@edj66 There are 2 schools of thought there. It would require over £1m to strip and overhaul the boiler. As for getting her back on the mainline, current regulations mean that you'd have to install ATP, and other current train safety measures. Again, this would cost tens of thousands.
At the moment, the locomotive is TOTALLY original, and un-modified. It would be a shame to spoil her, while there are others in the class that already have these modifications...
@smiffy1071 I'm with you on this one - over the last few years there's been 3 A4s certified to run on the mainline so it's not like there's a pressing need to restore Mallard, which is historically significant enough to be well protected - and of course is what the NRM's there for. Hehe, another point would be that after the Flying Scotsman debacle I don't imagine the NRM will be rushing to restore anything for a while...
@Rabbitbunvoo oh,yes, pity that it hasn't been Elgar's Pomp & circumstance, cause it'd show how big and proud empire WAS. And Mallard's A4 is not that big, tipical Pacific engine. And Walton's works worth attention are Violin concerto or cello concerto, not that rubbish written for the proles on Promes, aren't they?
It's about damn time plans were laid to get her back into steam. It really is. A faux Dominion of New Zealand just ain't the same!

@Johnfbreen It's Crown Imperial by William Walton. There's a wee clue up there on the right! ;)

With a rare train like the mallard, don't you think it would be nice to hear IT? - Instead you give us some old classical stuff :(
