I love this version of Act 2 opening it was rumored years ago that a broadway revival to open with the 29 mins of cuts restored back in the show. i just like this is feels more 1970s
I wished they filmed the original OBC and put it out on DVD. I've heard an urban legend that the original OBC of "DreamGirls" was in fact professionally filmed but the only copy remains in the library or congress.
@Sox575 Some say they did....it was sold in Gold Metel(i think that was the name)books up until the early 90's.....but now it just sit in the library....the only people who can view it is people who are putting on a professional production of DG....
I'm pretty sure the cast of the movie were allowed to check it out.
@babyboi1002 I hope one day the powers that be will release it. I just saw the revival @ the Ahmanson Theater at the end of Feb, and that cast was pretty good, but I would love for the OBC! Thanks for posting this up, though! I love it! :-)
Could you post the original Act II Press Conference? I've always wanted to see how it was staged and why Michael Bennett decided to cut it from the show.
I don't know why he cut it...the only reason I can think of is the fact that it gives too much on Lorrell and Jimmy's relationship(after all,it suppose to be a secret)...other than that....it was better
I actually prefer the updated LA act 2 opening. I saw it after they'd incorporated into the Broadway show and was blown away by it. I'm dying to see it again. No one believes me when I say how Deena threw her arms in the air and all 3 were hoasted out of the scene. How she kept her balance still astounds me.
At the end of the song, the Dreams were on the top platform/bridge when, Lorrell and Michelle each held on to a cable with 1 hand and Deena was in the middle and threw her arms up and held them up as the bridge rose to the ceiling. That's how they exited the scene. That takes skill to keep your balance especially while wearing heels. If someone has video of it, please let me know!
there had to be some way she was supported, even though she probably could have balanced without it they most likely had something in case of a mishap. dead deena would make the show much less fun.
@youndatmonkee I saw it in the Spring of 1985. I can recall reading an interview with Sheryl Lee Ralph saying that Bennett was putting in a new dance number in Act 2 for her a year or 2 earlier.
@cabupa I totally agree... I wish they did the 2nd version of the Act II opening, then add the Press Conference reprise and put this medley in with "I'm Somebody"... Start out with them singing "I'm Somebody" and have them do "move/Love Love You Baby/Family/Heavy and Cadillac Car then turn back into "I'm Somebody" as the ladies go int to silhouette for the backstage concert confrontation. Deena's silver and blue gown and the girls gold, bronze and blue gowns were totally waisted, IMHO!
@babyboi1002 I know, Isn't crazy that the dresses that are shown on the Cast Album, the Playbill and etc. are used for a matter of seconds in silhouette? It took me a while to figure it out.

I love seeing the original of Act II.
I still wish I could see the "updated" Act II from the Los Angeles cast (Linda Leilani Brown as Deena)

what part of the show is this in?! Is it right after the opening number of Act II? I love this but it is so new to me!
cabupa 2 years ago
It IS the opening number of Act 2....this is the original opening....right before the Press Conf. part 2
babyboi1002 2 years ago
Thanks! I actually like this opening better than the one that is used now. It would be even hotter if they combined the 2!
