I LOVE SHA-NA-NA!!! PLEASE PUT THE SHOWS ON DVD, ASAP!!! TONS OF PEOPLE WANT YOU TO!!! I'VE ALWAYS LOVED SHA-NA-NA, AND WOULD LOOK FORWARD TO THEIR SHOWS EVERY WEEK! TOTALLY DIG THE GOLD OUTFITS!
WHERE CAN I GET A JACKET LIKE THAT? YOU GUYS ALL HAD GREAT VOICES!
YORK999-- I wasn't part of the group when Grover left and they found Johnny, but they asked me to come back and instruct him in my songs and dance routines. I must say I was really impressed. I thought he would be perfect for the group--and he sure was.
Merseymichael -- Grover was my first replacement, Johnny Contardo my second. I helped train Grover to take over my songs and dance routines, etc, and then the group called me back to teach Johnny my stuff after Grover and the group parted ways. I did the death songs, as you noted, and the spoken part in Little Darlin' (My darlin I neeed you...). Couple other bass parts, too. -- Rob
@Bwanasinema Rob-it must be a few years since I sent you that grainy vhs tape of the unseen woodstock footage-Nice to see some of it is finally being released in clear dvd format-if I come across anything new I will be in contact. Thanks for your prompt answer...............regards Mike
To the PRE TV SHOW members of Sha Na Na - You were a fine group and more authentic at the time than the original acts out there. Saw you guys at DAR Constitution Hall in DC in '74. Great show. Watched your guitar player fall off the stage not all that long before he died . Unfortunately, TV turned the band into some sort of parody of itself. If one could parody a parody................
@Bwanasinema Crescent, I left because--well, the immediate catalyst was that I got a full fellowship, through to my PhD, at Columbia, and I knew that if I followed the music career for even a few years I would never be able to come back and finish the PhD. But that alone wouldn't have been enough (continued).
@Bwanasinema All around us friends were dying of overdoses. Jimi, Janis--our own lead guitarist died of an overdose. I wanted to get out alive, I think. My linguistics took me all over the world researching languages (8 years in Africa and Asia) and I just started the first US grad program in forensic linguistics. I (almost) never regretted leaving the group.
@Bwanasinema You had a great voice. You talked about your lead guitarist taking an overdose. I saw Sha Na Na in concert one day after he died. I was just curious was it your recommendation that Johnny Contardo replaced you? Thank you for your time.
WOW! Rob Leonard, I never knew this footage was around, loved the Canada footage on YouTube as well! I have all the Sha Na NA albums and was curious to why you quit so soon? Thanks for sharing your opinions! Take Care!
Dear Old Coot, I am the singer, Rob Leonard. I plead guilty to being wildly off key. We spent the whole night --till 7AM-- on stage waiting to go on. With that and the dense pot smoke cloud from the cameramen, I was lucky I could sing at all! In the studio it was easy to stay on key, of course, but since we tried to sound like we believed what we were singing, lyrics like (think about it) "They buried you today " were SUPPOSED to sound pained and offkey.
@Bwanasinema: This is what I LOVE about You Tube. Heck, I chatted with Peter Fonda on here about the hicks in the diner scene of "Easy Rider" and asked him if they were actually cool with him and Dennis Hopper. They were. And here I see you Rob 40 years ago (well now entering 41) and you're on here explaining how this performance went down. I absolutely loved this when I first saw it on the DVD. Thanks for entertaining us then and now. What'd you think of the other acts that night?
Matt, We were amazed to be walking around with them. Remember, we were college kids, a couple of months before we had played nowhere, and all of a sudden we're with Jimi and the biggest groups in the world. But once things started being delayed way past midnight it got wearing. I remember watching Blood Sweat and Tears tuning up endlessly (warning up perhaps?) and thinking "I didn't even know you COULD tune horns!" It's funny how fast you can get used to used to being around big stars.
Good performance Rob Leonard, lots of emotions, the audiences are giddy watching it. This footage is better than the one that made the movie, it's clearer and have more close ups.
@Bwanasinema Hey Rob! At least you can say you were there. The monitor systems back then were for shit. I know from personal experience. Be proud of your part in history.
@Bwanasinema sha na na at woodstock how amazing!! What a great time for expression, and great music, I allways tell the young ones.....Sha na na was at woodstock!!!
@Bwanasinema were all the hippies pissed off that a bunch of greaser look alikes and stuff were there? or did they like remembering the better days of rock lol
@RoninAvenger No way were they pissed, they loved it, people in the late sixties. early seventies were very nostalgic for the music of the fifties, just like in the nineties we were nostalgic for the seventies, just like today they are nostalgic for the eighties

Damn man, could you be more off key? I love Sha Na Na and I think the line-up right after this, on the "golden age of Rock and Roll" album is the absolute best. check out "Bruno " Clarke on bass and you will hear perfection. I don't know whether they ditched this horrible singer or he quit , but good riddance to bad rubbish!
I like his voice to be honest.. Especially considering the fact that they did do most of their songs very tounge in cheek ;) (And there's a studio version of him singing this on youtube, so.. check that out)
Perhaps he wasn't having such a good day since he had been standing in the rain all night waiting to get on stage. Anyways, he and a bunch of this line-up quit later to finish their university studies.
Well, I checked out the studio version, and I admit its a thousand times better than this, but it seems he's off key on the line "They buried you today " on that too. Or, maybe its just the piss-poor hearing of an old man. At any rate, I love Sha na na and I wish there was more music like this around these days. Being an oldie, I love oldies.
I just got my DVD box set this week and I must say this is absolutely one of my favorite segments of the bonus footage! I had to watch it again tonight only a few hours before I tried to find it on here and see if anyone had uploaded it yet! However this song isn't going to be included on the Woodstock audio box set that's coming out in August, that disappointed me!
Yep, there's "Evil Ways" which was the second song of their set. The new 6-CD audio box set contains "Persuasion" which is KILLER! And the audio box set has Sha Na Na's opening number "Get A Job."
wow...really?
