I knew Joe Ferko all my life, his drug store was around the corner from where I lived. He was the sweetest man I ever knew and I love the String Band, they are still the best and I miss Joe!!!
WASHINGTON (AFP) – New opinion polls Tuesday made painful reading for President Barack Obama's Democrats, cementing conventional wisdom that they face a pounding by Republicans in November's congressional elections.
News article this morning. Happy days are here again!
Now to clean out the bums on the Republican side of the aisle too!
grandpa was a mummer. (banjo) this song was heard quite often. i never associated this with FDR except in passing. it brings back many happy memories of childhood. added to faves!
The Democrats weren't the only ones using the song. It was on Volkswagen commercials during the 70's and also the theme song for the mid-70s sports nostalgia TV show The Way It Was with Curt Gowdy.
Happy Days Are Here Again was copyrighted in 1929 by Milton Ager (music) and Jack Yellen (lyrics). It was first recorded by Leo Reisman and His Orchestra in November 1929 and was used in the 1930 film Chasing Rainbows. Unfortunately, it was co-opted as a song for FDR's 1932 campaign. FDR won and it became the unofficial theme of the Democratic Party. Were it not for that the song would be barely known today.
Hehehe. You people crack me up. It is possible to listen to a nice song without getting all political. I'll bet that most of you can't listen to the William Tell overture without thinking of the Lone Ranger.
I am neither young nor stupid! I find that people who are so immersed in their own ideas of world politics that they are not open to other opinions are usually bigots, racists and as Americans so colourfully put it "red-necks". I am a 57 year old N. Irish catholic {something else to insult me with} so am quite used to your type of insults and amused by your vitriolic comments. Use an Oxford dictionary to find the meaning of the words too long for you to understand.
@maryred11 I'm afraid you're tilting at windmills, i'm sorry to say. Reason, logic and facts have no bearing on personal or religious ideology. I call it the Bozone Layer, a dense layer of gas surrounding Bozo-Americans that prevents original ideas from reaching their brains.

You are obviously too young or stupid to know what happens when a radical gets elected. Jimmy Carter tried many of the same policies that B.O. is trying now, and the results were an utter failure. Ronald Reagan blew Carter out of office in 1980 with a 49 state landslide. Obama is nothing new.

This must be an Obama "Kool-Aid drinker" video, judging by the many naive and idiotic comments here. Let's see how happy you all are in about 4 years. My guess is that a more appropriate song at that time will be Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Like Bush, Obama is merely a talking puppet, and he will serve his masters well, or they will "JFK" him. So expect nothing but bad things over the next 4 years - the differences between Obama and Bush are merely cosmetic changes to fool the people.
Yes even though I'm a Canadian, I'm looking forward to January 20th when Barack Obama is finally sworn into office. After 8 years, it can't come fast enough. HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!
actually was first used by democ'ts in 1928 with al smith and was played at dem conventions as late as humphrey in '68. by '72, dems had switched to grateful dead, more than likely.

Well, let's put it this way. If you are counting on Obama to cure our economic woes, you will be gravely disappointed ... whether he wins or not. McCain at least has a chance of knowing when he should go hands-off on the economy. Ron Paul would be ideal!
Play loud for the DEMs when Barak brings it home in November and sets America back on its historic role as shining beacon to humanity. Its been a very tough 8 years!
This is the Ferko String BAnd from Philadelphia...one of the top performers in the annual Mummers Parade held each New Years Day! A great song and band!
As jmmdk5 said, Ferko is one of the powerhouse Mummers clubs.
The Mummers Parade is a day-long parade, and is the Philadelphia version of Mardi Gras. Many performers wear outlandish costumes which feature ostrich feathers and sequins.
Ferko has won the String Band category in the Mummers Parade 20 times since 1927.
They won in 1927, 1929, 1930-32, 1936-39, 1947, 1950-51, 1958, 1969, 1974, 1982, 1994, and 1996-98.
Also, the Mummers Parade is broken into three categories:
Comics (spoofing various current events)
Fancies (very fancy costumes)
String Bands (which also wear very fancy costumes)
There is a fourth division, but the Fancy Brigades (elaborate staged performances) no longer march up Broad St. Instead, they perform at the Convention Center.
For those outside of the Philly area, if you get cable channel WGN, they televise the Mummers Parade.
This is actually the official song of the National Democratic Party. Its been the official song since the happy days of the great Franklin Delano Roosevelt!
This song were one of my favourites when in my dad's record-collection, with Deep In The Heart Of Texas on the other side. Thanks for hearing it again!
I remember...in the fifties there was a radio programm in Holland..and it always started with this song and by this stringband...great music..great memories...
Nice song, and very old. It's from late 20s-early 30s. Theres a german adaption with different lyrics, too from the sestet Comedian Harmonists from 1930
This is my all time favorite version of this song!
