It is sort of correct that Alexander was Greek-ish. Macedon back then was in the bounderies of modern day Greece, but ancient Greeks regarded them as outsiders and barbarous - but they were a separate people from Greeks themselves.
Modern day FYROM though has no real right to claim Alexander as there own though. He wasn't from there at all, and the people aren't related to ancient Macedon either.

Incidentally modern DNA evidence suggest a substantial number of Greeks are even genetically related. Then of course our modern language is clearly descended from Koine Greek (the official language of the Macedonian empire), and massive aspects of our culture is derived from ancient Greeks.

The majority of the population in that area was Macedonian there were greeks but they were in minority. Thessaloniki was a Macedonian city. When the Turks left Macedonia was devided between Serbia, Bulgaria & Greece. But the Greeks were the only ones that drowe the Macedonian population in exile as well as the Turkish and they replaced it with the Greeks driven away

Unless of course your speaking gentically, in which case it is not really known how much of an influence the slavs had. Alexander was not a greek either, he was a Macedonian, part of the people that lived to the north of greece and gave their name to the later Roman province and the region in general. The Macedonian culture where very much a hybrid as they were highly influenced by greek culture and the greek language which the macedonian nobility spoke fluently with minor exceptions. The greeks at the time were very keen to draw a distinction between themselves and the macedonians.

As a neutral party with a certain historical knowledge, due to the fact that i study history, let me end the discussion on the previous pages so it can return to the actual topic, the TV show. Alexander were neither Greek, nor what is today considered macedonian. The Macedonians that inhabit the Republic of Macedonia imigrated to the region during the Great Migrations in the 4. Century AD, a good 7 centuries after Alexanders death, therefore making any claim to the contrary a bit ridiculous.

It is sort of correct that Alexander was Greek-ish. Macedon back then was in the bounderies of modern day Greece, but ancient Greeks regarded them as outsiders and barbarous - but they were a separate people from Greeks themselves.
Modern day FYROM though has no real right to claim Alexander as there own though. He wasn't from there at all, and the people aren't related to ancient Macedon either.

I don't blame people for not knowing ancient Macedonians were Greeks though. FYROM nationalists (and their apologists that call them "Macedonia" that now pretend to not notice their sudden change into "ancient Macedonians".). consistently hide information they both self-identified as Greeks and were accepted by other Greeks as Greeks. Any quotes to the contrary are always out of context (e.g. Demonstrates calling them barbarian was because of war between Athens and Macedonia)

Incidentally modern DNA evidence suggest a substantial number of Greeks are even genetically related. Then of course our modern language is clearly descended from Koine Greek (the official language of the Macedonian empire), and massive aspects of our culture is derived from ancient Greeks.

All historical narratives aside, I know very real racism (against Greeks) is involved when on the one side people call FYROM "Macedonians" (on the basis of self-identification) yet then on the other go on to change their own rules for ancient Macedonians themselves (who self-identified as Greeks for centuries - see ancient Olympics)

@Ostrogothicus If you study history little bit better you see that the modern Greeks took the teritory of Macedonia after the ww1. The majority of the population in that area was Macedonian there were greeks but they were in minority. Thessaloniki was a Macedonian city. When the Turks left Macedonia was devided between Serbia, Bulgaria & Greece. But the Greeks were the only ones that drowe the Macedonian population in exile as well as the Turkish and they replaced it with the Greeks driven away

For one thing there was no one unified "Greece," there were tons of little city-states with a wide variety of governments, from monarchies to democracies to military dictatorships. Philip of Macedon wasn't a barbarian because he was a king, he was a barbarian because he was Macedonian.

Of course everything would have been written down in Greek, Greek was the language of record, and the Greeks considered all other languages barbaric and not worth writing down. So the fact that everything is written in Greek doesn't mean that that was the language that everyone spoke.
