This is also played by Hendrix at the beginning of Voodoo Chile.....some people will be saying I am wrong, those of you know know Jimi's music will know I speak the truth....
The version goes for 15 minutes and it can be found on Scorsese Presents the Blues :)
The Black Keys are probably the best 'dirty blues'
Have a look at all Fat Possum records stuff. Junior Kimbrough, a big influence on the Black Keys, might float your boat too. His style is very similar to this video.
Cool riff, I just smile when people hear that opening riff and instantly think Jimi Hendrix.
That opening lick is straight Muddy Waters from Rollin Stone(Catfish Blues). Jimi did what every great guitarist before him and since has done... be took it and made it his own.
Learn your pentatonics. 5th fret top string is A and in that key the pentitonic scale goes (from memory) A,C,D,E,G back to A. Blue note is D#. It can be applied to any key in the same step pattern. :D
7th fret top string (or bottom) is B in standard tuning. Apply the same pattern and your playing pentatonic in B. Keep in mind that the scale sounds shit without feeling. And you wont sound good till you can put feeling behind it. Lots of minor second intervals and such.
I am blessed to have a great ear.

sweet looking guitar... what model is it? Awesome riff btw!
Seophiee 9 months ago
@Seophiee It's probably an Epiphone Sheraton II.
GuitarBlues3 9 months ago
@GuitarBlues3 I'm 100% sure it's a sheraton II or maybe an original but I highly doubt that. I recognize it because of the rose on the headstock

He should have given the credit to jimi hendrix he is playing catfish blues.
JimiHendrixSite 2 years ago 4
If anything, he should actually give credit to Muddy Waters. He was the first to use this riff when he made a cover of catfish bles.
