I totally agree with you on all the points you brought up. I especially like your statement about the pressure that's put on the kids here in Germany and the negativity. My daughters teacher is like that and because of that, she always thinks she "failed" or she is "not so smart", she really focuses on her mistakes. It makes me sad :( BTW your channel is AWESOME, and your German is very, very good :))
Ein sehr schönes "statement" und gut zu wissen das Du in der Lage bist die Unterschiede zu sehen, ohne sie zu sehr zu bewerten! Es ist schön, das sich Menschen mit den Unterschieden auseinandersetzen und die andere Seite versuchen zu verstehen! Es hilft auch mir dabei die Aussagen zu beurteilen die ich von meinen Amerikanischen Freunden höre, oder auch darauf ein zu gehen.

@Berlinhairbaby hey ich komm auch aus den staaten :) aus warner robins Georgia ich finde in deutschland ist diese druck in der schule etc viel besser als in den staaten da man so druck aufbaut.... klar es ist nicht immer gut aber man kann so viel mehr ehrreichen :) deutsche sind ebenso das einzige land das ein duales ausbildungs system hat was ich auch besser finde :) und wir sind halt sparsam wir deutsche :) dafür haben wir aber auch durchschnittlich mit am meisten geld :P!

i noticed this "how are you" difference when beeing in england. it always took a while to answer all the "how are yous" there and somehow i always had the feeling they didnt care or didnt want to hear how i am, but then, why ask?!? Until someone told me its just a phrase like goodbye or have a nice day.
I still think its hypocritical to ask if you dont care how someone feels.

I was in California for a student exchange this summer. It really scared me how friendly everyone was! I am not used to this here in Germany. In the US the shop assistants came on to you and asked if they can help you and they get you new clothes if one didn't fit and they ask you how you feel and stuff. In Germany nobody ever came on to me, I always have to ask them. I really enjoyed my time there :))
The cultural diffrences between Poland and Germany are a lot more interessting than the cult. diff. between GER&USA. The USA The US have no culture. Period !
Hi I like your video and I must admit everything you said about us Germans is true. We are stingy, negative and it takes a hell of a long time to make friends. I also don´t have a credit card and prefer to pay cash. We don´t like to make debts unless it´s for something like a house or a car.

Es gibt auch Unterschiede, was Makeup angeht! In Deutschland habe ich noch NIE jemanden mit false lashes gesehen, auch nicht im Club oder zu besonderen Anlässen wie Hochzeit, Silvester etc! Allgemein habe ich das Gefühl, in Deutschland sind die Frauen oder Mädchen weniger verrückt, was Makeup angeht. Viele meiner Freundinnen benutzen überhaupt kein Makeup, nicht einma Mascara oder Foundation. Die sind auch immer geschockt, was ich aus gebe für Makeup.

@BerlinHairBaby - Oh you are soooo right! I'm born in the US from German immigrant parents. We do as the Germans do the way you described it. Whereas Americans are concerned with how much money you make, Germans are concerned with, however much money you make, how much of that money is at your personal disposal to do what you want with. And, I think that is very wise. Relationaships, yes Germans are harder nuts to crack, but you've cracked them, they'll be some of the best friends ever.

I have noticed that I always had friends in Germany, but here in Canada it's so hard making friends. They are all so private and keep to themselves. I'm all confused now:)LOL

hahah ich musste gerade so lachen :) ich war in PA für einen exchange und meine familie hat, als es vorbei war, gesagt : du musst unbedingt wiederkommen like "honey, you can visit us whenever you want ! you're always welcome" and stuff like that. nach 3 monaten wollte ich einen flug in die usa buchen und bei ihnen wohnen :D also hab ich sie angerufen und die mutter war like : "oooh...okay....we didn't expect that..." man darf das alles nicht so ernst nehmen, genau wie du gesagt hast ;)

But that's probably because I want to be good in school, and achieve something in my life, so I'm trying my best to be good in school. That's not because of my parents. Well, I am not an american in Berlin, but I am a foreginer that lives since 2007 here. Germans seem (and are) in general cold people to everyone that comes from outside Germany, I know they do not agree, but it is so. It is nothing personal, they do not realize it because they are raised like this. And let's be honest, they are cheap. Finally every country and its people have positive and negative sides, as long as there are more positive sides I am ok with it (for the moment).
I'm an American and I like to socialize and talkto people..but I don't initiate when talking to stranger. They have to talk tome first..haha..generally I'm inclinced toward positive reinforcemnet

but with the "schnappchen". it is such a great feeling if you save some money, so you can buy even more things ;) i love to look out for schnäppchen.

I'm German (from Berlin as well), but I did spend quite some time in the US, so I can totally relate to what you're saying, especially the part about friendship. I'm always trying to kind of find a way in the middle, between the German and the American way.

I agree with most of what you said :) I am an American who is married to a German too. After 11 years of living here I am still disappointed how the Germans are in general friendly with children, especially in restaurants and grocery stores. Yes, my children are pressured especially in school. My 10 year old is in the Gymnasium which their is a lot of pressure from the teachers.
I do like how clean Germany is, especially their autos and gardens. Thanks for posting your video :)

My mom is from France and my dad from Germany and even between those countrys there are a lot of differences. Only when I think about what is polite here and there. Thanks for the video! I am currently in France visiting the in-laws and as an Australian I am far too laid back and non-food focussed for the French people's liking!! Also learning not to raise any political discussion! Sometimes I feel like a walking faux pas, they have very rigid customs that they cherish and we Aussies tend to be very flexible. It's a learning curve for sure!!

Love that you brought up the "fake' (not heartfelt) invites we give. Would love to see you discuss how it's NOT considered impolite to give an unsolicited opinion to a stranger (like in your "teuer" store). There is simply a right and wrong way and if someone is doing it wrong, it's fine to let them know. I have never been able to rid myself of this German habit which makes me an annoying "know it all" in the US. Positive - you always know where a German stands! Love your tutorials and blog!

It's like that all through Europe. It's the way people are raised and it's the way they're going to raise their children. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it's just a way of living, of seeing life. I am an European and I was raised that way. It comes a time when you learn to put that negative preassure on yourself and that shows, but, here, it's an acceptable, the preferable way even, of handling things.

People have said it's a really difficult language to learn but I find since English is mainly a Germanic language that I hear a lot of similarities. How long did it take you to learn? Of course I'm sure living in Berlin helped a lot! :D

Indeed it depends where you live in Germany. You can be a Hamburger(burger), Frankfurter(saussage), Berliner(jelly-donut) and in Austria you can be a Wiener(saussage)
And when Kennedy held his great speech in Berlin, he openly admitted that he is a jelly-donut! :D

yeah but Jan .. just ask Americans how they feel about immigration and you'll get similar reactions! Look at Arizona, where the new immigration bill allows police to stop people because of how they look or what color they are. That would never in a second be a passable law in Germany. I can honestly say that as a foreigner here I feel very happy and not ostracized at all. I also have a lot of non german, non white, non christian friends in Germany that feel the same way.
@BerlinHairBaby True-AZ does have some stuff going on but it is just a state- and I am hoping not truly representative of the nation. I am of Cherokee descent so I totally understand about exclusionary policies :) I just think in general the US & CN are seen are more perceived to be countries of immigration. Do foreigners tend to live in certain areas? Like urban areas? So glad you are happy there! :)
@Catalina031 well .. according to a poll by cbs (I cant link article in the comment section, otherwise I would) 52% of Americans support that AZ immigration bill. I think its a tricky topic all over Europe right now and compared to other European countries, Germany has a smaller far right movement then any of them...

Da sprichst du wahre Worte. Die Deutschen neigen dazu, häufig zu meckern und negativ zu denken. Uns fallen negative Dinge viel schneller auf und werden eher thematisiert und angesprochen als positive! Egal ob privat oder beruflich. Das stimmt! Mein Freund arbeitet mit Amerikanern zusammen und er meinte gestern, diese überschwängliche Freundlichkeit geht ihm nach der Zeit auf dem Keks! ^^ Ständig positives Denken ist für uns nur schwer zu ertragen! :D

Hello. I am Irish and when I meet American people I find it refreshing how positive they are- generally speaking of course. In Ireland there is a lot of sarcasim and cynicism. Don't get me wrong I am very very proud to be Irish but we do have our barriers up and can be quite suspicious of people before we get to know them. On the flip side, when you make friends with an Irish person it is usually quite a strong solid friendship.
You could've been talking about Belgium as well. I think these things are typically for Northern Europe. On a totally diffrent note: everytime you do a video in German I'm like so impressed and it makes me wonna work on my French (in some weird,twisted way!)

Ich war letztens shoppen und traute mich nicht eine Frau zu fragen, wo sie eine Jacke her hatte, obwohl ich die Jacke total schön fand. In Deutschland ist man sowas und solche Fragen einfach nicht gewohnt.
Oder wenn ich einen neuen Haarschnitt habe, bekomme ich meist nur "Oh, hast du dir die Haare geschnitten?" zu hören. In Amerika käme wohl eher

Bei Erwachsenen kommt ja als allererstes noch das Siezen hinzu. Ich denke, wenn man "Sie" anstatt "du" sagt, ist das bereits die erste Barierre.
Das vermisse ich wirklich. Es ist so einfach neue Leute kennenzulernen in Amerika! Allein schon beim Shoppen zB "Hey, schöne Mütze! Wo hast du die her?" von einer fremden Person.

I totally agree with you on all the points you brought up. I especially like your statement about the pressure that's put on the kids here in Germany and the negativity. My daughters teacher is like that and because of that, she always thinks she "failed" or she is "not so smart", she really focuses on her mistakes. It makes me sad :( BTW your channel is AWESOME, and your German is very, very good :))

When Germans say: " I´m your friend!"- They mean it! Otherwise they wouldn´t say it.
Anglo-Saxons don´t mean it...most of the time.

Es ist schön, das sich Menschen mit den Unterschieden auseinandersetzen und die andere Seite versuchen zu verstehen! Es hilft auch mir dabei die Aussagen zu beurteilen die ich von meinen Amerikanischen Freunden höre, oder auch darauf ein zu gehen.

@Berlinhairbaby hey ich komm auch aus den staaten :) aus warner robins Georgia ich finde in deutschland ist diese druck in der schule etc viel besser als in den staaten da man so druck aufbaut.... klar es ist nicht immer gut aber man kann so viel mehr ehrreichen :) deutsche sind ebenso das einzige land das ein duales ausbildungs system hat was ich auch besser finde :) und wir sind halt sparsam wir deutsche :) dafür haben wir aber auch durchschnittlich mit am meisten geld :P!

i noticed this "how are you" difference when beeing in england. it always took a while to answer all the "how are yous" there and somehow i always had the feeling they didnt care or didnt want to hear how i am, but then, why ask?!? Until someone told me its just a phrase like goodbye or have a nice day.
I still think its hypocritical to ask if you dont care how someone feels.

I was in California for a student exchange this summer. It really scared me how friendly everyone was! I am not used to this here in Germany. In the US the shop assistants came on to you and asked if they can help you and they get you new clothes if one didn't fit and they ask you how you feel and stuff. In Germany nobody ever came on to me, I always have to ask them. I really enjoyed my time there :))

Es gibt auch Unterschiede, was Makeup angeht! In Deutschland habe ich noch NIE jemanden mit false lashes gesehen, auch nicht im Club oder zu besonderen Anlässen wie Hochzeit, Silvester etc! Allgemein habe ich das Gefühl, in Deutschland sind die Frauen oder Mädchen weniger verrückt, was Makeup angeht. Viele meiner Freundinnen benutzen überhaupt kein Makeup, nicht einma Mascara oder Foundation. Die sind auch immer geschockt, was ich aus gebe für Makeup.

@BerlinHairBaby - Oh you are soooo right! I'm born in the US from German immigrant parents. We do as the Germans do the way you described it. Whereas Americans are concerned with how much money you make, Germans are concerned with, however much money you make, how much of that money is at your personal disposal to do what you want with. And, I think that is very wise. Relationaships, yes Germans are harder nuts to crack, but you've cracked them, they'll be some of the best friends ever.

Ich fühle mich ertappt - ich LIEBE Schnäppchen ;-D. Allerdings fahre ich nicht stundenlang dafür durch die Gegend um 1 Euro zu sparen, sondern freue mich einfach, wenn ich für wenig Geld, ganz viele neue Sachen habe.

hahah ich musste gerade so lachen :) ich war in PA für einen exchange und meine familie hat, als es vorbei war, gesagt : du musst unbedingt wiederkommen like "honey, you can visit us whenever you want ! you're always welcome" and stuff like that. nach 3 monaten wollte ich einen flug in die usa buchen und bei ihnen wohnen :D also hab ich sie angerufen und die mutter war like : "oooh...okay....we didn't expect that..." man darf das alles nicht so ernst nehmen, genau wie du gesagt hast ;)

Ich kann nur zustimme Bin in Amerikanischen Chatrooms unterwegs und hab dadurch vorallem viele US Frauen kennengelernt und haben heute noch kontakt.Die waren so offen und locker zu mir das ich schon dachte die verarschen mich weil ich sowas kaum kenne aber die sind halt so und das find ich gut.Und sie sind ganz klar kaum Oberflächlig, ich musste mir noch von keiner anhören das ich scheisse bin oder hässlich was bei deutschen Frauen anders ist.Ich denke zurzeit sehr negativ über deutsche Frauen.

Well, I am not an american in Berlin, but I am a foreginer that lives since 2007 here. Germans seem (and are) in general cold people to everyone that comes from outside Germany, I know they do not agree, but it is so. It is nothing personal, they do not realize it because they are raised like this. And let's be honest, they are cheap. Finally every country and its people have positive and negative sides, as long as there are more positive sides I am ok with it (for the moment).

I agree with most of what you said :) I am an American who is married to a German too. After 11 years of living here I am still disappointed how the Germans are in general friendly with children, especially in restaurants and grocery stores. Yes, my children are pressured especially in school. My 10 year old is in the Gymnasium which their is a lot of pressure from the teachers.
I do like how clean Germany is, especially their autos and gardens. Thanks for posting your video :)

Danke für das tolle Video. Ich wohne auch in Berlin und als Deutsche bin ich natürlich auch auf Schnäppchensuche ^^. Das bekommt man hier irgendwie anerzogen.
Auf der anderen Seite stört mich die Distanz der Menschen schon sehr, aber das ändert sich langsam. Zumindest sind jüngere Menschen (Twens und Teens) schon offener und begabter im SmallTalk.

Thanks for the video! I am currently in France visiting the in-laws and as an Australian I am far too laid back and non-food focussed for the French people's liking!! Also learning not to raise any political discussion! Sometimes I feel like a walking faux pas, they have very rigid customs that they cherish and we Aussies tend to be very flexible. It's a learning curve for sure!!

Love that you brought up the "fake' (not heartfelt) invites we give. Would love to see you discuss how it's NOT considered impolite to give an unsolicited opinion to a stranger (like in your "teuer" store). There is simply a right and wrong way and if someone is doing it wrong, it's fine to let them know. I have never been able to rid myself of this German habit which makes me an annoying "know it all" in the US. Positive - you always know where a German stands! Love your tutorials and blog!

We once had a visitor from the US at our school in Dresden and I asked him to tell us what the Americans think about the Germans and he said: "Whenever you need good quality of technique, you will rely on Germany".

About the negative preassure on kids...
It's like that all through Europe. It's the way people are raised and it's the way they're going to raise their children. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it's just a way of living, of seeing life. I am an European and I was raised that way. It comes a time when you learn to put that negative preassure on yourself and that shows, but, here, it's an acceptable, the preferable way even, of handling things.

@BerlinHairBaby I'm in Portugal and I notice that all through Southern Europe as well. I think it's something that happens everywhere in Europe, with the exception perhaps of Sweden and Norway. Hey, maybe that's why they're better than the rest of us in most (all) ways lol

I love hearing you speak German -- I want to learn it so badly! People have said it's a really difficult language to learn but I find since English is mainly a Germanic language that I hear a lot of similarities. How long did it take you to learn? Of course I'm sure living in Berlin helped a lot! :D

I would love if you could explain how you transitioned into living in another country, especially learning the language! You speak so well in german, I feel like I can understand you based on the way you speak (meaning you are so comfortable with the language). I'm interested in moving to europe, and always fascinated by how people transition into a different cultural environment. Maybe make a part 2?

Du hast mit den Ansichten wirklich recht, ich kann die Eigenschaften der Deutschen nur mit denen der Lateinamerikaner vergleichen, aber ich arbeite am Flughafen und dort erlebe ich wirklich viele Kulturen und ihre Unterschiede! Es witzig und faszinierend! Was ich dazu sagen muss das die Deutschen die im Ausland leben, meist die schlimmsten Manieren haben!

Indeed it depends where you live in Germany. You can be a Hamburger(burger), Frankfurter(saussage), Berliner(jelly-donut) and in Austria you can be a Wiener(saussage)
And when Kennedy held his great speech in Berlin, he openly admitted that he is a jelly-donut! :D

Wir Deutschen sind zu selbstkritisch. Der Leistungsdruck der auf Schulkinder ausgeübt wird, ist aber nochmal eine besondere Geschichte. Da ist unser Schulsystem nicht ganz unschuldig daran. Viele Eltern wollen, dass ihre Kinder das Gymnasium und setzen alles daran. Und wenn man die Einstellungsvoraussetzunge für viele Berufe ansieht versteht man, dass sie nicht ganz Unrecht haben. Eine Mittlere Reife ist bald nichts mehr wert und Hauptschüler sind eh schon abgestempelt.

More than one in 10 Germans polled agreed with the statement that the country needed a "Fuehrer" to rule "with a strong hand," and about a third said foreigners should be sent home when jobs are scarce.

yeah but Jan .. just ask Americans how they feel about immigration and you'll get similar reactions! Look at Arizona, where the new immigration bill allows police to stop people because of how they look or what color they are. That would never in a second be a passable law in Germany. I can honestly say that as a foreigner here I feel very happy and not ostracized at all. I also have a lot of non german, non white, non christian friends in Germany that feel the same way.

@BerlinHairBaby True-AZ does have some stuff going on but it is just a state- and I am hoping not truly representative of the nation. I am of Cherokee descent so I totally understand about exclusionary policies :) I just think in general the US & CN are seen are more perceived to be countries of immigration. Do foreigners tend to live in certain areas? Like urban areas? So glad you are happy there! :)

@Catalina031 well .. according to a poll by cbs (I cant link article in the comment section, otherwise I would) 52% of Americans support that AZ immigration bill. I think its a tricky topic all over Europe right now and compared to other European countries, Germany has a smaller far right movement then any of them...

Da sprichst du wahre Worte. Die Deutschen neigen dazu, häufig zu meckern und negativ zu denken. Uns fallen negative Dinge viel schneller auf und werden eher thematisiert und angesprochen als positive! Egal ob privat oder beruflich. Das stimmt! Mein Freund arbeitet mit Amerikanern zusammen und er meinte gestern, diese überschwängliche Freundlichkeit geht ihm nach der Zeit auf dem Keks! ^^ Ständig positives Denken ist für uns nur schwer zu ertragen! :D

Wunderbares Video! Ich schicke es gerade an alle meine deutschen und amerikanischen Freundinnen in den USA! Habe dort auch die letzten Jahre gelebt und Du triffst den Nagel auf den Kopf!!! Worüber man auch noch reden könnte: Parkplätze, Einkaufswagenchips, Aufzugunterhaltung, Komplimente, Höflichkeit im Strassenverkehr....

Hello. I am Irish and when I meet American people I find it refreshing how positive they are- generally speaking of course. In Ireland there is a lot of sarcasim and cynicism. Don't get me wrong I am very very proud to be Irish but we do have our barriers up and can be quite suspicious of people before we get to know them. On the flip side, when you make friends with an Irish person it is usually quite a strong solid friendship.

Das würde in Deutschland nicht so schnell passieren. Generell finde ich, dass die Deutschen sehr sparsam mit Komplimenten sind. :/
Ich war letztens shoppen und traute mich nicht eine Frau zu fragen, wo sie eine Jacke her hatte, obwohl ich die Jacke total schön fand. In Deutschland ist man sowas und solche Fragen einfach nicht gewohnt.
Oder wenn ich einen neuen Haarschnitt habe, bekomme ich meist nur "Oh, hast du dir die Haare geschnitten?" zu hören. In Amerika käme wohl eher

sind nicht wirklich entstanden. Ich denke es kommt auch sehr auf das Alter an. Ich denke das Kinder bis etwa 25 Jahre sehr viel leichter Freunde finden und offener sind. Bei Erwachsenen kommt ja als allererstes noch das Siezen hinzu. Ich denke, wenn man "Sie" anstatt "du" sagt, ist das bereits die erste Barierre.
Das vermisse ich wirklich. Es ist so einfach neue Leute kennenzulernen in Amerika! Allein schon beim Shoppen zB "Hey, schöne Mütze! Wo hast du die her?" von einer fremden Person.
