my department just got text messaging, it helps a lot especially when you are not on the first truck and you didn't hear what the address was and now you can go back to your phone instead of having to listen to the entire page again, also when i am out of town i know when i miss a call.
Boy, I remember the days of Tone and Voice paging/alerting. I used to know all the tones for each station. Our department and dispatch center now use digital alphanumeric paging/alerting exclusively. I was skeptical at first, but digital paging is WAY FASTER, and you don't have to wait for each stations tone sequence to play-out. With digital, the page goes out simultaneously to all stations dispatched. Like I said, WAY faster...
but then scanner buffs are out of luck...lcd sends out text messages in addition to paging out with tones but the text messages are a little slower sometimes
here in my town everyone has a minitor iv plus an alphanumeric pager the minitor iv got me up for a first -4th alarm fire at our towns waste management facility...smelled like rotten fucking eggs
@firedude201234 - here in MI at the FD we have both as well and an option to have text sent to cell phones which only one person has setup. I personally love the minitor, I have a 5 which is starting to act up so I am switching to a 4 as I have heard wonderful things. When I am not at the station and have stuff to do around town and dont want the M5 it's nice to still be alerted which the alpha pager works just fine. It is delayed by 15 seconds which = response time
@nhfdcadet my station does the texts to but you cant rely on them cause sometimes it takes like 5 minutes to get it and then you have to call the number to hear the call. so by time you do that you'll miss the trucks
@sirhcdeer I'm a junior firefighter, but I like the old system better. Where I live, the new system doesn't work very well. They are still broadcasting both ways.
best pagers ever!! records the voice if you forget the address, and it's better than the new ones because it's smaller, and still uses AAA batteries, instead of the new ones that have their own batteries.
stored voice is the way to go. it makes it a lot easier if u forget the address, or when you put videos up on youtube since you dont need to sit there with a camera while tones are going out.
new hartford responds to nepaug? that seems kinda far but thats cool. i live in avon and travel up 202 quite often to go to home depot and my buddy goes to the tech school there, not sure what the name is (oliver wilcott?). but thats cool. keep up the good work!
Nepaug is actually a district within New Hartford. NHFD responds to nepaug during the week 6 am to 6 pm. usually nepaug cancels them tho because new hartford can never get a crew and if they do roll its either with just a driver or a bunch of useless ppl that like to play fireman. but its not that far away, maybe 5 minutes.
fortunately, i don't know of anybody that would sit there and record their pager when their tones go off. as soon as the tones go off, even before the dispatch, i'm getting dressed, grabbing the pager, my keys and i'm either on my way to my station or going direct response. i don't just sit there listening to it.
ok, i run with two departments. one of them, i'm allowed to go direct to the scene as long as it's in the first due. the other, you have to be on the truck unless you're an officer (which i am not). both companies send out pages over text messages but the first is extremely unreliable. if you miss the address, you need to be on the truck. i can see where stored voice would come in handy.

i get my text as tones are dropping

The memory function also comes in handy for writing down what time the first page was sent out so you can write it down on the call sheet.
