  • Top causes for blowing a speaker:

    a) Using a higher wattage amp than the speakers rated wattage will fry the voice coil

    b) Miscalculating speaker wattage ratings by mixing peak power, DIN power, music power etc. with an RMS rated amplifier. They are not the same scale!!!

    c) Using an isolation cab with the amp cranked up will fry the speaker coil through lack of ventilation and overheating

    d) Overdriving an amp by incorrect wiring of multiple speakers to a single amp output

  • Thats a great build..

    good job man!

    Post some recordings dude :o)

  • Looks pretty good man. Can I ask where you got the XLR and 1/4 plates? Would you mind linking me? Thanks a lot buddy

  • SoundcoreRecords, you need to make sure that the speaker can breath, hence the design of Rivera's Silent Sister. Or at least have a cab that is large enough for the speaker to move air, if you are not going to vent it. If the design is too tight around the speaker, the speaker coil will over heat.

  • It looks very good to me. Dude can I ask a question, is there any way I can connect a marshall 1912 cab to a stereo Line 6 Spider IV 150 head. Line 6 say both 75W outputs need to be connected to 8ohm loads. Is there any way I can modify the Marshall to make it work with the Spider IV head? Thanks

  • I built one back in the 80s based on the one Alan Holdsworth had built for himself at the time. (He lived in an apartment then). I made a top lid for mine and had a baffle that could slide in and out allowing for a quick speaker change in case you wanted to use something else. Worked like a charm.

  • Where did you get the foam?

  • "Where did you get the foam?"

I just used some old carpet. Works just as well.

  • wow, thats really great man, DIY all the way !

  • Dude. Like it.

Was there a sample of the sound of this creation? I'd love to hear how that thing sounds?

    FM

  • dude that's fresh...

  • I build a isolation box..and put a greenback speaker in their..I ran my fender blues deville into the speaker and it blew within 20 minutes..any idea what went wrong?

  • Not sure. You have to make sure that the ohm's match and that you are not over powering the speaker from the deville. Hope that helps.

  • @EJHDad if he wired it wrong and under impeded it than it would most likely fuck up his amp aswell, so it probably blew from over powering it or a wiring fault

  • speaker may have been rated at lower wattage handling than the amp

yeah the amp is 60 watts and the speaker is rated for 25... thats why there are normally 4 speakers

  • @SoundcoreRecords as porbly replied to you. the green speaker was a lower wattage than the amps output... overloading the speaker + the Ohms. example 60watt amps use 100watt speakers. 100w 4x12 use 4 75w/100w speakers. to be safe always go up one level of wattage over the amps output or half on 4x12 cabs

  • ohhh ok. thanks guys...so basically i should just get a 100w speaker to be safe..?

  • @SoundcoreRecords more important than the whattage, is the impedance mate, if your amp head requires an 8ohm speaker, then put in an 8ohm, if you under ohm it, you will damage the speaker very easily and more than likely damage your amp due to overheation. hope this helped mate

  • @SoundcoreRecords How did the speaker break? Did the voicecoil loosen from the cone? (You would hear a scratchy noise when pressing the speaker) or did the cone break? If one of these two is the case its probably because the air pressure in the box gets too high. When the box is small and closed on both sides of the speaker, a relatively high pressure occurs in the box.

  • @SoundcoreRecords

Yeah, you ran a Blues Deville into a Greenback...

  • @SoundcoreRecords You ran a 60 watt amp into a 25 watt speaker. You probably fried the speaker which , in turn, fried your output tranny...

  • @SoundcoreRecords

Hey man, greenback speakers are only rated 25w. A blues deville is 65w and can often go higher than that due to tube power. You are putting over 2x the rated wattage through the greenback and poof!

  • @otasty

Totally agree dude. couple that with a cranked up amp into an isolation box with no ventilation and that greenback sucker ain't gonna last - even if the power ratings/impedances etc. were matched.

If you are going to put a speaker in an isolation box, always over-rate the speaker by 2x or under-rate the amp by 2x. minimum i.e. 50W rms speaker with a 25w rms amp. Never the other way round!

  • That's awesome!

    murphycabs . com

  • Not as awesome as your cabs! Those are beautiful. Give me some prices. I'd be interested...Endorsements? Lemme know Murph!

  • Hey! Thanks! No endorsements to speak of, but we haven't had any complaints yet, thanksfully! *crosses fingers* We can do just about anything you want. $239.99 for head $239.99 for an unloaded cab or $419.99 for the combo plus whatever speaker you want if any. More info on our website under the "order" section. murphycabs . com

    Thanks again for looking!

  • Great build! Be sure to post sound clips of the double micing too.

  • Will do!

  • don't you need ventilation, tho?

  • A small port. Very small. I dont think it is needed though.

  • this is a very good make, and you added space , instead of what others are doing and seriously close micing, but not giving enough air for the waves to come out. have you tried double micing it yet? would sound amazing!

  • Good idea! Double mic. I will try that.

  • awesome! when i mic up i use the sm57 and an akg c414, but whatever your going for really :D

  • Hi there good work. What type of microphone are you using this cab?

  • Shure SM-57. Thanks!

  • Thanks for the reply, I've been wanting to make one of these boxes for years.

  • hi, great work, i have and handmade

    guitar isobox too...

what kind of isolation material you have in the back of the cab??? you have the isolation material in all the back of the cab??? sorry for my little english

    bye

  • Sweet but thats K-mart mattress foam

  • Any chance you could give us a sample from the outside of the cab just to get an idea of how well it dampens the sound? It's cool. I was thinking of building one but my idea is a bit more convoluted.

  • I'm confused, what is the purpose of an Isolation Cab? Like, is it any different from a regular Cab?

  • It is essentially an enclosed box with a speaker and mic inside. It is used for tube amps in the recording studio(Basement). You can run your tube amps loud without waking the kids. Make sense? You can use mine live, just open the door.

  • ifs for recording...."isolating the sound"

  • where did u buy the 1/4" input panel?

  • Ebay or Musicians Friend. The are everywhere on the internet.

  • What padding are you using?

  • Just standard egg crate foam. foam by mail . com is a good resource. Thanks!

  • How many watts is it?

  • Comment removed

  • Sweet dude, I made one similar to that. Next time you buy a vintage 30, search the net and don't get it from MF. You can probably find a brand new one for about 90 bucks. 130 is a bit high.

  • Yeah, you are right. Oh well ya live and you learn. Thanks for checking it out. I would love to hear your iso box. Thanks!

  • You have done a great job.

not to mention the money saved for anything close to equivilent in quality.

  • Thanks! I am all about saving money in our current economic situation...take care.

  • your pretty good with that stuff.

i wonder if you know how to fix guitars .

  • What are the dimensions on it?

  • Awesome! I'm going to possibly build one of my own. I live an a apartment and have some amps that I can't even use. How much noise actually comes out of the cab?

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • No very much. I have it in a closet and you can't even tell it it there under the studio monitors. It has really been great!

  • What are the dimensions on it?

  • Would a big old freezer work?

  • It could. All you would have to do is treat the walls so they weren't so reflective. Give it a shot!

  • Thanks, I will as soon as I get my hands on a 2x12. It's big but not quite big enough for a 4x12. Take care good demo.

  • Do you think I'd be okay using a 15" speaker?

  • Oh yeah. Just make the box bigger to suit the larger speaker...

  • Hey Looks good man! Thanks for the comment and e-mail!

  • Nice...that pedalboard of yours in the background brings back memories of rockin' countless gigs. FretBuster.

  • Awesome man, can't wait to hear it!

  • Ok...I can't spell..... Casket making! Or coffins....which ever you prefer.

  • Thats pretty cool. You should go into caket making.
