  • I don't know why this guy is soo stupid to put win 7 on Mac oh well not my problem it's not my Mac XD

  • How to make dualboot OS X Lion and Windows 7?

  • @thecomputerman0001 In bootcamp, download the windows drivers, partition the drive then restart. When it restarts, it then should go to the installation screen after a few seconds from it turning on so make sure your disk drive is connected or you have you memory stick inserted with the windows 7 installation files (memory stick only works with the 2011 model, not 2010 MBA or older. You have the option to make this memory stick in the bootcamp menu).

  • can i remove osx lion and reinstall osx snowleopard 10.6

  • Perfect, just what i was looking for thank you very much for posting! (...now to get rid of my clients Apple OS).

  • hi, I just bought a macbook air 2011. I am running windows install off external DVD drive.

I get a problem at partition at around 8 mins into your video. Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 1. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's bios menu.

  • I have a legal key of Win7 but, I can't get a download of a iso to work.( i bought the key $80 at Walmart) i have a lack of funds so i cannot buy the cd. I have been trying to us the usb method but it does not show or give me the ability to check or click it. Anything at this point would would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • great video, thanks a bunch! i have one quick question for you. this is my first experience installing windows 7 on a macbook, but i have done this operation countless times with windows-based laptops and desktops. at the drive partitioning stage, i always just highlight the partition, click new, format, and then next and it works fine. is it absolutely necessary to pull up the command prompt as you do and manually set the new partition? i'm just wondering if there is any added benefit? thx

  • What external drive do you have, will it work with the macbook pro?

  • @erickthetechie - Any external drive that doesn't attempt to load it's own controlling software on your PC should work just fine.

  • do it work fine on 11 inch

  • @mczacify - As you can see in the video, it does. This was done on my 11" 2011 MBA. I've had no problems since. Everything is just like day one.

  • I've been looking at videos of windows on mac and one thing I have noticed is that in these videos, the keyboards on the Air have writing on the buttons. For example the 'tab' button actually has 'tab' written on it. And whereas the command button has 'command' written on it, mine just has 'cmd'. I have got the 2011 model can someone tell me why this is cuz im confused.

  • wait, is this to partition the disk so it runs windows 7 and mac os x, or fully install windows 7 and get rid of mac os x?

  • @all: During the installation process make sure that you mute your macbook as long as lion is bootable. If you mute the audio the annoying start sound won't be played even after lion is wiped out and it is starting win 7. The first time i did this installation i had it on max volume and the start sound could not been muted under win 7. I wiped everything again, installed lion again and went through the installation process having the MBA muted. That's how i got rid of the annoying start sound.

  • @lmpmathis - Great tip. Thanks!

  • @robinm44in: Just follow the Video and let the boxes within bootcamp checked to installe win7 on a seperate partition. Be sure to choose an appropiate size. and if you're buying one consider to take one with 256 GB just to be on the safe side.

@osito010493: you will always need a licensed win 7 copy. You can choose to install either via CD oder thumbdrive. I suggest using a thumbdrive because it's faster and not every external dvd drive works.

  • You accent is so much nicer to listen to then the other videos :)

  • @Spencerrocks222 - Ummm... thanks.

  • @iphone4au can u please tell me why you deleted your mac os lion & then installed windows 7 on the system.

i am interested in buying a macbook air & installing windows 7 on a different partition.

can you please tell me what to do for that....

  • @robinm44in - I don't support Mac OS so I can't help you with that, sorry...

  • Why did you wipe out Lion?

I don't mind putting Windows 7 on my Mac, I'm using youtube trying to figure out how to do so without having the Mac OS install DVD, but deleting Lion seems suicidal to me.

  • @Nintendid - Each to their own. It's like asking Steve Jobs why he let Microsoft help save Apple when it was nearly bankrupt. And then again, why Apple ditched Motorola and went to Intel...

  • @iPhone4au I agree with you there. I'm trying to find out if I need an actual disc/USB for OS Lion to maintain it while boot camping, do I need one?

Also, do you just put the Windows7 Iso on the USB/Harddrive and connect it to the Mac while installing Windows and the PC reads it like a CD?

  • what happens if a let marked the option that says create win 7 install disk?? i would NOT need to buy the win 7 disc and all that?? or how is it?? thanx

  • would this also work for my macbook pro?

  • Guys,if you need to put windows 7/the boot camp drivers in it,you have to get a specific type of thumbdrive...which I forgot what it's called...hmph...pm me..I'll try to find out

  • Great video that totally matches my concern about installing Seven on my MBA.

My question is: what about updating the bootcamp drivers once installed in Seven.

ie: if new drivers for the trackpad are published, will it possible to install them ?

Normally, you have to do this through Lion. But Lion is wiped out.

How to solve this issue ?

  • @JustaDetail - Not sure... Apple should write Win7 supported updates for this as well.

  • I finally found the solution for the prolem described in my last post. Just buy a couple of usb sticks and try them. I first tried with a sony 8 gb, after a second one... finally i went to next electronic supermarket and bought an external dvd drive and the cheapest thumb drive i could find. the dvd drive didn't work but the cheapest thumb drive did... what an irony

  • After watching your videos about the installation process and the using of win7 on the MBA I decided to buy one. But I have a last question. In the Apple recovery menu at the bottom right (4:30) you can see the disk size in bytes (121'332'826'112) so this would be in Megabytes (through (1024 x 1024))=115'712. During the Windows installation process you're using the cmd window and diskpart to partition to 113'000. Has this a reason or can i set the size to 115'712? thx in advance.

  • @lmpmathis - yes, you can use "115000" to use the full free space. I was interupted during the first run of videoing this bit, and had to redo it. The second time, it would only allow me to use 113000.

Hope this helps, and thanks for watching! :-)

  • @iPhone4au Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately I got a huge problem. Everything worked fine (even the size 115000) while following your tutorial. But after partitioning and so on with diskpart windows won't install on the disk. The setup says: This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk, ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in computer's Bios menu. I have no idea how to make the partition bootable (i thought it will work with marking it as active). Help is appreciated

  • how do you make an ISO of the windows CD? on a macbook air??

  • @s3xydaviid google to download the iso files of all available ms win7 versions directly and free from microsoft. e.g: offical win7 iso download

  • I don't understand one thing... For example i don't have the official copy of Windows 7, but instead a downloaded torrent. Do i put the torrent on the usb, then create a windows 7 iso image, or does it create itself? please respond. thank you

  • @s3xydaviid - I can't help you with bootleg copies of Windows, sorry. Do the right thing and buy a licenced copy for $159.

  • Comment removed

  • @iPhone4au Why would you want to fully wipe osx and replace with windows 7 pc operating systems are to dam expensive to buy them and they get viruses but you dont see a cheap operating system such as osx getting any i love windows 7 but i think thats just plan stupid to fully wipe and tell him to buy a legit copy for 159$

  • Love the video. Easy to follow and it actually works. For those of you who dont want to use the CD drive:

    1) Create an ISO of your Windows 7 CD. I used Power Iso (7min total)

    2) Get a USB drive thats at least 4GB in size and download a program called "Windows 7 USB download utility"

    3) The program is easy to follow just select your ISO and copy to USB using the above software. DONE. Press C when MAC OSX reboots with the USB plugged in. Everything else is the same as the video above.

  • hi, i want to buy a MA the new model of 2011 can you pelase tell me the battery really last as long as long as apple sais 5 h for 11 inch and 7 h for 13 inch? Please i want to buy one and i dont want to find out that it will not last that long

  • Very helpful video. Do you happen to know how to disable the start up mac chime though?

  • sir...i dont have DVD ROOM..but i have windows 7 in my usb flash drive,,i want to install using it...any tips....?..plz reply....thanks advanced,....

  • This is exactly the video i was looking for, thanks. One question: Is it possible to do Full Disk Encryption with True Crypt if i set up the MBA the way you did?

  • @mattp38452 - I'm sorry, I can't answer that.

  • i use snow leopard on my macbook pro and nothing in lion makes me "WANT" to upgrade. but im planing on buying a macbook air like this one and install wndows 7 to it. but for those that didnt knw, u can install it without a dvd-rom. just use a usb stick and click alt on start up and choose the usb drive. thx man

  • nice video!

  • I just have one question for anyone who has done this ,, How does the Graphics perform? Obviously you got to install Driver accelerator for you PC (mac). how did you manage to do that ?

  • @josimar777 - the Graphics perform exactly as Intel HD 3000 graphics would on any other i5 mobile chip in any other notebook. Just fine. It's a complete myth that things run slower in Windows on MBA's (unless of course, you're running it on an emulator like Parallels or VMWare etc).

Just make sure you download the BootCamp software USING MAC OSX and then save that to a USB stick BEFORE you wipe your MBA to install Windows.

  • @javier29m90

well then you might as well buy a small computer for 400 bucks and get the same stuff. >.>

  • I mean no offence or anything. But why exactly would you completely dump OS X Lion and just run Windows on a Macbook Air? :p I'm quite curious.

  • Do you have problems when you update the windows partition of the macbook air?

Ive got teh intel core2 duo version 13 inch...faster then expected still is pretty sweet...

Just need windows 7 on it because i want to game...certain games of course..

Im going with win7 Pro 32 bit...only have 4 gigs anyways why put 64 bit and eat space and such? it supports both architectures so going with 32 bit..

Like stated updates a problem under teh windows side on the mac?

  • guys, you don't need to run msdos console, click to erase disk and then create, setup will be create needed 100mb partition. you don't need a dvd-rom, press alt when macbook startup and you see usb-flash to install windows 7.

  • @s7eepz - If you want to avoid having the installation make a 100mb partition before the useable OS partition, and just have the whole lot installed under the one partition, you need to do the CMD prompt and diskpart.

    Thanks for watching ! :-)

  • is there any chance someone reading this has a copy of bootcamp 4.0 I bought my air wiped and I just need the windows drivers. any help would be great. Thanks

  • Another great video. I had no idea you could change the OS on a mac. I use VMware on my IMac to run Win7 but plan to leave Lion on my air book.

  • why would i buy a macbook air then put windows on it! madness

  • @bajbaje best hardware + best firmware. why ppl dont get it ?

  • What a sin

  • Hi mate... I have installed win 7 on Mac and it is working smoothly... But I am having problem with identifying some of the keys.. Is there a way to type letters with accents (à è ì ò ù) and hash tag key??

  • can a usb stick be used instead of the cdrom?

  • @MegaCoreMagnetizer yes. there is no optical drive in mac air.

  • hey i am considering getting a macbook air and i notcied you have an 11 inch, how is the samll screen i cant decide weather or not to save more and get the 13 inch or the 11

  • where i can download the file inside your usb?...plz reply..tnx

  • @katuro16 - What file are you referring to? If you mean the Win7 drivers, you must download them under BootCamp in Mac OSX Lion FIRST before wiping the MacBook Air to install Win7.

  • I had to re-install win7 today :(

  • Hi, I tried to do this. As soon as I want to boot with Windows 7 Installation Disk I get a black screen... Can someone help me? I did everything as shown in the video. I see the blinking cursors and after that the black screen appears (that's where the "press any key to..." should be shown.

  • whats the system rating??

  • hi mate, is it possible to reinstall Mac OSX Lion using the Recovery Mode after this installion process?

  • @drinuify - Yes it is. Even if everything is completely wiped, it has a Boot menu option built in that will download what it needs to reload Mac OS X Lion.

  • Is it legal ?

  • @TheEazyXD - of course it's legal. I just purchased a licensed DVD of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and registered via the Product Key. 97% of people wouldn't buy these if they couldn't run Windows on them - because OSX is only compatible (at best) with 3% of software packages available in the world.

If you like something with a really good build quality that can run Windows perfectly with no issues (people are really surprised at just how well Windows runs on it - it flies!), then why not get one ?

  • @iPhone4au dude.. its a great video but why did you choose to create the partition by command prompt.. you could have easily created the partition directly by clicking on new partition which will format ntfs in default.. then you could have saved 2.5gb which is useless now for you.. anyways use some partition manager like paragon and merge up that 2.5gb to your primary partition...:)

    cheers...

  • @jaykayvenom - Installing Win7 without doing the partition steps will create a 100MB partition for system files as well as making another partition for Windows 7 (which becomes C:\).

The 2.6GB left over didn't happen the first time I made it (which wasn't shown here - I had to re-shoot that bit due to other reasons). It actually used the whole space originally.

  • @iPhone4au actually that 100MB is a recovery partition which is used during system failure.. and that partition will not be mounted during normal boot up.. anyways.. good work mate...

  • @jaykayvenom - Sorry, yes you are right. Thanks for your comments - glad you liked it!

  • wild...Based on that I tried a few things: I tried a samsung SE-S084D/TSBS (the original one I started with - 2cords), an LG model, and an Apple MBA dvd drive. Neither the samsung nor apple would load the Acronis disk, the LG did. The samsung wouldn't even load the Win7 install disk - all loaded the ShadowProtect. Anyway, looks like I either had a bad unit or there's a fimware issue. In any case, it's all GOOD...Slicker than deer guts on a doorknob! Good on ya, as they say!

  • After many attempts to get the recovery disk to boot, I finally ended up purchasing ShadowProtect. Spendy, but I was able to create a backup image, wiped the C drive, and completely restored from an image created on my thumbdrive. Worked beautifully. One note, Optical drive needs to be plugged into RIGHT USB port, Thumbdrive in left port, else the CD won't boot. Anyway, for what it's worth, it's all working!! THANKS AGAIN!

  • Thanks for the response! Anyone considering this needs to know this procedure as outlined works like a charm! I now have the best Windows 7 Laptop in the world thanks to you! One point...I've used Acronis for years for image backups, and it did install and run, but when I tried to actually rebuild the system (as a test) I found I was unable to boot from the Acronis recovery CD. Have you actually accomplished this?

  • @curtisp00 - I had no problems getting my Samsung External USB DVD-ROM (Model: SE-S084) to boot Acronis 2011 True Image Home for re-imaging my Macbook Air...

I have found that some External USB DVD-ROM devices will work while others won't (for example, I also have a LaCie - which wouldn't work at all, but was fine on another ASUS Netbook).

If it has two USB 'Y' connectors at one end, plug the other connector into another port also so it can get the extra power it may need to operate properly.

  • Great video...EXACTLY what I was looking for. however, in making the transition to a full win7 environment, I have a concern about making image backups in case of a catastrophic failure. So, several questions if you have the time...

1 - are you creating image backups now?

    2 - How? what tool?

    3 - familiar with Acronis?

4 - if I need to restore from a boot cd, how do I get the mac to boot from an optical drive, or will it even?

5 - OR, what is a good restore method?

    THANKS

  • @curtisp00 - For image backups I have been using Acronis True Image Home 2011 with the added Universal Restore feature (a little extra, but worth it). If you need to restore from a boot CD (Acronis will let you make a boot ISO), you hold down the 'C' key to boot from an optical device (ie: External USB DVD-ROM).

Not all external USB DVD-ROM devices will work - you need to find one that will, and ideally it should have a 'Y' splitter USB connecter on one end (one for extra power for the unit).

  • 11:33, what a beautiful thing

  • Hi thanks for this, I've got a new macbook air 2011 and got rid of lion. I love the hardware but prefer Windows 7 :)

  • @iPhone4au Great Video, Thanks for creating it. I was wondering whether it would be possible to install Windows 7 from an ISO on a Thumbdrive as opposed to pressing C on startup and running it from an external DVD drive. I'm a student and I'm hoping to buy the MBA and this might be the solution to my program compatibility issues, though I'm hoping I could save some money by not purchasing an external drive.

  • @nkartikeyan - some other people have reported that they have had success now using the Win7 ISO on USB option from the new Disk Utilities menu on the new Macbook Airs.

Hope it works for you if you try that option !

  • @iPhone4au Thanks will do. I was looking for a good thin and light and reasonably priced windows laptop (x220 sounds promising but extremely expensive in my country) looks like MBA are the only affordable thin and light options with fast SSDs

  • Thanks for this, very helpful!

But just a quick question - why did you leave some unpartitioned space on the SSD? Does Boot Camp need a small FAT partition or something?

  • @Thunderax - The first time I did this it actually used the whole amount with no problem, but I had to re-shoot that bit, so I wiped the partition and tried to start again - which then left a couple of GB's free for some reason. It should work fine in using the whole amount the first time you do it, I think. Note that I didn't use Boot Camp while in OS X Lion - I only installed the Boot Camp driver package AFTER installing Windows 7. It installs drivers for ALL apple devices I think...

  • That's insane... Who would buy a Mac to wipe out Mac OS X and install Windows?!

  • @nikito122 - Many Mac users need Windows to do things, and many run both on their Macs. This video is for those who want to learn how to install Windows on their new Jully 2011 Macbook Airs...

  • @iPhone4au Wouldn't it be easier to use the BootCamp assistant?

  • @nikito122 - Boot Camp assistant, I believe is if you want to partition the drive to Dual-boot. I didn't want OS X Lion - I just wanted Windows 7 only on it.

  • @nikito122 - Someone who appreciates the great build quality, doesn't use OS X Lion, and just wants to install Windows 7.

  • @nikito122 Because the Mac OS sucks, it really is horrible, it's for dummies, Windows is the more advanced better OS.

  • @relent107luke hater gonna hate

  • @nikito122 at work I use nothing but OSX, and at home I use nothing but Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. I'm not hatin', I'm just telling the truth, Windows is the better OS.

  • @relent107luke I respecto your opinion, but I'd like you to give me some reasons why Windows is better than OSX. Do you use a Mac at home, or do you own an Acer/DELL/HP/IDK PC?

  • @nikito122 For one, Windows is compatible with a HECK of a lot more software then Mac is. And everything for Windows is cheaper then mac. Including the computers themselves. Windows is a more user friendly and all around better looking OS, and there's a lot more accessories you can get for it. My computer, I custom built. (which is another thing you can't do with a mac, you have to buy it from the store) mine is: Core i7 2600k 3.4GHz, 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3, HD 6970 2GB, 120GB Intel SSD + 4.3TB of HD

  • @relent107luke you have to be kidding me! you can criticize Mac, you can criticize Windows, that I don't care, but you can't say, and that's for sure, that windows is more user friendly that mac.. there's so many things wrong with windows! I'm not saying that's a shitty OS, heck, I've got one Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 installed... but there are many things that make Mac OS X not only a better OS, but also a much more user-friendly one!

sorry for my bad english, I'm from spain and I'm 16

  • @nikito122 Oh you're only 16, that explains a lot :-) See I've been building computers for years, and you don't quite get the full Windows experience from bootcamp, because it's sort of still running on the mac os. You have to do like the guy in this video just showed and wipe it, or just get a nice Windows computer. That's one thing with Windows, is you have to have a nice computer to run it, but once you do, all those problems go away, I've had a flawless 2-3 years with my Windows 7

  • @relent107luke I'm 16 and I don't have much experience with PC's, but I've had a few PC's (with Windows, obviously) and they gave me many headaches...I'm sure you haven't got any problems with your Windows 7, I didn't have any problems with Windows Vista either, but compared to Mac OS X it was... well, not as good!

You know, I've only "hard-reseted" my Mac once or twice? And I don't have that constant fear to get infected with a virus, I don't have all the registries, the HDD doesn't fragmentate

  • @nikito122 Yup, you're a typical mac user. :-) You just haven't used a good Windows yet
