In my opinion all the cockpits should be moved with the lateral protection something like 20 cm forward, probably in that way you could prevent this kind of crash. I mean, it's very rare an accident like this, but exactly beacause it happened all the FIA organization should take some action. Before the death of Senna they were already taliking about a rule change in 1995 for F1 with the flat bottom and wider cockpits, but just like in this case, they moved when it was too late.

Stuff like this is why Formula One and other major open wheel racing will always have a lot of danger that cannot be taken away. Current regulations have the tire being tethered to the car but still it is too late after this accident. This really hurts since as it has been said so many other places for the tire to land other than Surtees head. Probably 99 out of 100 times the tire lands somewhere else. I guess it was Surtees's time RIP :(

tragic accident. contrary to some brainless people here, there is no way this was clarke's fault, like it wasn't barichello's fault that the spring off his car nearly killed massa. bizarre though, this type of accident is so rare, then two happening in such close succession, both young henry's and massa's. unfortunately motor racing will never be truly safe, but then again enough people die each year just getting out of bed, at least he died doing what he loved, not that that's much consolation.

the chance of this kind of accident are very very low, perhaps one in million or even billion. unfortunately its happened, twice (next is massa at hungary) RIP. FIA should do better to protect drivers head, as it is the most exposed body part in single seater cars.
people are expecting it to be open, and it have to be made in such a way that the driver could get out in less than 7 seconds.
The solution was to use one wheel tethers per wheels. However, these F2 have a "slight" design flaw over that and it did piss off many mechanics... What they will do, starting next years, is two wheel tethers per wheels and have more control over the design. It is not perfect, but they are working on it.

Senna was killed by his front wheel boucing off the retaining wall,entering the cockpit,driving his head against the seat rest and crushing the base of his skull from ear to ear .If that wasn't enough,also,the front wheel suspension arm pierced the front of his helmet in 2 places penetrating his brains frontal lobe. These drivers hv enough to worry about .They don't need to be killed by debris ! Some type none vision impairing cock pit roll cage could hv saved both drivers.
@dbrinkm1 The only thing that could have saved senna was a simple tyre wall, less damage to the car and less chance of this happening. Also, if your frontal lobes (or its part of the brain at the very front, don't know what it scalled) is damaged, that doesnt kill you, only impairs the ability to learn and can change your personality. Look at the case of a miner that had a 6-foot metal pole blown through his head, thanks to explosives, and survived
they should teather the wheels to the car on nylon strands, like on f1 cars, to stop this haapening. Like at monza, i think it was 2002, marshell taken out by a wheel.
the wheels on f2 cars are actualy teathered onto the cars like f1 cars stoatsta, however like f1 cars they are only teathered to the suspension so if that comes off so to does the wheel.

The helmets in F2 aren't the same as F1 are they? The F2 helmets look like they have a more traditional round look as to the F1 helmets which are quite flat at the back.

the chance of this kind of accident are very very low, perhaps one in million or even billion. unfortunately its happened, twice (next is massa at hungary) RIP. FIA should do better to protect drivers head, as it is the most exposed body part in single seater cars.

@machvelocy Here is the problem:
people are expecting it to be open, and it have to be made in such a way that the driver could get out in less than 7 seconds.
The solution was to use one wheel tethers per wheels. However, these F2 have a "slight" design flaw over that and it did piss off many mechanics... What they will do, starting next years, is two wheel tethers per wheels and have more control over the design. It is not perfect, but they are working on it.

Senna was killed by his front wheel boucing off the retaining wall,entering the cockpit,driving his head against the seat rest and crushing the base of his skull from ear to ear .If that wasn't enough,also,the front wheel suspension arm pierced the front of his helmet in 2 places penetrating his brains frontal lobe. These drivers hv enough to worry about .They don't need to be killed by debris ! Some type none vision impairing cock pit roll cage could hv saved both drivers.

@dbrinkm1 The only thing that could have saved senna was a simple tyre wall, less damage to the car and less chance of this happening. Also, if your frontal lobes (or its part of the brain at the very front, don't know what it scalled) is damaged, that doesnt kill you, only impairs the ability to learn and can change your personality. Look at the case of a miner that had a 6-foot metal pole blown through his head, thanks to explosives, and survived

they should teather the wheels to the car on nylon strands, like on f1 cars, to stop this haapening. Like at monza, i think it was 2002, marshell taken out by a wheel.

the wheels on f2 cars are actualy teathered onto the cars like f1 cars stoatsta, however like f1 cars they are only teathered to the suspension so if that comes off so to does the wheel.

@Stoatsta yeah it is but they cant really tie them to anything else, so unfortunately thats how it has to be. Because if they tied them to the cars chassis then they would tear that apart in a crash and leave the drivers body exposed.

this is the worst crash i have ever seen in racing, not bcoz of the wheel and wall but bcoz
a) i was there and i always go brands hatch 8(
b) bcoz he had spun earlier in the race which put him at the back of the pack 8( he was in the top 10 but it rained and he span,
the only wqay this could have been worse was if he had died at the corner named after his dad (john surtees), and the wheel of the first driver to crash was also his fellow driver from england

The helmets in F2 aren't the same as F1 are they? The F2 helmets look like they have a more traditional round look as to the F1 helmets which are quite flat at the back.

id love to say i cant believe it happened but im not shocked. they havent been smart enough to notice that no matter what they do, when an open wheel car hits a wall, the fact theres no fenders or doors to keep the wheels from being exposed, theyre gonna rip off and bounce, teathers or not at those speeds and with that much force there isnt any way to ensure a tire wont fly off the car. they should look at a canopy like what don garlits had on his 80s swamp rat dragster.
