of Johnny Ringo you will find that this movie is very accurate in the story it depicts. Ringo had one shot out of his gun and one bullet in his head. Many people say that he did shoot his self. I say Doc was the Fucking Man.
I have no taste for westerns at all, But this movie here not only did i love it but its up there on my top 5 favorite movies of all time, that damn Val Kilmer Is exactly What an actor should be, The lines, the poise, Itz a crime if you haven't seen this movie.
my last comment, though the performance was amazing and the actors talents are epic, i never really liked val's portrayal of doc holiday, it was to arrogant, to full of himself, i often found i was waiting for doc to get hit, i just couldn't like the character a character who never is afraid, hurt or never undergoes some kind of change is not following a realitic tone.
@MAnnaconduit1 doc had a pretty deep moment when he showed how much wyatt meant to him. "wyatt is my friend" "ive got plenty of friends" "i dont....."
one of vals greatest moments, and Yes doc holiday did have another side to him, which only his bestest friends could see, it was a pity he died before he could show others that side to him.
@MAnnaconduit1 Much of the Wild West has become American Folktale. Truth is, not much is known about these men other then the fact they were involved in well publicized events. We know a lot about Wyatt Earp and still don't really know what he was like. This is a great movie but the reality of the Ole West was much more dark and tragic. Holliday has been described in old writings as a very arrogant man but smart man who was able to concoct a deadly reputation even though the storys arent true.
in reality no one knows who killed ringo (or maybe they found out since i last read up on it) they assume it was either doc or wyatt but i doubt it, i think in reality someone got the drop on him, doc was fast but he was sick and dying from sickness and wyatt was never better than ringo, in this movie however i liked how holiday finsihed ringo, it was like his final mission as he died right after, val kilmer was good
come on!...COME ON!!!!...ohhh johnny :(

True.

@TexasPsychoK If you pay attention to what Doc says, you'll notice he hints at the diffrent theories on how Ringo died :D
MartinTraXAA 9 months ago
@TexasPsychoK Blah blah blah!
LarS1963 9 months ago
@LarS1963 - Hey, I love Tombstone but not how biased it. Ringo was actually a better shot. Myths & reps have historians still debating facts. Ringo/Holliday did attempt the quick-draw duel twice getting them arrested, however; Doc was in Colo for court when Ringo died. Experts feel they feared one another(when not drunk and friendly)due to their reputations for being deadly sharpshooters and cold-blooded nature.
And still both Billy the Kid and Jim Miller woulda put them in the dirt.
TexasPsychoK 9 months ago
@TexasPsychoK Johnny Ringo was not known as a gunslinger... just a ill tempered asshole, Holiday was known more for gunslining then ringo was and he didn't claim to even be one

bjroberts65 10 months ago
It wasn't because Doc Holliday was a fast gun or good at cards, with his health condition he had nothing to lose and his former life was gone forever and he just went for broke on everything. One more thought Earp would not have taken Ringo Doc saved his life on just what I said before.

If you read into the Real life death of Johnny Ringo you will find that this movie is very accurate in the story it depicts. Ringo had one shot out of his gun and one bullet in his head. Many people say that he did shoot his self. I say Doc was the Fucking Man.

my last comment, though the performance was amazing and the actors talents are epic, i never really liked val's portrayal of doc holiday, it was to arrogant, to full of himself, i often found i was waiting for doc to get hit, i just couldn't like the character a character who never is afraid, hurt or never undergoes some kind of change is not following a realitic tone.

@MAnnaconduit1 doc had a pretty deep moment when he showed how much wyatt meant to him. "wyatt is my friend" "ive got plenty of friends" "i dont....."
bloodrain744 11 months ago
@bloodrain744
one of vals greatest moments, and Yes doc holiday did have another side to him, which only his bestest friends could see, it was a pity he died before he could show others that side to him.
MAnnaconduit1 11 months ago
@MAnnaconduit1 Much of the Wild West has become American Folktale. Truth is, not much is known about these men other then the fact they were involved in well publicized events. We know a lot about Wyatt Earp and still don't really know what he was like. This is a great movie but the reality of the Ole West was much more dark and tragic. Holliday has been described in old writings as a very arrogant man but smart man who was able to concoct a deadly reputation even though the storys arent true.
6Ott7 10 months ago
in reality no one knows who killed ringo (or maybe they found out since i last read up on it) they assume it was either doc or wyatt but i doubt it, i think in reality someone got the drop on him, doc was fast but he was sick and dying from sickness and wyatt was never better than ringo, in this movie however i liked how holiday finsihed ringo, it was like his final mission as he died right after, val kilmer was good
