Don't sanctions undermine negotiations? Nuclear program reporting issues should still be in jurisdiction of IAEA, not Security Council halting enrichment (a result of US coercion). A nuke would undermine Iran gov's goal of regional power since Arab neighbors would freak out, align more with US, justify perm. bases, etc., so if they are pursuing it, aren't they responding to perceived existential threat from US/Israel and historical failure of UN to protect them? Grand Bargain, not sanctions.
With the current administration, sanctions are the best option we're going to get, and the reality is that sanctions will be in place when we go into negotiations, the purpose of which will be the lifting them, and finding a realistic solution.
