  • her voice is so close to Ariel and i love that!

  • i saw her and i like her more than Sierra

  • shes amazing!!!

  • I don't think she did a bad job. Her breathing is choppy, but everyone is born with different pipes. I have a deviated septum, so I can't hold a note for as long as a few others, but her control of her notes is still okay. This song is very breathy. The breathing room is limited the more climactic it gets. It seems like she's trying to find a way to catch a breath before belting a note and that's okay. I only had an issue with her "up abooooove." But, she was decent. Not the best, but decent.

  • @beltingbaritone thanks for the science lesson

  • I am currently working with her and have come to know her as a unbelievable performer but even better, a wonderful person! Remember that this is our Job we may be performing for people who have no Idea how difficult it is to perform night after night, we may not get payed as much as other career fields, and we may face extreme negativity as you have displayed here, but in the end it's what we were blessed to do! So we will continue to perform and enjoy it regardless of what anyone has to say!

  • THE SHOW WAS IN DANGER?! The Little Mermaid has got to be one of the coolest things to hit broadway! What's wrong with people?! I'd see it 50 times if I had the money and could teleport my ass to New York every weekend.

But.. yeah, Sierra was a perfect Ariel. They've yet to find a perfect Ursula.

  • I was lucky enough to meet Chelsea in real life and she was amazing!!!! =]

  • before you critisize, do one thing

    sing it

  • @markymarc45 agreed! Chelsea has kicked ass since she was itty bitty

  • I saw Sierra when the show opened, she was pretty good. But I've got to say, even someone who is a great performer doesn't do justice to this song ever. It's like "Over The Rainbow", it never sounds anywhere near right unless the original voice is singing it. Jodi Benson is the only one I can listen to sing this song.

  • Chelsea is actually very good. She's well trained, and quite remarkable. She's also an amazing dancer. If you want to criticize her then check your facts.

  • She sounds perfectly fine. It's a difficult song to sing. Don't be so critical.

  • I thought she was phenomenal. Certainly better than Betsy Morgan. I'm a musical theatre major in college and i thought the only times she was off pitch or a little breathy were fine because she could get away with a strong acting moment.

  • All I know is that I cannot sing like that. And let me just say, she's got a way of emoting through song. I thought it was great.

  • she should have copied sierra :S but i like the way she tried to be different.. it just didn't work amazingly. but hey, she is still incredible.

  • @Silver54ful i completly agree with you .First people dont have to hate ,because you have an opinion .Chelseas tone of voice is so nasal ,I wouldnt call her the best voice ,LIke Ariel should have .I even think that the mersisters have a way better voice than her .Many people say we dont like every ariel ,just because sierra is the original.i mean sierra is the best ariel for me ,but i like betsy as ariel ,There are many better actresses ,who could have played the part after sierra left

  • wow i expected this to be awful with all of the comments but it wasnt..she sounds fine. good.

  • isn't ariel supposed to be, like, sixteen when she's singing this? i feel like BOTH chelsea and sierra had the adorable, clear voices for this song, and i did see both. this wasn't chelsea's best performace, but her tessitura is higher than sierra's; i would guess that this was less comfortable for her than for sierra.

  • @Mienaina It's stated in the book, movie, & musical that Ariel is supposed to have a beautiful voice beyond her years. Not a voice an average sixteeen year old would have. And you're mistaken in saying Chelsea has a higher tessitura. She mentioned in several interviews that she's a mezzo. Sierra handeled all of these notes with ease. In fact if you listen to what she has done in Phantom & Love Never Dies, this score is fairly easy for her. Even her belts are more powerful then Chelsea's.

  • She isn't so bad in this song, very pretty in some points...She definitely needed a lot of coaching and practice, but she could've been pretty good (In this number)

  • She's lovely.

  • When did Sierra leave? And when did Chelsea start?

  • You're all crazy. This sounds great.

  • Judging by the other comments I'll probably get like twenty thumbsdown for this, but I like this better than Sierra. Her belt isn't perfect but I actually hate how the musical made this song so belty anyway. It suits Ariel better than that...glass voice of Sierra's.

  • @RaneDuPre While I respect your opinion, I still disagree. Ariel isn't supposed to have a childish voice like Chealsea has. She's supposed to have a mature & beautiful voice. I understand why some people don't like the new arrangement. Jodi Benson sang it in a much softer & lyrical tone. But that's not the fault of the stage actors that they changed it to a belting style. I personally love the belting for the stage. You might enjoy listening to Betsy Morgan. Her rendition is closer to the film

  • @RaneDuPre I completely agree with you! I mean, I think both Sierra and Chelsea are wonderful singers, but Part of Your World just seemed so right when Jodi sung it with that sensitive quality...

  • I think Chelsea Morgan Stock did fine with this song...I know I couldn't belt out this song like she did. Perhaps...if Sierra wasn't the original Ariel everyone might have a different outlook on Chelsea as Ariel. Just sayin', cuz I feel bad for her when she's being compared to Sierra. don't get me wrong I LOVE Sierra as Ariel.

  • she's pretty good,

    but sierra is better

  • @Qannicklover I agree, you can't call her a bad singer, but compared to Sierra, everybody sounds like crap :D

  • @ethalinia .Just chelsea doesnt sound like ariel should .No thats not true .Of course sierra is one of a kind ,but i dont mind hearing betsy morgen she would be a better understudy .Chelsea would be perfect in legally blonde .Because she is a little nasal.Same with drew i mean broadway was just to hard for him .His voice is to soft .

  • Sierra was soo much better! Chelsea ruins this song...

  • I just started laughing cuz my little 8 year old sis was watching this with me and said "Everyone in the theater probably left. I would've left. She sucks bad."

  • Sierra was much better. Sierra has a very cute voice and looks and sounds exactly how Ariel would. Chelsea was sharp and flat alot of the time. She sounded really fake on the spoken parts and a had a little or a lot too much emotion that it sounded fake.

  • What an incredible voice! And for idiots who claim Stock was the reason the show closed, tourists don't know the difference between Boggess and Stock. They don't care who they see.

  • @derogatony First of all insulting people who arn't fans of hers doesn't help you. Secondly nobody said she was the reason the show closed. I already explained why it did in an ealrier post. Plus I strongly disagree with you about her voice being "incedible". I think it's anything but. Just as other people & myself have mentioned, her voice isn't upto par for this role. Her range is very weak & small. She's nasally, strained, and very rehersed in her performance. This song is too much for her.

  • I WANT SIERRA BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE WAS MY IDOL AND INSPIRED ME TO ACT

  • I think she is good personally, but her voice is just not right for Ariel.

  • I feel bad for her. She was in a "Legally Blonde" situation like with Bailey Hanks and Laura Bell Bundy. The original acrtress was too difficult to live up to and she did not get a long run when she took over.

  • it was good, i dont see what you guys dont like, she's no sierra, but she is very good

  • good voice but just wasnt mermaid, magical like sierras. not bad, just not fit for little mermaid.

  • @pbkkbecker i love how sierra can go from mezzo to lyric in nothing flat .-. she sang mezzo in this show, and now is singing christine in love never dies. (she's one of the only highlights of the show, methinks, her and ramin.) sierra is epic <33333 the cast album of this musical is the reason i learned how to belt. <3

  • I would just like to say that Chelsea was up against Sierra to be the original Ariel.

  • She is young, will further enhance! It's not bad at all!

  • The poor kid was unfortunatley in Baily Hanks (Legally Blonde) situation. The original actress was too hard to live up too that her replacement didn't get a logn run.

  • i dont want to be rude but even we can sing better than her to nasal för me disney movies but not musical theater .Sierra is so much better .She sounds so much more healthier and of course better .

  • I saw her instead of Sierra, and she does a fantastic job! The only thing that bothered me a bit is that she def could work on her air support..but she is very talented! I agree, she's not as good as sierra, but I've never heard anyone sing like Sierra before, she's unique :) But I couldn't do it as well as Chelsea, that's for sure :D

  • Ariel is not supposed to sound like an average sixeen year old. It stated several times through-out the movie, book, and musical that Ariel is supposed to have this enchanting gorgeous voice well beyond her years. That's really the base of the story is Ariel's voice! Prince Eric is becomes infatuated with the voice for a reason. And Ursual specifically asks Ariel to trade her voice for legs because her beautiful voice is so valuable. This is why I like every other actress as Ariel but Chelsea.

  • @Silver54ful i agree she is 16 but she supposed to have an incredible voice for her age .like sierra has

  • I like it too! She actually sounds 16. Don't get me wrong Sierra was amazing but she was not 16 years old.

  • @angelicdemon805 yes but ariel is supposed to have the best voice and you cant have the best voice when you are 16 .Sierras acts like an 16 year old .but i cant say that about her voice its ok for a disney movie but not broadway she is to nasal .Sierra really has a voice of an angel

  • I like it! She has a different style than sierra, but wouldnt it be boring if they all interpreted it in the same way?

    good job^^

  • @KarpfenKarpfen but i still like sierra more

  • @bastiantotalhappy

Me too! I also like Sierra more, but I just think Chelsea also has some good sides - otherwise she wouldnt have made it to Broadway!

  • With all due respect, that's a hypocritical statement. If we all went by that philosophy nobody would be able to form an opinion on performer. Even those who have positive things to say because according to you unless you're in that profession, you're not worthy to say anything. I disagree. In general you should be able to state how a performance makes you feel. Espeically if you offer constructive critisisim. You just like anyother person have a right to your opinion. So do we!

  • Ok, unless any of you who are railing on her have made it to broadway and starred as the title role of a Disney show, or any other show for that matter, lay off. You are in no position to judge. And you're supposed to modulate vowels when you belt. It's correct technique. And I saw her perform, and I liked her better than Sierra. So until you are broadway stars, please stick to the beloved adage, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

  • I so definitely get you... it's frustrating and depressive.

  • thank you!!! and i agree

  • @pbkkbecker With all due respect, Broadway music is not supposed to be easy to perform. That's why these scores & the expectations are so demanding. It's meant to be of a higher standard therefore requires a finer quality singer. If you can not live up to this expectation, you shouldn't be in this arena. Sierra & her fellow understudies performed these songs with grace and beauty. They had the vocal ability to handle it. There's no excuse for Chelsea to have this role & perform it so poorly.

  • my choral teacher taught us vowels and such, if i can belt burn i think a broadway actress should be able to....... im not saying im better, deffinatly not saying it im just saying i think she needed more voice lessons and practice. idk

  • @iheartwicked91

In Chelsea's defense, "burn" is really hard to belt without modifying the vowel. The reason Sierra didn't is because she's a freak with a crazy clear belt.

I actually don't mind Chelsea, but I haven't seen as many videos of her. You can definitely tell that her air support isn't as great. I like her though, and I really didn't have any problems with her belting. It may not be Sierra, but that's because Sierra is one of a kind.

  • I saw Chelsea during the end of Little Mermaid's run and thought she was great. She really did improve from this understudy performance.

  • Even thaugh I am outstandingly happy for Sierra and her upcoming Love Never Dies, SHE WAS ARIEL, Chlesea sounds like someone with a pole stuck through her throat and hasnt drank anthing in acouple da, then a dieing cat decided to join in on her "belting" if thats even what oyu would call that noise that came out of her mouth. she is AWFUL cant even keep up with the orchestra without having a breathing hypervation, there is no one else who coud have ruined this show more then she did. TERRRIBLE

  • Sorry but I have to be honest. Chelsea is out of her league. She is not equipped with the vocal ability to handle this role. Her strain to keep her voice from cracking is painful. There's no fludity, proper diction, ease of grace throughout the scale, or even healthy breathing. This is the exact opposite of what a professional singer who graduated from a Music Convservatory should be able to convey. Her acting is terrible as well. No emotional honesty. Disney please don't hire her for the tour!

  • i guess SHE'S the reason the show closed.......

  • no at all! Ive spoken to a cast member and the show was in danger even before Sierra left the show!

  • really! wow what happend? i was just watching a recording of the show and it was great!

  • Even though Chelsea is my least-favorite actress to have played Ariel. She and Drew Seeley were not the reason for the show closing. The economic crisis and the fact that the producers of the upcoming Broadway show The Addams Family wanted the theatre led to the closing. Disney Theatrical is currently working on a National Tour that should hopefully start in the fall of 2010. Bad news for people who arn't a fan of Chelsea though. The producers loved her and she's the main front-runner. :(

  • @hottieho13 THE SHOW CLOSED?!?! why? it was good!!

  • shes OKAY......until she belts, she just isnt Ariel, and i met her when she was just the aunderstudy and she was such a bitch she was prolly just having a bad day but still.....omg shes not ariel

  • @iheartwicked91 I agree, Sierra will always be the one and only Broadway-Ariel, but Sierra is an exceptional talent, het belt is amazing, and her voice is so unbelievably clear and pure...Chelsea is def not a bad singer, but she has the bad luck to be compared to Sierra...and NO ONE should ever be compared to sierra, because she's just amazingly talented

  • @ethalinia I'm afraid I must disagree. I don't think it's bad luck at all. She doesn't have the basic tools vocally to live upto this classic character. Sierra and her fellow undersudies did. The score "requires" a clear soprano and a healthy belt. This is a Broadway musical where expectations are supposed to be higher then usual. If you don't have the ability to handle a score properly, you shouldn't be there. This is why so many people are critical of Chelsea.

  • @Silver54ful I don't know that much about music, but I think Chelsea has a pretty clear soprano voice...I've heard much better belts, but I think her voice is really pure..

  • @ethalinia I'm going to PM you so we can continue this discussion. I'll be able to give you better insight on my opinion from there. :)

  • you do realize that she was an understudy from the beginning, right?

  • @jkelli I am aware of that. Yet it still leaves me puzzled as to why she was. Her voice isn't upto par for this role. That's my entire arguement. Ariel is supposed to have a beautiful voice. There's simply too many unpleasent flaws in her tone that arn't adequete for the role. She's more approriate for a role like Penny from Hairspray.

  • @Silver54ful i agree you have all my support ,ariel should have a soft soprano voice she is too nasal and she sounds too hard i get a headache hearing her .sierra is still the best ariel ,but i have to say betty morgan is great too .

  • @jkelli sorry but i have to agree with Silver54ful because she doesnt sound like ariel should sound .and she is to nasal for broadway .I dont say she is bad ,but chelsea beeing an understudy doesnt mean she is good ,Look at drew he is ok for pop music ,but when i heared him sing that song ,it was a really bad performance .and sierra played the part to perfect ,but there are many understudys who are ok too like betsy morgan.chelsea should have stayed as a mersister ,that what her voice is for

  • she can not sing she is horrible i wunna cry cuz sierra left
