Well my friend has one and this is his technique:

When you go to pick him/her up, do not use force to do it, do it if you are lifting up a feather so they don't dig into your skin and stab you. That and try to lift it from it's stomach and not it's back.

No it's not, hedgehog wheels should always have a solid bottom as they are not as nimble as other small pets and can injure themselves by getting their foot caught.

It is an 11 inch metal Quality Cage wheel. It's sleek, quiet, and easy to clean. I'd recommend it to any hedgehog owner. You can order them online for about $30. A hog's wheel should never be under 11 inches in diameter or you risk sever spinal problems in your hedgie!

Oops, sorry. I noticed after I posted that this video was made before I purchased my QC wheel. That is simply a solid-bottomed 11 inch plastic superpet wheel. It was so rickety and noisy! That's why we replaced it. : P
