the current isn't the issue. the chemicals could cause problems, further more, the vehicle would have to be stabilized before removing it from the water, the tank would need to be sealed. come on, use your brain.
@TSimpson1993 the chemicals dont come out unless you take the cap off first, other wize the distilled water or acid would come out when your off roading, going over humps ect.
if by tank you mean fuel tank, it would have to have to be tight anyway so that it can hold fuel.

the engine, which would need the fuel pump on to bring it to the engine and the injectors open, witch need electricity going threw them to keep them open, and the you need the zorst or the intake open to let the fuel going into the water.
and the other access point is the fuel breather, but because it is not fully upside down water cant get in.

The offside brake caliper was larger than the nearside one, which (apparantly) caused the car to veer to one side under heavy braking. Seems that caused the car to go into the river.

Actually, I do. I regularly spend a lot of time in the mud with green oval owners who've modded their machines. I've done a fair bit of modding to my SJ, and it goes just about anywhere the landies go.

Rovers are too top heavy. That's a given. These things are known for flipping over. Stock Rovers are really not meant to be driven offroad. They're luxury vehicles.

Seatbelts don't save ya from drowning, lol. You gotta act fast when in the water, but I suppose, someone who is quick thinking would avoid the accident in the first place.
The defender was deemed un-roadworthy, there is an article in the landrover monthly magazine about this very accident and the author of it sends out a clear warning about people who mod their landy's and dont have them declared and checked out properly.
The thing is, they did road tests on the land rover after it had been in this crash, with the roof bent out or shape, its not going to handle right after that.
It was NOT illegally modified. They criticised him for fitting a roll cage and making it too top heavy. Of course they failed to mention may Police Land Rovers also have roll cages as do riot vans etc.
The biggest problem was that the kids were in proper child safety seats and couldn't get out. Without a seat belt they would probably have survided.
The vehicle was described as a "deathtrap", what part of that would be structinised by the insurance company underwriter or the police on the basis that only a roll cage had been fitted? He was driving like a prick, with kids in the car that's no excuse, why are you defending him? Are you his brother or summat??

The kids were not in proper "child Seats" they were in harnesses on Bench seats. that is illegal. I see the 2 children that were on the 2nd row seat using STD seatbelts got out. They were trapped in the bench seats at the back because of the seat belts (not standard) that the bloke installed to keep them safe thats what make it so horrible. The police tested the vehicles road worthyness as it had been modified for off roading and it was a suspension problem that caused the 110 to veer off the bank but there must have been more to it than that! The father is being prosecuted for the mods - personally I think he has paid the worst price he could - leave them be!

Ah okay i see what you mean, he modified it on the cheap and in a DIY sort of way much like a chav car. He also somehow managed to get it through an MOT when the front axl was so rotten it was pretty much not part of the chasis anymore. Looking at the seats and the simplicity inside, along with the massive tire and spare tire on top making it like a pendulum this thing should only have been used as an off roading vehicle and NEVER as a family car.
MOT means nothing, its only the minimum requirement to have you car used on the road, the keeper or the user of the car has the full responsibility to ensure the safety level and roadworthiness, and i will double sure if my car is safe enough specially when carrying children.
it passed the mot with the mods though and custom bulk tyres my view is that it was a tragic accident obviously the steering packed in due to the wheels or something related but we all rely on that check if it was an old 1984 capri or morris marina that passed its mot and fit for the road would the father still be accountable cos he was driving a old car it was just a unseen accident if it failed its mot it wouldnt have happened ..so i blame no one

Most of us ended up on this tragic youtube page looking for Landrover "fun" etc. It chills my heart to see what happend. The same thing almost happend to me in the snow up a simple road in Snowdonia 2 years ago with 5 children in my 110 deffender. No one (including my wife knew it but my back end stepped out on a lake) knew it but me and I know how stupid and lucky I was. 1st rule if u want to wade a cross a river: Wade a cross only if it's completely necessary.

Very few Land Rovers - worldwide - of that age are not modified.
I would take what the Telegraph report says with a pinch of salt. In any case, the vehicle presumably satisfied the MOT examiner -but no mention of this from the ever adept Telegraph.

Actually, I do. I regularly spend a lot of time in the mud with green oval owners who've modded their machines. I've done a fair bit of modding to my SJ, and it goes just about anywhere the landies go.
As for taking what the telegraph says with a pinch of salt, that *is* why I said "apparantly".
If what Bones2k7 is true, then he should sue. But don't forget that he *was* convicted of dangerous driving - so it would seem that with/without bad modding, he was still to blame.

You can have the worlds best land rover or any other 4x4 with all the mods and accessories it doesnt make any difference if you can afford it the biggest asset is the person behind the wheel........... so learn how to use a 4x4 before going off thinking your the worlds best driver with all your gear.

they are not top heavy. You take anything down an embankment at an angle and its gonna tip in. Bad driving IMO not the vehicle

@clutchpack1969 ok the guy went to jail. he built the vehicle himself as a amuture mechanic & it had several faults including on the brakes,(front calipers were diferent sizes) . i must also point out that 4 children died, the life suport machines were turned off a couple of days after the crash.There is plenty of info about this story on the net, search Nigel gresham

Rovers are too top heavy. That's a given. These things are known for flipping over. Stock Rovers are really not meant to be driven offroad. They're luxury vehicles.

I'm guessing that this video is the closeset you've ever been to a defender. They are anything but a luxury vehicle. Infact they would be the most featureless car you can possibly buy today. I'm actually suprised they had power steering for as long as they have.

The defender was deemed un-roadworthy, there is an article in the landrover monthly magazine about this very accident and the author of it sends out a clear warning about people who mod their landy's and dont have them declared and checked out properly.

The thing is, they did road tests on the land rover after it had been in this crash, with the roof bent out or shape, its not going to handle right after that.

It was NOT illegally modified. They criticised him for fitting a roll cage and making it too top heavy. Of course they failed to mention may Police Land Rovers also have roll cages as do riot vans etc.
The biggest problem was that the kids were in proper child safety seats and couldn't get out. Without a seat belt they would probably have survided.
A very tragic ACCIDENT!!!

The kids were not in proper "child Seats" they were in harnesses on Bench seats. that is illegal. I see the 2 children that were on the 2nd row seat using STD seatbelts got out. The Father is a prick he was before the crash he still is. I notice he is now trying to blame the poor mother by saying she controlled the purse strings and if they hadn't been off to see her parents the accident wouldn't have happened. What a sad fooking apology for a man he is!! he should have got 20years.

They were trapped in the bench seats at the back because of the seat belts (not standard) that the bloke installed to keep them safe thats what make it so horrible. The police tested the vehicles road worthyness as it had been modified for off roading and it was a suspension problem that caused the 110 to veer off the bank but there must have been more to it than that! The father is being prosecuted for the mods - personally I think he has paid the worst price he could - leave them be!

I can see why this shouldn't be on youtube, but I tell you it really makes me think about the dangers on the road especially with my kids in the car. If this in any way influences someone to drive safer then surely it has had some benifit not to mention saving someones life as a result? As for some of the comments here, it worries me that there are some really sick people in this world. They are so cowardley they make sick comments behind made up names.

Ah okay i see what you mean, he modified it on the cheap and in a DIY sort of way much like a chav car. He also somehow managed to get it through an MOT when the front axl was so rotten it was pretty much not part of the chasis anymore. Looking at the seats and the simplicity inside, along with the massive tire and spare tire on top making it like a pendulum this thing should only have been used as an off roading vehicle and NEVER as a family car.

MOT means nothing, its only the minimum requirement to have you car used on the road, the keeper or the user of the car has the full responsibility to ensure the safety level and roadworthiness, and i will double sure if my car is safe enough specially when carrying children.

it passed the mot with the mods though and custom bulk tyres my view is that it was a tragic accident obviously the steering packed in due to the wheels or something related but we all rely on that check if it was an old 1984 capri or morris marina that passed its mot and fit for the road would the father still be accountable cos he was driving a old car it was just a unseen accident if it failed its mot it wouldnt have happened ..so i blame no one

Most of us ended up on this tragic youtube page looking for Landrover "fun" etc. It chills my heart to see what happend. The same thing almost happend to me in the snow up a simple road in Snowdonia 2 years ago with 5 children in my 110 deffender. No one (including my wife knew it but my back end stepped out on a lake) knew it but me and I know how stupid and lucky I was. I know of two freinds whom have died driving when something silly happend. My heart goes out to their freinds and family
