he only lived to fight the french. his commanding officers collectively took leadership during the vietnam war. the paracel and spratly islands was stolen by the chinese during the civil war. its hard to protect them when you're already fighting.
from what i read a long time ago, he asked the US for help but they ignored him. mainly because french was occupying vietnam at the time. when french was kicked out, US stepped in but it was a little too late and war was unavoidable.

The truth is the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia in 1978 in self-defense, and overthrew the murderous Khmer Rouge. That is a fact. If Vietnam had not kicked their asses out of power, Pol Pot and his gang would have killed millions more Cambodians. Remember that !
