When someone who has both read the books and played Dragon Age thinks about it, he'd probably decide that the Gray Wardens are inspired by the Night's Watch(books 1-4 were written before Dragon Age:Origins was released).They hold no lands except those given to them to use, marry no wives and father no children.They serve for life and protect the Realm from a demonic invader, who threatens to destroy it and they are few and dwindling in number in the begining.

1 - they do not work in nights. They work all the time. The rangers stay months at a time patrolling the north of the wall. And they do it mostly by day.
2 - in the snow, even if you worked by night, still white is the best camouflage.
@rogerpenna well since they fight with swords and in woods where bows and other long range weapons are not as useful as in an open field , I'd say them being camouflaged is not making much of a difference. Besides they usually fight in the night , with little light to be reflected on the snow so black turns up to be a proper choice since it doesn't conceals itself better in the shadows
well, actually, they fight mostly during the day. The only thing they fight in the night is the White Walkers (who only appear at night). But you know... last time Night Walkers appeared was 8000 years ago.
btw, polar bears also dont use bows, and still, their camouflage comes in handy.

So their tactic , instead of chasing and flanking his enemies (therefore scattering their already small units) is to have their enemis come and face them. For that kind of fight camouflage is pointless
ok, I am still at page 400 of book 2, so I cant say if they always fight at night in the other books, but so far, there is absolutely no indication that they only fight at night. Quite the contrary. They try to camp, rest, build defenses at night...

And if you consider the Others, well, they're supernatural beings and we have no details of how their senses work but my guess is that camouflage isn't going to work against them

I know it's extremely selfish but I felt personally betrayed by GRMM when Mormont was stabbed there, but that's just the kind of reaction the writer is capable of producing, because he makes us love and hate all of his characters, as is our wont.
Samwell Tarly though...the unlikeliest of heroes, finally stands up straight and begins to deserve and understand what it is to be a Man of the Night's Watch.
Bastard boy do not learn from his faults, wants to play war and gets killed... :D
