Get them w/o their beaks cut and their wings clipped if you let them roam. Very often the cutting and clipping will prevent them from cleaning themselves and foraging properly. Ours have have an acre to eat grass and clean out pests...including ticks and grubs.

I did have a wild dog problem a while back, he ended up killing 5 of them before the humane society picked him up. I have also had 1 taken off by a hawk. I am thankfully redneck republican free. And I leave out Zombie food so they don't get hungry and eat my chickens, ha ha!

You mean different breeds- all chickens are the same species.

Some important tips are: always put grit in their food: you can order "chick grit" online or buy it at a feed store. We didn't know this with our first chicks and one became impacted and almost died. Chickens don't have teeth and need grit to digest food.

Also, it helps to put apple cider vinegar in their water. It keeps the bacteria under control and they like the taste.

@aroneous its not REALLY a bad thing to do, its ewy if its already into a fetus but if you get it early enough it wont be a chick but just a normal egg with few sperm cells inside .

Bueitiful Chickens! I have 7 cause 1 of mine got ate up by a coon and someone we beilive stole 2 as they were chicks in the store before we arrived to pick them up. I usually get around 5 eggs a day with them though an i love mine like crazy i plan on getting more! ttyl

Oh...that takes me back...I rented 5 acres east of Seattle in Duvall Washington YEARS ago, and the property came with three chickens. They looked just like these three, and they all had distinctive personalities! They too laid an egg every day...lemme see...it was Gertrude, Stella, and I can't remember the third one's name. My mom just got 2 for her birthday from a friend of hers. And we live in the middle of Minneapolis, MN. I thought she was kidding when she called me on my way back from class and was all "When you get home, watch out for the 2 chickens in the back yard." we eat them and we provide family and friends with eggs because they prefer our eggs to the ones in the supermarket. they have a bright yellow yoke unlike some at the supermarket :-)

lovely, give them a nesting box in a nice place like their pen, where they can all go to lay eggs and feel safe. Mine go one after the other, like using a toilet ! Put some hay in it, and make it look like a nest, and they will do the rest. Put a couple of eggs from the supermarket in it first if they don't 'get it', and they will !

an update on Ginger and Livvy

Livvy is looking great now and is very confident. if we have the conservatory doors open we find the chickens in the kitchen or the dining room... they are so cheeky!

its funny tho having them walking around and sitting on your lap and stuff

i recommend chickens to anyone! they are such interesting pets!

I heard of factory farmed chickens escaping from a rolled truck once...and even when they could sustain themselves in wild...they still ended up dying after 1 week or so. So, what I'm asking you is: how are yours holding up? I would hope they live for at least 6 years or so. =S

Babs died on the 12th March. we had to put her down due to her suffering from heart failure :-(

we now have a new chicken called Livvy who we saved from a battery farm (where they are in cages in the dark and dont move) and we are logging her improvement :-)

Your chickens need some food intended for chickens like layena and hen scratch in addition to what you are giving them. Go to a feed store.
