The burned out section was there the trip before this one, so it's been like that for at least a few years. What likely happened is someone put gasoline on it, because timber this big does not burn in such a pattern so easily. They probably thought it would burn the bridge down, and it didn't work since the trestle is made from stone pirs and iron deck, the wood is only the very top most section which served to absorb some of the forces from the train running over it.
so how much of the R8 line is out of survice and what is still in service..thts the diesel section of the line..it has to be..back in the 80's septa ran RDC's on this part..now thts a guess there...i hope i am right..lol
Oh no, no not at all, it is totally sound aside from the upper timber section which could easily be replaced. The danger comes from the fact that the top is 6 feet wide and 35-40 feet up in the air over the water with no railings, and broken & rotted out planking on the one side which used to be a solid walkway from one end to the other. The bracing timbers (seen on either side of the rails) are also in pretty bad shape. Basically it's not safe for YOU, not for the bridge.
It's funny I stumbled upon this video yesterday somehow. Just about 2 weeks ago I was considering trying to walk across this bridge with a friend of mine. Seeing it on Bing and Google Maps just got too tempting. Great video though.
Please for safety's sake don't. I only did the crossing & video to raise awareness, it really is quite unsafe & should be seen as an industrial installation & is still owned by SEPTA.
Sorry, there is no new station in newtown (yet) and i live fairly far from fox chase. Newtown is in the middle of lower bucks county, fox chase is in montgomery county. Ask your elected & appointed officials to re-activate to newtown!
You are crossing from the George school side correct? We used to walk on the outside ledge of the steel structure. It was really something when a train would cross at the same time.
Yes, george school side. The large main girders have a flange big enough to step on, but i never thought anyone would use that part. I guess if you dont wanna get seen by the train crew that'd be the way to do it. Crazyness! :)
I remember back in 84 a guy tried to ride his horse across the tressle and the horse snapped it's leg after stepping between the ties. They had to put it to sleep right on the bridge.
Sorry for the heavy breathing by the way i'm not too cool with heights, but not even that, there was NOTHING to stop me from falling all the way down if i tripped.
It's Neshaminy Creek. We used to hang out by this bridge as teenagers in the early 80's. It was in a lot beter shape back then when the train was still running. Fun times.
Wow thanks for the video! This is Neshaminy Creek, right?

Hi, great video!
Could you film the construction of the new R8 train station ?
I lived many years in Fox Chase and would like to see how the new station is getting.
Thanks... Paula
