Apartheid is a British invention and started long before 1948. The controversial Pass Laws, a Morality Type Act and shoving people out of towns after dark with bells were all British imposed laws. Apartheid as defined by HF Verwoerd sought to grant all ethnicities homelands where their own culture and identity could be maintained in a spirit of good neighbourliness.

South Africa may have democracy now (which is seriously flawed in itself) but most of the inhabitants are worse off now than ever before. a while back in a BCC documentary, a reporter asked a Black man in South africa if he was happier now that democracy had come. He said he was not. The reporter prompted "But you are free now!". The man said that yes, he was free now, but under apartheid he always had a job and could feed his family!
