@mikr0bas 4wd usually means that there is a 4lo feature. There is power going to all 4wheels all the time unless like in newer cars they are monitored by computers where when one looses traction other wheel compensates. All wheel drive usually doesn't have 4wheel low and most of the time its 80/20 80% rear 20% front unless wheel slip occurs. Basically the same haha. but 4wheel is a lot better for serious off roading.

I have a 93 Subaru Impreza L 1.8 front wheel drive. it has 272,9XX miles on it. It stopped working would just crank. I took it to my mechanic he told me it was the timing belt. He didnt know that if it was broken the valves would have bent or not. The timing belt got replaced and bam it ran like nothing even had happened. When i first got it it was crashed from the side. I fixed it and have had it since 2007 so I love SUBARUS!!!
Also, most of the even cheapest Subaru's (circa 1990's) come from the factory with AWD, power windows, door locks, cruise, and even wiper delay.. with no added sticker price.. What other vehicle makers do that? Plus, the whole car comes apart for repairs with either an 8, 10, 12 or 14 mm socket. They don't make them like they used to, but if you can find one from the '90's with a crap body, get it. Even if you buy it for $600 and it only lasts you a year, can you rent a car for a year for $600?
To me, what makes a Subaru a Subaru is the fact that in my area (Vermont) you can buy any old rusty random Subi off the side of the road for $300.00 and drive it reliably for at least 4 years (as I did 5 years ago). I picked up a '93 Legacy L sedan (2.2 auto) with 179k miles on it for $300. Put a set of brake pads on the front when I bought it and NOTHING else. Never even changed the oil. Sold it with 254k miles. Reason I sold it was the body was so far gone and somebody wanted the engine.

i took the oldies GX through a flooded road, water 10cm from the start of the windows, and she kept going, not a drop of water inside the cabin, motor still going some 100K later. subaru are tough, especially the 90s models.

@vagrantr I once pulled the front driveshafts out of my old Leone wagon and stuck it in 4wd, made it quite fun but i wouldn't call it "switching" to RWD. If you put the lever in FWD it wouldn't drive.

@yappinc My Subaru made a terrible sound when I revved from 1800-2400 when I got it. I replaced the alternator for 80 dollars (easy fix, with a few tools you can do it yourself) and now it is really quiet. It's amazing how something small like that produces so much sound.

@jkldeer Not ALL Subarus are AWD. I have owned 2 1st generation Legacys that were FWD. I know my Subarus too, and I am pretty sure that my Subarus were FWD because there was no driveline or rear diff... durrr, shows what you know

at the begining you can hear the motor knocking, even mine (96 legacy outback) has the worst motor knock in the world when i bought it but still runs solid with 10,000 miles later and still going and i still abuse it and red line it, its the be $800 spent, strongest car for the money ever built period. And the blizzard that just past last week no problem, a guy in an x5 wanted to race is he serious guys, the only thing passing me was another subaru, long live my mountain goat

@yappinc My Subaru made a terrible sound when I revved from 1800-2400 when I got it. I replaced the alternator for 80 dollars (easy fix, with a few tools you can do it yourself) and now it is really quiet. It's amazing how something small like that produces so much sound.

22's? That means those tires are over 2 inches SMALLER than the stock Subaru OBS tires. That is why i believe you are mistaken. It's a Jeep, and Jeep's are made to go offroad. Subaru's aren't entirely offroad vehicles, which is why they're only about 6-8 inches off the ground and run 24-26 inch tires.

Actually, a 17 inch rim gives you a 24 inch tire depending on sidewall size. even a prius has a 20 inch tire. Be careful before you call someone an idiot...
