Pretty much a fantastic preview release. I am completely new to using Kwin. When I look at shortcut keys to enable effects, it says use a "meta" key. WTF is a meta key?
4.1 is very good already, and this 4.2 release is going the right way. What I'm more concerned about though is the porting to QT4 of other KDE apps and general appearance and usability of apps not made for KDE4 (mainly gnome and KDE 3 apps of course), when I tried KDE 4.1 on OpenSUSE 11.0 a while ago I ended up having a lot of highly unstable apps (KOffice2 being the worst) or incosistent visual interfaces for other softwares. Damn I'm always getting back to Gnome, I'd like to "don't look back"!
Thanks for the update GIMPMan. I'm wondering how stable is it though ? Cause I'm thinking of going bleeding edge to get the very latest 4.almost2 goodness.

Metakey is the "Windows" key.

is that the standard desktop or have you modded that?
(eg: the dock at the bottom)
stupidpanda16 3 years ago
it's modded slightly, all I've done is made the panel look like a dock by making it smaller and higher.

whats ur pc specs?
ubuntu704feistyfawn 3 years ago
C2D 2.66Ghz, 4Gb ram, 7800GTX.
The fact I've got a high spec machine don't suggest you need a high spec to run 4.2
GIMPMan1972 3 years ago
hehe, i've got the same E6750, 4Gb ram, 8600GT
alexmal85 3 years ago
Bah, your rig isn't high spec. That's medium spec.
I kid. I'm just kinda blown away by how high the specs can get - I've got a contract to build a dual GTX280 machine sometime after Christmas.

KDE 4.1 was amazing... but kde 4.2 will definitively rock!

Is panel hideable yet? I noticed you can have it float over windows, but then the portion overlapped by the panel is unusable.
belutlah 3 years ago
Yes, Windows can cover and auto hide are in the panel settings now.

Plamsa is not that stable to be honest but it's not even a alpha so thats what you get. I'd recommend waiting for a alpha release atleast.
GIMPMan1972 3 years ago
Ah ok then, yes well I guess I should at least wait for an alpha :P

This is simply the most exciting desktop environment in existence today. Anyone still bagging it out is suffering from some kind of retardation.

wow very nice.

Really nice video, very well done!
4.2 looks promising, but the stretching while resizing a Folder View is awful!
italianesport 3 years ago
Thanks,
Yes the stretching is not nice but it's working, I should imagine they will get around to doing something proper later about it.
GIMPMan1972 3 years ago
dont worry, kde 4.2 beta1 which will come today, has got folderview which can display icons in regular view (just like in kde 3.5)
