  • Très beau, très incarné (quelques grimaces dûes sans doute à l'émission...?...) et oui : he is fucking sexy!...

  • Great sound, but I can't ignore the bizarre things she does with her mouth and jaw. Rather distracting.

  • Wow, Kasarova sounds so different on every recording of this role. If her diction was a little clearer I'd be her biggest fan. :)

  • HA! i saw this in zurich with my sister.

    it was just awesome!!!

  • @figifigo lucky you!!! :) I only have the DVD and a lot of feelings of jaelousness to you right now ;)

  • she(he?) is really very good here. and he is fucking sexy!

  • @svejelka it's a she ;) sings great, doesn't she?

  • I definitely perfer the Salzburg performance. It is much mellower vocally ... I do appreciate the faster tempo, though.

  • Whose the dude? hes bangin'

  • @moghedien13 If you haven't found this out yet, he's Jonas Kaufmann, and if you will pardon the expression, you ain't seen nothing yet. Far more importantly, if you haven't HEARD him, search YouTube right away, and search local library holdings for CDs and DVDs! (I recommend Tosca, Carmen, and Lohengrin on YT; the latter 2 are available on DVD). "Sehnsucht" (self-titled release in the US) is my favorite of his albums. :)

  • Gotta tell ya', I don't like this production all that much (too static for me), but Kasarova, Kaufmann, Hartelius, and Nikiteanu really make the most of what they were given indeed. :o)

I'm afraid Eva Mei doesn't make it as Vitellia for me... not dramatic enough. Like Welser-Moest's orchestral read a lot, tho.. when he isn't too loud!

  • Totally agree. IMHO, Eva Mei is just miscast as Vitellia. It's obvious the singing is a bit difficult for her. And I can't understand how in the world Sesto could betray Tito because of this frozen conceited wretch! I'd rather believe Sesto was enamoured of Tito than of her.

  • I'm with you there! :o) The 'Deh se piace mi vuoi' scene is unintentionally funny for it. Kasarova looks convincingly turned on, but I keep asking... 'Really? You are turned on by 'that'?'! ;oP There is more chemistry between Sesto and Tito.

Would love to see Eva Mei as Amenaide, tho. She's a fine one on CD. :o)

  • Not always, I think. The "Parto, parto" scene left me puzzled because I really felt some discrepancy between Kasarova's singing and acting. 'What do you REALLY mean to say, pal?' - thought I. And I believe it was intentional. Kasarova's far too good actress for it to be otherwise.

The same thing was with this "Deh, per questo istante solo". It's funny, indeed; I asked some people who knew neither the plot nor Italian, what this scene was about. You won't believe what they told me!

  • I'll have to dig this dvd up for that scene now! ;o) I remember thinking that Jon Miller got away with the lack of action in that scene only because he had the luxury of Kasarova onstage. Seems Sesto arrives having 'done the deed' rather than being on his way to ambushing Tito.

  • That's at odd with the music indeed. I think Kusej has it right in Salzburg that Sesto doesn't stab anyone until that pause before he launches into 'Deh, conservate, oh Dei!'

And this scene... I thought it's a lovers' quarrel. Then my German friend told me VK said in an interview they were exploring Tito-Sesto gay relationship in that staging. Dunno if it's really in the score, but interesting, ay? :o)

  • Yeah, it looks like it. It's rather cute, actually. But then, what about Sesto and Vitellia in the finale? I would've been happier to see Tito & Sesto safely reunited. Get the chick outta here! :D

  • Ha! Right on, matie. But then you must feel sorry for Tito, though. This Sesto really beats him around all opera long, and he is supposed to be the emperor! ;oP This way, we get to feel sorry for Sesto instead.

  • Just re-watched it with a friend of mine. She almost fell asleep in the Act II but some of her comments really amused me. She said she'd never trust this Sesto in 100 miles just by looking at his face. And in the Act II she said it looked almost like Publio wanted to secretly strangle the guy, and only the prospect of Tito's fury kept him from doing that. %) As for me, I found I began liking this piece more and more, though I use the "Rewind" button pretty often, esp. when Vitellia is on stage.

  • Ha! This Sesto is certainly a lot more.. wicked.. than the one in Salzburg, ay? ;o)

You know, it's almost unreal how VK seems to always know exactly where the camera are! She is one of the few singers who really know how to play to both the in-house and the DVD audience at the same time.

  • unfortunately, in this dvd, it makes E Mei look shifty-eyed by comparison. Like she should pick a spot or two in the auditorium and focus there instead of trying to look everywhere at once. That comes out worse for DVD due to close up, but in live setting it probably isn't all that distracting. :o)

  • Am I dreaming or are Sesto and Tito more than friendly here? I think I like it.

No. I think I love it! I didn't think one can get away with doing 2 totally different interpretations of a Mozart aria before, but she is so damn convincing that she does!

  • You're not alone in this dream then. ;-)

Me too couldn't imagine there could be two so different interpretations of the SAME aria by the SAME singer. But it turned out Frau Kasarova is an actress one of a kind. This woman is just amazing.

  • I especially like her last "Disperato vado a morte". It looks almost as if Sesto's accusing Tito instead of repenting. Poor Tito just stands here abashed and totally screwed up because of this emotional attack.

  • Totally agree! And that added trill just after it. Her Sesto isn't repentant at all but is taunting his ex-lover.

It takes some getting used to, since I had never heard this 'twist' for this scene before.

You're right. She's a wondrous actress. So different from clip to clip. I'm joining the Kasarova-bandwagon... if there's one. ;)
